Revitalizing cocoa communi0es in CDI through increased produc0vity and nutri0on:
Perspectives of the Vision for Change project
Agroforestry for food and nutritional security in Africa Side event, 6th Africa Agriculture Science Week 15 July 2013
Outline
• Importance of Cocoa, the Food for the Gods (Theobroma)
• Vision for change project: Building a sustainable cocoa communi0es in Cote d’Ivoire – Revitaliza0on – Invigorate communi0es
• Diversifica0on, a step toward nutri0onal security – Sustainable produc0on – Improve nutri0on
Importance cocoa
• Côte d’Ivoire is the leading cocoa producers and represents 40% of the world produc0on.
• Cocoa plays a major role in the economy of Côte d’Ivoire – contribu0ng to 10% of its GDP – suppor0ng more than 6
million households.
Historically, • The food of Gods • Privilege for upper classes • Edible fruit, chocolate drink,
thousand of flavour…, Now, major commodi0es for • chocolate, • Other products, • Nutri0onal and Health
aYributes
Cocoa sector rehabilita2on challenges However, cocoa produc0on faces majors challenges
• Deforesta0on • aging orchards, • depleted soils, • insufficient improved plan0ng material,
• emerging pests and diseases
• Climate Change …
Overlap Under-‐nutri0on and cocoa produc0on
• Serious level of stun0ng • High child mortality rate
• Consequences: – Reduced labor output – Reduced cogni0ve

Project Vision for Change (V4C)
• How to increase cocoa produc0vity from 0.4 to 1.5 t/ha by 2020, and ensure: – appropriate quality, – improved environmental management and
– viable communi0es
:
Project Vision for Change (V4C) Objec5ves
V4C envisages a revitalized cocoa sector
in Côte d’Ivoire with empowered farmers producing cocoa on diversified farms with greater produc0vity, improved quality and profitable returns in
thriving rural communi0es
Strategy
• Introduce Improved technologies to revitalize old cocoa plantations
• Invigorate cocoa communities
Areas of interven2on
Project Vision for Change (V4C) Demonstrate a package of rehabilita5on technology
• Increase access to improved plan0ng material – Seed gardens – Clonal gardens – Tissue culture
• Strengten Farmer Capacity – Good Agric Prac0ces – Fer0lizer applica0on – Farmer business school
• Demonstrate improved rehabilita0on technologies – graeing mature tree – Total replanta0on – Replan0ng under old crop
Project Vision for Change (V4C) Innova5on Plateform
• Demonstra2on of improved re-‐habilita2on technologies
• Training CDC

150 000 producers by 2020
• Scale up, target
• Rural entrepreneurship • Nursery, Service
providers (graeing, input, advisory, …)
Innova2on plaKorm
• Graeing ap0tude • Poten0al of clones • Comparison of
