1 Samuel 26 1 And the Ziphites came unto Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doth not David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon? 2 Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph. 3 And Saul pitched in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon, by the way. But David abode in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness.

4 David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul was come in very deed. 5 And David arose, and came to the place where Saul had pitched: and David beheld the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his host: and Saul lay in the trench, and the people pitched round about him. 6 Then answered David and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And Abishai said, I will go down with thee.

1 Samuel 26:7-8 (TLB) So David and Abishai went to Saul’s camp and found him asleep, with his spear in the ground beside his head. "God has put your enemy within your power this time for sure," Abishai whispered to David. "Let me go and put that spear through him. I’ll pin him to the earth with it -- I’ll not need to strike a second time!"

It’s so easy to misinterpret events as they relate to God’s Will, as Abishai did here.

6

Second opportunity to kill Saul

7

Saul hates David and is trying to kill him.

Here he lies in a deep sleep in front of David.

Abishai thinks that surely God wants them to end his life and begin David’s reign.

But David knows better.

8

[9-11] (TLB) "No," David said. "Don’t kill him, for who can remain innocent after attacking the Lord’s chosen king? Surely God will strike him down some day, or he will die in battle or of old age. But God forbid that I should kill the man he has chosen to be king! But I’ll tell you what -- we’ll take his spear and his jug of water and then get out of here!"

Hebrews 10 36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the Will of God, ye might receive the promise.

David would wait on God.

9

1 Samuel 26:12 (TLB) 12 So David took the spear and jug of water, and they got away without anyone seeing them or even waking up, because the Lord had put them sound asleep.

Most people would think Abishai right.

Common senseLogic

10

Romans 1 21-22 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools …

Imaginations = thoughts, reasoning,

Heart = mind and feelings or emotions.People trust too much in human logic and emotion.

They imagine that their thoughts are wiser than God.

11

2 Corinthians 10 4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds;) 5 Casting down imaginations (logismos – reasoning, thoughts), and every high thing that exalteth itself against the Knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

We could talk about science (falsely so called).

We could talk about religions.

We could talk about intellectuals.Anything or anyone who contradicts God and His Word.

12

Romans 8 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

John 14 16-17 And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever; Even the Spirit of Truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

The world can only receive what they perceive with the five senses.

We perceive thru the Holy Spirit.

13

Mark 1 11 And there came a Voice from Heaven, saying, Thou art My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased. 12 And immediately the Spirit driveth Him into the wilderness. 13 And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto Him.

Even Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit.

14

1 Samuel 26 (TLB) 13-14 They (David and Abishai) climbed the mountain slope opposite the camp until they were at a safe distance. Then David shouted down to Abner and Saul, "Wake up, Abner!"

"Who is it?" Abner demanded. David would do nothing against the king, but he would hassle Abner a bit.

This makes me think that Abner is one of those who are pushing Saul to hunt and kill David.

15

(TLB) 15-16 "Well, Abner, you’re a great fellow, aren’t you?" David taunted. "Where in all Israel is there anyone as wonderful? So why haven’t you guarded your master the king when someone came to kill him? This isn’t good at all! I swear by the Lord that you ought to die for your carelessness. Where is the king’s spear and the jug of water that was beside his head? Look and see!"

Why could not Abner protect Saul that night? The Hand of God put him asleep, and he could not wake up.

16

17 And Saul knew David's voice, and said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And David said, It is my voice, my lord, O king. 18 And (David) said, Wherefore doth my lord thus pursue after his servant? for what have I done? or what evil is in mine hand? 19a Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If the LORD have stirred thee up against me, let Him accept an offering:

If it’s God, I will repent.

17

19b but if they be the children of men, cursed be they before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, Go, serve other gods.

In driving David out of Israel, they had driven him from the place of worship.

Thus, “Go serve other gods.”

David was not serving other gods;

It was just a way of saying they had driven him from public worship with the Lord’s people.

18

20 Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth before the face of the LORD: for the king of Israel come out to seek a flea, as when one doth hunt a partridge in the mountains.

(TLB) 20 Must I die on foreign soil, far from the Presence of Jehovah? Why should the king of Israel come out to hunt my life like a partridge on the mountains?"

19

21 Then said Saul, I have sinned: return, my son David: for I will no more do thee harm, because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly.

Saul has said much this same thing before, the other time David spared his life.

There is no repentance in his heart.

Just because people say the right words, does not mean their heart is right toward God.

20

(TLB) 22 "Here is your spear, sir," David replied. "Let one of your young men come over and get it. 23 The Lord gives His Own reward for doing good and for being loyal, and I refused to kill you even when the Lord placed you in my power. 24 Now may the Lord save my life, even as I have saved yours today. May He rescue me from all my troubles."

David had refused to sin, and he knew that God would reward his loyalty in doing good.

Let us choose not to sin in every situation.

21

24 And, behold, as thy life was much set by this day in mine eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of the LORD, and let Him deliver me out of all tribulation.

That needs to be our mindset.

Care not what men may do for us, but rather what God will do.

22

25 Then Saul said to David, Blessed be thou, my son David: thou shalt both do great things, and also shalt still prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.

Saul and David never met again.

Saul had made promises -- again --

But David did not depend on Saul or his promises, but rather on the Lord.

23

Anyone who would desire that his life would change, must first let God change his heart.

In trouble

It’s time to surrender.Let go and let God have your life.

24

1 Sam 26:23 The Lord gives His Own reward for doing good and for being loyal. …

You have tried it your way; now live God’s

Way.Not for a trial period, but for your lifetime.
