the map like the preceding ones, but a step towards the heavenly kingdom of the Christian

faith. Isolated geographically and administratively from the rest of the world, the

proud and virtually impregnable massif of Athos for more than a thousand years hosted the most important hearth of Orthodox Monasticism and

remains the Virgin’s gift to ascetics, which is why all Athonites call it The Virgin’s Garden. However,

long before the Athonites, ancient Greeks had settled in this garden, establishing five large

flourishing cities on the peninsula, which was known simply as Ακτή, i.e. coast.

doors close at sunset.

2. Don’t walk around improperly dressed, no shorts, hats, sports clothes or short sleeves.

3. Don’t make a noise, no singing, laughing or dancing.

4. Don’t swim anywhere.

5. Don’t take pictures of Monks without asking their permission first.

6. Don’t video record anything, or take photographs inside the walls of the Monastery.

7. Don’t smoke in the Monasteries or on the roads of Karyes.

8. Don’t enter areas of the Monasteries uninvited.

9. Don’t carry valuables.

10. Don’t forget that the Monks in Mount Athos expect you to respect their way of life.

Today Mt Athos has a population of 2000 monks, between them they inhabit a variety of

different establishments.

I have just finished my first meal since arriving on Mount Athos, Bean stew with side salad of cheese, tomato and onion. Bread, fresh fruit, water and wine.

The nineteen larger houses in and around Karyes are the

residences of the representatives of the

Monasteries. There are eighty-two cells in and around

Karyes, with Monks from Greece, Russia, Rοmania, Bulgaria and Yugoslavia.

The Taverna didn’t have a menu, It was either bean soup or bean stew, but, they were both the same.

That’s my journey almost finished, just four hours on a bus and I’ll be back at the Pella House Hotel in Pefkohori, a small town on the south east coast of the Kassandra peninsula. The Hotel is run by Κώστας, Θεοδόσις, Βάσω and Μαρία. Βάϊα is a friend who helps out in the summer. Every night, the family, friends and neighbours come round to

entertain the guests with music and dancing.
