Competition between densification of cities and preserving free land to grow food within cities…

Rooftop garden experimentation…

Vegetable growing in bags experimented on the Royal library rooftop: an educational and awareness raising project on a famous building in the centre of Brussels with views to stimulate systematic terrace gardening and more production-oriented developments…

New forms of both intensive/qualitative urban agriculture

Aquaponics experimentation…

Aquaponics is the marriage of aquaculture (fish farming) and hydroponics (growing vegetables without soil). In June 2012, the "Village partner" in partnership with Group One developed a pilot scale aquaponics unit. Its purpose is to act as a catalyst project and test a series of economic parameters.

New forms of both intensive/qualitative urban agriculture

“Indoor farming”

Indoor production involves producing throughout the year in a short-chain production-distribution approach, with production intended for consumption onsite (at catered events) or in the region. The “close the loop” approach is sought for all the technical aspects related to flows of materials and energy. An Indoor Farming Toolbox has been produced with a map of opportunities for the region, potential spatial configurations and related business model in order to motivate a maximum number of businesses to work together on a project of this type in order to illustrate a range of innovative solutions in the region.

New forms of both intensive/qualitative urban agriculture

How can cities handle the conflict between urban densification and maintenance of growing spaces?

Organizing a reclaiming land platform…

Stadsnära odling community gardens platform, Gothenburg…

How can cities stimulate (re)engagement of citizens in growing (i.e. window gardening; private garden; community gardens…)?

Suggested question for dicussion at tables…

Urban Garden Soil Pollution by City of Lyon

The city of Lyon implements prevention and proactive policies about garden soil pollution and define a process including: free soil diagnostic for community gardens and allotments; information to all members of those “contaminated” gardens to avoid health risks: selected food to grow, best practices, etc.; topsoil replacement and cleaning of the removed topsoil in specialized areas; phytoremediation experimentation (soil decontamination process based on plants).

Emerging drawbacks:Soil and air pollution in cities…

Emerging drawbacks:Preserving quality in intensive agricultures…

Emerging drawbacks:Gentrification…

THANK YOU…
