Negative Slopes

Let’s learn all about Negative Slopes !!

Make sure to have out graph paper, calculator, pencil and notebook/binder for notes

On what intervals is the slope negative? What is the velocity on these intervals?

On what intervals is the slope negative? What is the velocity on these intervals?

Negative slope = -2 mi/minNegative slope

= -0.5 mi/min

Negative slope = -3 mi/min

Find the errors in this story…According to the Graph on the left. How should the story be corrected? Is the Original Story a lie? Story time – correct the errors:

In my search for corn muffins, I ran toward Watson’s house pretty fast for a while, then I took a break for 6 minutes. I realized I needed to go home, so I started at a slow pace (with velocity of 2 blocks/minute) , then got faster, but turned around. From there I quickly ran a block past Billy’s house, then ran home really fast.

Buying on Credit…please take notes on a piece of Graph Paper

Electric Avenue sells audio/video, computer, and entertainment products. The store offers 0% interest for 12 months on purchases made using an Electric Avenue store credit card.

 Emily purchases a television for $580 using an

electric Avenue store credit card. Suppose she pays the minimum monthly payment of $25 each month for the first 12 months. Copy & complete the following chart:

Number of monthly payments

Let’s make a graph of our

data…be sure to place scale

on x and y axis…it will be

TALL!!Number of monthly payments

0 1 2 3 4 5 6

Account Balance (in dollars)

580 555 530 505 480 455 430

1. Will Emily pay off the balance within 12 months? How do you know?

2. If you know Emily’s account balance NOW, how can you calculate the NEXT account balance, after a monthly payment?

3. Which of the following function rules gives Emily’s account balance E after m monthly payments have been made?

E = 25m – 580 E = m – 25E = -25 + 580 E = 580 + 25m

E = 580 - 25m

Buying on Credit…Questions Part One

1. Will Emily pay off the balance within 12 months? How do you know?

Nope – she’ll pay $25x12 = $3002. If you know Emily’s account balance NOW, how can

you calculate the NEXT account balance, after a monthly payment?

next = now - $253. Which of the following function rules gives Emily’s

account balance E after m monthly payments have been made?

E = 25m – 580 E = m – 25E = -25 + 580 E = 580 + 25m

E = 580 - 25m

Buying on Credit…Question Answers Part One

5. Determine the rate of change, including units, in the account balance as the number of monthly payments increases from:0 to 2;2 to 3;3 to 6;

7. How does the rate of change reflect the fact that the account balance decreases as the number of monthly payments increases?

ii. How can the rate of change be seen in the graph from Part a?

iii.In the function rule(s) you selected in Part c?

Buying on Credit…Questions Part Two

5. Determine the rate of change, including units, in the account balance as the number of monthly payments increases from:0 to 2; -50/2 = -$25/month2 to 3; -25/1 = -$25/month3 to 6; -75/3 = -$25/month

7. How does the rate of change reflect the fact that the account balance decreases as the number of monthly payments increases?

it’s NEGATIVE!!!ii. How can the rate of change be seen in the graph

from Part a? slope = -$25/month

iii.In the function rule(s) you selected in Part c?slope = -$25/month
