United Kingdom – Part 2Lesson 13

I Kings 9:1-27, 10:1-29; II Chronicles 7:11-9:28

Review

• Kingdom at peace & prosperous

• Temple is built and dedicated

• God descends and ‘inhabits’ the temple

• Solomon’s prayer• You keep your promises

• If we sin, then pray...please hear & forgive

• Solomon builds his own house

God’s relationship w/ His own

• God appears to Solomon – 2nd time• Whatever condition you’re in:• Humble yourselves

• Seek Me

• Turn from evil/sin

• I will hear from heaven and forgive

God’s relationship w/ Solomon and Israel

• God appears to Solomon – 2nd time• If you, Solomon walk before me...• Your throne will be established

• But if you do not and turn away...• Israel will be cut off from this land

• Temple will be destroyed

• Passersby will ask, “ What happened here?”

Solomon Continues Building and Expanding

• 20 yrs to build temple and palace

• Solomon gave Hiram of Tyre 20 cities in exchange for gold• Hiram saw the cities and was displeased

• Fortified cities, broadened kingdom to the north and extended walls of Jerusalem to include Mt Moriah (temple mount)

Solomon Continues Building and Expanding

• Built navies in two seas: Mediterranean and Red Sea/Indian Ocean

• Gold, silver, ivory, apes, peacocks• Gold, Gold, Gold – 25 tons each year• 200 large shields (~7.5 lbs)

• 300 small shields (~3.75 lbs)

Solomon Continues Building and Expanding

• Horse trader

• Chariot dealer

• Silver as common as stones in the street

• Tourists came from all over to see Solomon’s kingdom and hear his wisdom: always bringing gifts

• Just for fun...• 120 talents

• 1 talent = 75 lbs (guestimate)

• 120 x 75lbs = 9,000 lbs• In 2015 gold is worth > $1,100 p/oz ($17,000p/lb)

• In 1971 gold was worth ~$40 p/oz ($640 p/lb)

• So, the value back in Solomon’s day....

• But, today’s value is approximately $17,000 x 9,000 = $153,000,000

Queen of Sheba Visit

“You are far greater in wealth and wisdom than I had heard. How happy your men must be to have you for their king....God is to be praised who has delighted in you and placed you upon the throne. Because of His eternal love for Israel, He has made you king to uphold justice & righteousness.”

Thoughts

• What might the queen’s visit do to Solomon’s ego?

• God will hear us when we turn to Him• Humble yourself

• Seek Him

• Turn from evil/sin

• He promises to hear from heaven and forgive
