Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah Early life
He was born in the village Peyara, 24 Pargana, West Bengal (now in India). His father Mafizuddin Ahmed was a
warden of a shrine . .
EducationMuhammad Shahidullah passed his entrance examination in
1904 from Howrah Zila School. In 1906 he passed the FA exam from residency college ,Calcutta. He received the Bachelor of arts degree with Honors in Sanskrit in 1910 from City College, Kolkata and Master of Arts in 1912 in Comparative Philology from the University of Calcutta. He also received a PhD from
Sorbonne university.
Teaching careerstarted in JessoreSchool where he taught
between 1908 and 1909. He also worked as the headmaster of Sitakunda High School, Chittagong between 1914 and 1915. Shahidullah joined the University of Dhaka as a lecturer of Sanskrit and
Bengali languages in 1921 .
• After completing his doctorate, he returned home and started teaching. When the Sanskrit and Bengali Department was split into two separate departments, he became head of the Bengali Department in 1937 and retired from this position in 1944.
• He became principal of Bogra Govt. Azizul Haque College after retirement. He then rejoined the Bengali Department of the University of Dhaka as a supernumerary teacher and taught there for six years as departmental head and dean of the Faculty of Arts and International Relation Department .He also worked as head of the Bengali and Sanskrit Department of the University of Rajshahi from 1955-58.
Teaching career
Reaserch and great achievementAfter 1915 he returned to research and worked as
Sharatchandra Lahiri Research Fellow (1919–21) under the supervision of Prof. Dinesh Chandra Sen at the University
of calcutta. His years at the University of Dhaka constituted the most important period of his life. During his teaching and research career there, he explored the origins of the Bengali language. In 1925, he was able to show that Bengali originated from Gaudi or Magadhan
Prakrit. To pursue his doctoral studies, Muhammad Shahidullah went to France and Germany in 1926. He learnt Vedic Sanskrit, Buddhist Sanskrit, Comparative
Philology, and Tibetan and ancient Persian language at University of Paris and ancient Khotni, ancient Vedic
Sanskrit and Prakrt at freiburg University in Germany. He received his doctorate from the Sorbonne in Paris in
1928 for his research on the distiches of the Charyapada, the earliest extant specimens of Bengali language.
Reaserch and great achievement
Dr. Shahidullah was the first Indian Muslim to receive the doctorate degree. He also received a diploma for his
fundamental research in phonetics from the University of Paris the same year. A dormitory in University of Dhaka is named
after him .
Important works Muhammad Shahidullah explored deep into the history of old
and middle Age Bengali literature. He wrote many books on these subjects, and his research answered many of the
interesting questions about specific properties of Bengali language and literature.

adab ki tarikh, Bangla Sahityer Itihas , Bangala Bhasar Itibrtta .He also wrote about children. He
translated and edited a number of books. He took active interest in Bengali folk literature.
His Family and dreams
Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah has seven sons and two daughters.
His dream was to build a knowledge –based society free from hunger, poverty, corruption, and injustice.He tried his level best
to materialize his dream through writtings on different sides specially on historic and scientific study of language.
His collaboration to establish Bangla Academy
The importance of establishing Bangla Academy to research on Bengali language,culture,history was first emphasized by the linguist Dr.
Muhammad Shahidullah.In 1955,the Government,the United Front,formed a committee including Shahidullah to expedite the process
.He worked friendly with his other members(Hossain,Shadani,Barkatullah).On December 3,1955,the prime
minister, Abu Hossain inaugurated the Bangla academy.
Death:He breathed his last on the 13th of July in 1969.
A)Sources of power :There are five bases of power
• 1.Legitimate power• 2.Expert power• 3.Referent power• 4.Reward power• 5.Coercive power.• 2.Expert power:means the
ability to research on any particular subject and gaining compliance to dispense valued information.
• 3.Referent power:gaining compliance based on charisma .
• Dr.Muhammad Shahidullah is the combination of expert power and referent power as he is versed in the methods of education,the historic and scientific study of language.And without strong charisma not possible to obtain such great achievement.

B)Trait Theory
• Trait theory deals with the search for the universal traits or features possessed by all leaders.Five traits are in trait theory i.e.
• Intelligence • Scholarship• Dependability• Social participation• Socio-economic status.• Dr.Muhammad Shahidullah a’s life
is constituted on trait theory .He was an educationist, philologist and linguist so it goes without saying that he was an intelligent man.
• . He learnt Vedic Sanskrit, Buddhist Sanskrit, Comparative Philology, and Tibetan and ancient Persian language at University of Paris and ancient Khotni, ancient Vedic Sanskrit and Prakrt at freiburg University in Germany. We can see that he had a good scholarship over different languages.
B)Trait Theory.He passed his professional life through teaching in various
educational institutions. Sometimes he was lecturer ,additional teacher, departmental head, dean of
faculty. And as he carried out his responsibility sincerely, he
was able to ascend to the top position. He gained his PhD from Sorbonne university.He researched on Bengali
language. As he chose the teaching as his profession, he got socio-economic status.
C)Managerial Grid
• There are five managerial grid :• 1)impoverished management• 2)middle of the road
management• 3)team management• 4)country club management• 5)authority –compliance.
• 3)Team management: very high concern for people and high concern for production.
• Dr.Muhammad Shahidullah always thought how to find out the history of Bengali language, research on Bengali language, culture and how to dispense it to the folk. His dream was to build a knowledge-based society free from hunger, poverty, corruption, and injustice. This is really very high concern for people. To materialize his dream he went to different countries to study and know about their language ,culture etc.He researched a lot about language. He wrote many effective language and literary related writings. This is very high concern for production.
D)Behavioral styles theory
• There are 3 leadership style in behavioral theory:
• 1)Democratic style• 2)Authoritarian style and• 3)Laissez-faire style.
• 1)Democratic style: the leader feels the need of help ,decision of others.
• Dr. Shahidullah maintained democratic style as he felt the need of help of others whenever a committee was formed to expedite the process of establishing Bangla Academy.
E)The Ohio Model
• Initiating structure: leader’s efforts to get things organized and done.
• Consideration: the degree of trust, friendship etc.
• Dr.Muhammad Shahidullah devoted his attention to get the all requirements of research on Bengali language organized by his own efforts and his personal concerns were strictly as primary as initiating structure. So his leadership style was
