Real Number System

Math 11 – College Algebra

Real Number System

Addition Operation

• If a and b are real numbers

a + b

denotes the sum of a and b

Multiplication Operation

• If a and b are real numbers,

a x b

denotes the product of a and b.

Subtraction and Division ???

• If a and b are real numbers,

a – b = d if and only if a = b + d

d denotes the difference of a and b

5 – 2 = 3 because 5 = 3+2

Subtraction and Division ???

• If a and b are real numbers, and b is not equal to 0, then

a ÷ b = q if and only if a = b x q

q denotes the quotient of a and b.

50 ÷ 5 = 10 because 50 = 5 x 10

Why must b not equal to zero?

a ÷ b = q if and only if a = b x q

5 ÷ 0 = q 5 = 0 x q

Division by zero is not defined.
