Food Styling Is Aesthetics

When food is styled, it is made to look better. Just like your hair is styled or clothing is made to appear more “put together” by a stylist!

• Food stylists prepare foods to look like art.

• Then the graphic design artists take it from a very nice photograph…

…to a finished magazine cover.

See favorite recipes inside!

Think about the following when photographing food:

TIPS: FILL THE SPACE! ZOOM IN! USE THE RULE OF THIRDS. DON'T CENTER

YOUR SUBJECT IN THE MIDDLE.  TAKE THE PHOTO AT A NATURAL ANGLE,

SITTING DOWN, NOT FROM ABOVE! PHOTOGRAPH FOODS THAT ARE NICELY

ARRANGED IN MULTIPLE COLORS.  IF PHOTOGRAPHING DESSERTS, MAKE SURE

IT ISN'T JUST ONE CUPCAKE OR DOUGHNUT. INCLUDE MANY TO SHOW RHYTHM OR MOVEMENT.

What NOT to do:

TOO FAR AWAY MOSTLY GREEN & YELLOW. Not enough color variation.

TOO MUCH OF THE SAME COLOR

You might want to show a recipe during the preparation

This works particularly well. Don’t be afraid to throw in some of the ingredients or utensils onto your tabletop!

However, remember to zoom in! This photo might be too complex.

There may be too much white space in this example, and it’s too centered.

Step two- Plan for materials. Plates, garnish, tableware,

cloths, and the like. Think about your

background. Plan lighting.

Practice with lights to get the highlights & cast shadows that you want.
