What are NATURAL RESOURCES?

They are any useful items which come straight from the earth without human

processing.

2

What are some examples of natural resources? Water Air Trees Petroleum/oil Coal Soil Gold Diamonds Livestock (goats, sheep, etc.) Got any other ideas?

3

How may humans USE these natural resources? (Brainstorm ideas together):

Water: Air: Trees: Petroleum/oil: Coal: Soil: Gold: Diamonds: Livestock:

4

There are 2 types of natural resources:

RENEWABLE

NONRENEWABLE

5

RENEWABLE resources can be used again and again because they regenerate. Example: WATER (usually; when might this not be true?).

6

NONRENEWABLE resources cannot be regenerated; when they’re gone, they’re gone! Example: OIL

7

TRUE or FALSE?

Some countries have more natural resources than others.

8

TRUE!Why?

(The “HAVES” vs. the “HAVE NOTS”)

A. Physical Geography.

B. Misuse of natural resources.

9

Who cares???

Countries who HAVE lots of natural resources do!

AND… Countries who do

NOT HAVE natural resources do!

Why do you think these are both true?

10

The United States of America

Are we a “HAVE” or a “HAVE NOT” country? Why?

11

We DEPEND on have and have not countries; they also depend on us. HOW? (Hint: exports & imports)

12

AGREE or DISAGREE?

Countries who HAVE plentiful natural resources are richer than those who do not; they are better able to compete in the world’s economy.

13

People can become DESPERATE when they run out of natural resources.

What do DESPERATE people do?

14

Many countries in Central Africa are DESPERATE due to lack of natural resources.

15

WHY?

A. Physical geography

B. Misuse/overuse of natural resources

C. Political corruption (from within and without)
