HOW TO TREAT OTHERS AS SEEN

BY PHILOSOPHERSJOY P SEBASTIAN

BSED 3F-1

PLATO

•We develop great respect for people we consider exemplary and lose respect for those we discover to be clay-footed, and so we may try to respect only those who are truly worthy of our respect.•We may also come to believe that, at some level, all people are worthy of respect. •We may learn that jobs and relationships become unbearable if we receive no respect in them

Calls to respect this or that are increasingly part of public life:

• Environmentalists exhort us to respect nature, foes of abortion and capital punishment insist on respect for human life, members of racial and ethnic minorities and those discriminated against because of their gender, sexual orientation, age, religious beliefs, or economic status demand respect both as social and moral equals and for their cultural differences.

Embraces the principle that it is wrong for us to treat others merely as means. This ‘Mere Means Principle’, as I refer to it, stems from one formulation of the categorical imperative, namely the Formula of Humanity: ‘So act that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, always at the same time as an end, never merely as a means.

Albert Camus

•When you have been consumed by hatred, the suffering of others relieves your heart.

THOMAS SCANLON

Egalitarianism

•Egalitarian doctrines tend to rest on a background idea that all human persons are equal in fundamental worth or moral status

•People should get the same, or be treated the same, or be treated as equals, in some respect•People should be treated as equals, should treat one another as equals, should relate as equals, or enjoy an equality of social status of some sort.
