11.3 Using Data Displays

Two types of data:

Categorical- data that consists of names, labels , or other non- numerical values such as animals or colors

Numerical- data that consists of numbers, such as weights of animals

ES: Explicitly assess information and draw conclusions

Types of Data Displays and their benefits

Line Graph- used to display numerical data over time

Line Plot - used to show how often numerical data occurred

Scatter Plot - Used to see trends in paired numerical data

Types of Data Displays and their benefits

Stem and Leaf - organizes numerical data by its digits

Box and whisker - organizes numerical data into four quarters and shows the distribution of the data

Types of Data Displays and their benefits

Bar graph - Used to compare categorical data

Circle graph - used to represent categorical data as part of a whole

Misleading Data Displays

What makes these graphs misleading? How are they misleading? 1.)

The broken vertical axis exaggerates the differences in the bar lengths

2.) The large increments on the vertical axis minimizes the change in the data

3.) The different bar widths suggest a comparison of area not lengths

Demonstrate Understanding:

1.)
