Agenda
Backup and Restore Key Considerations
Backup to Disk vs. Tape
Primary Disk Storage• SAN-based vs. LAN-based Backups• The Role of Snapshots• Asynchronous Replication and Disaster Recovery

Disk vs. Tape
Disk No single point of failure architecture No human errors in loading / unloading tapes Does not stretch RAID Always online Asynchronous Replication to a remote site Fast restores and easy to verify backups are correct
Tape Can be a single point of failure Human errors in loading / unloading tapes Tapes stretch and shoeshine Not online, slowing restores Not automatically sent to a remote site

LAN-based Snapshot
Backup Software
Backup Agent
1. LAN-based (no array-based snapshot) Data takes the full round trip, bogging down
application servers, the LAN, and the SAN
2. SAN-based (with array-based snapshot) Data is copied within the disk array or across the
SAN, with no impact to LAN or application servers

Protection Against Site-wide Failure Frequent snapshots are transmitted to target side Snapshots may be mounted on target side Backups may be performed at the target side Good way to protect remote/branch offices Failover / Failback to remote storage system Pause / Resume, checkpoint restart, deduplication

Why not de-duplicate right before the backup disk?
Inline de-duplicating appliances either slow backups or are costly
Application servers and networks become bogged down transmitting information that likely will not make it onto the backup disks
De-duplicating appliances fragment data, which hinders restore rates
To test the validity of a backup, a full rehydration of data from the deduplication appliance to a free storage pool is necessary, hindering restore time objectives
Backups cannot be quickly tested to ensure
they are correct with de-duplicating appliances

E-Series Snapshots (1 of 2)
Snapshot 1
Snapshot 2
Snapshot 3
Snapshot N
Snapshots of iSCSI, Fibre Channel, or SAS connected SAN volumes
Snapshots are instantly taken
Initiated via scheduler, manually, or scripted
Microsoft VSS Hardware Provider to install on Windows servers
Application-consistent snapshots for Windows servers
Initiate snapshots from any VSS Requestor such as popular backup applications
Initiate backups from Nexsan Storage Tools Utility (a VSS Requestor)
All security information is preserved for the volume at the point in time the snapshot was taken
Policy-based retention and deletion of snapshots
Mount snapshots as READONLY for backups or to restore individual files or entire volumes
Mount snapshots as READ/WRITE for data mining and testing

E-Series Snapshots (2 of 2)
Rollback a volume to a prior point in time
Volume is instantly available, even though the rollback is still in process for that point in time
Restore operations are reversible and all existing snapshots are preserved (space permitting)
Delete snapshots in any order
Uses copy-on-write algorithm and requires data protection storage to be pre-allocated
Size of the data protection storage pool can be grown, and can flexibly assigned to volumes
Up to 4096 snapshots per volume or RAID set
Easy to set up and manage via GUI
Nexsan utilities to manage snapshots from Linux, AIX and Solaris

E-Series Asynchronous Replication (1 of 2)
IP NETWORK(LAN OR WAN)
E-Series
E-Series
AsynchronousReplication
Asynchronous Replication of individual iSCSI, Fibre Channel or SAS connected SAN volumes
Separate systems by any distance and communicate over TCP/IP
One-to-One and Many-to-One
Based on snapshots, which are retained on the source and destination sides of the replication
Can replicate older existing snapshots, as well as snapshots taken after replication is set up
Only the changed blocks since the last snapshot need to be transmitted
Checkpoint restarts efficiently resume replication if the transport has a temporary outage
Can mount snapshots on the destination side while replication is active
Full security is preserved for volumes on the destination side

E-Series Asynchronous Replication (2 of 2)
IP NETWORK(LAN OR WAN)
E-Series
E-Series
AsynchronousReplication
Manual failover to the secondary system on the destination side
Useful for data migration to a new system or for storage rebalancing
128 concurrent replications, of which 16 can be active per system
Easy to set up and manage via the GUI
Replication can start when a snapshot is taken or on a schedule
Replication can be paused, resumed, or canceled
