The2018reunionisplannedforGroton,CTinconjunctionwiththeNavy’scelebrationoftheAug.3,1958historiccrossingundertheNorthPole.ReuniondatesareWednesday,Aug.1,2018throughFriday,Aug.3,departingSaturday,Aug.4.TheHiltonGardenInn,224GoldStarHighwayinGrotonwillbe“homebase.”Theyhaveproposedgivingusall124roomsand4suitessowecanhavetheentireInnforourevent,includingacomplimentaryHospitalityRoomwithanoutsidepatio.Thismeanswecanflyourbannersandflags.Roomrateswillbe$149andsuites$179.Aug. 1, Wed.LateafternoonNewEnglandClambakeatAdmiralFifePark,Stonington.

TheAuxiliary-LegacyCommitteewasformed,asmanyofyouknow,attheSep.2016reunionwiththeprimarypurposeofpromotingthelegacyoftheUSSNautilusandhercrewthroughtheactiveinvolve-mentofspousesandchildren.Thecommitteerepre-sentsandseekstoutilizethestrengthsandtalentsofthe170currentauxiliarymembersandallothercrewmemberspousesandchildren.Ihavecontactedsomefolksaskingthattheyconsidercommitteemembershipandhavesomeverypositiveresults.Ifyouareinterested,pleasecontactmetodiscuss. Greetingsagainfromthesubmarinecapitaloftheworld!Touristseasonisinfullswingand2017promisestobeanotheryearofrecordattendance.ThestaffandcrewhavebeenbusywithtwomajorprojectsbehindthescenesthatI’dliketoupdateyouonhere.
First,thenewNAUTILUSspecificpreservationstandardhasbeenapproved!Nolongerareweheldtotheex-nuclearvesselrequirementsfortheboatsslatedforrecycling.ThisisamajorwinforNavy(andfranklyallofuswithavestedinterestinkeepingNAUTILUSopentothepublic).Withthisinhandwehavebeenlayingouta‘classmaintenanceplan’forthisboatsobigNavycanseewhatmajorinspectionsarecomingdueandwhatthoseresultsare,allofwhichfeedsintowhatworkisdoneinandoutofdrydock.Further,becausethepaintonthehullisinsuchgreatshapeatthe15yearmark,andthetankshavemadeitover30yearswithnoissuesbeyondseverelyflakingpaint,wehaveanewdockinginterval.NAUTILUSwillnowonlyneedtodockevery30years!Seeingtheshippullawayfromthepierandheaddownriverwillonlyoccurabouttwiceinanyone’slifetime.Thisisadirectresultofthehardworkbythecrew’ssinceherdesignationasaHistoricShipandthegreatshapeshewasmaintainedinduringherentirelifeincommission.
Second,themuseumredesignisinfullswing.Theinternationallyknowndesignfirm,GallagherandAssociates,contractedbyNavytoupdatethemuseumhasturnedinthedraftfloorplansandexhibitplans.Contributionsfromthealumnithatattendedthe‘stakeholdersession’inAprilweregreatlyappreciated.GallagherisontracktocompletetheirworkinSeptember;I’llbriefresultstotheSubmarineForceMuseumAdvisoryCouncilandwritethemintothemuseum’sstrategicplan.Theentireprojectwillbebrokenintophaseswithmajorfundraisingeffortsrequiredforeachphase.AsImentionedinmylastletter,it’sbeenover30yearssincethemuseumopenedandit’stimetolookaheadtothenext30.Finishingthelayoutredesignisthefirstmajorstep,followedbyseveralstepsofphasedexecution.
WordhasbeenpassedfarandwideregardingthenextmajorNAUTILUSanniversary,the60thanniversaryofreachingtheNorthPole.Weareoverayearoutandtherearealotofdetailstoworkon,butmarkyourcalendarsfortheofficialceremonyon3August2018,aspartofthatyear’sreunion.Inadditiontoenjoyingthefraternityofthereunion,wearelookingforwardtohonoringtheeventthatdemonstratedtheUSNavySubmarineForce’scontroloftheworld’soceans–amantlewe’veneverrelinquished.
Finally,IwanttocommendMs.WandaSells’effortsontheLegacyCommittee.NowthatNAUTILUS’futureisonevenmoresolidfooting,herworkiscriticaltobringingthesonsanddaughtersofNAUTILUSonboard.Totheeverlastinghonorofeveryonewhosailedonher,sinceUSSCONSTITUTIONtherehasnotbeen,norwilltherebe,anotherNavalvesselwithasproudaheritageinthefinestcareoftheUSNavy.ItbehoovesustoensurenotonlyfuturegenerationsofAmericansingeneral,butfuturegenerationsofNAUTILUSAlumnispecifically,maintainatightconnectionwiththisship.Pleaselendherahandifyoucan,andoffertheopportunitytoyourfamilytobecomeapartofNAAI.

Thankyouforyourmessageaboutmyfather,AugustFuller[NautilusGMG2’60-’61].MyfatherdiedinAugustof1982.IcantellyoumyDadwasagreatman,hewasintheNavyfor20yearsandfinallyretiredofftheScorpionbeforeitwaslost.Hetaughtuskidstorespectthiscountry,hewasinsubshisentireservicecareer,tellingusofhisstorieswhenhewouldcomehomeforleave.
IhaveattachedapictureofmyDadinhisuniform,below.Ialsorememberhimhavingawrite-upinoneoftheNavypapersaboutapictureofmewhenIwas3yearsold.HehadanartistonthestreetcornerofItalytakethatphotoandpaintmypictureoncanvas.IfIremembercorrectlymyDadpaidtheartistwith3cartonsofcigarettes.Istillhavethatpicturetothisday.MyMomwasgoingtothrowitawaybutIwouldnothearofit,eventhoughitisinprettybadshape.ItisapartofmyDadthatliveson.IonlywishIhadthestorytogowithitthatwaspublishedinthenewsletteroftheshiphewasonatthetime,Ithinkitwastitled“ADadMissingHisLittleGirl.”
Wetraveledwithmydadsomeofthe20yearshewasintheNavy.WelivedinKeyWestwhenhewassta-tionedthere,Iwasaround5yearsold.ThenwhenhewasstationedinSanDiegowemovedthere,Iwasin3rdgrade.ThattripIcanrememberlikeitwasyesterday.MyDadcamehomeandfixedabedinthebackseatformysisterandmeandoffwewent.WestoppedatthePetrifiedForest,thePaintedDesert,andtheGrandCanyon.NotmanypeopleevenknowthatthoseplacesareintheUnitedStates.Whatalearningexperiencethatwasfora3rdgrader!AlsowhenwelivedinSanDiego,dadwouldtakeusontheshiptoeatinthegalley.HowexcitingthatwasforalittlegirltogoontheshipwithherDaddy.
MyDadtaughtmetorespectthiscountryandtheflagthatsomanyfoughtfortokeepusfree.MyDadismyhero.Whenheretired,hejoinedtheSubVetsandservedasaguideontheTorsk,whichisdockedintheInnerHarborhereatBaltimore.MyDadwasveryproudtobeasailor,andIamveryproudtosayhewasasailorintheUnitedStatesNavy.Ionlywishhewouldhavebeenherelongenoughtogettoknowmyson.Mysonwasonly7whenhisPapPappassedandIhavetaughthimtohonorandtobeproudofthiscountry,justasmyDadtaughtme.

Ourassociationisoneofmany,thatwilleven-tuallyrunoutoftruealumni,asisthePearlHarborSurvivalgroup.Inthemeantimethough,wewantandhopetofindasmanypeoplewhoservedonorwiththeUSSNautilusthatarenotmembersoftheassociation.
Thathasbeenanongoingprocessformanyyearsbysomeverydedicatedandcaringpeople.Itisaverydifficulttaskformanyreasons.Afewbeing:Asyouwellknow,whensomeoneasksyoutostepforwardtojoinanything,thereisthattrepidationofinitialactiontojumpin,forwhateverreason;Somehavemovedandneverremainedincontactwith
anyoftheirshipmates;Othershavepassedonandnolongerwithus;And,unfortunately,therearesomewhojustdonotwanttoconnectwithanyone,ortheirpast,forwhateverunfortunatecircum-stances.
Weneedtoreachoutandletanyshipmatesweknowwhohavenotattendedareunionthatthereinitialpresencewillmaybebeabituneasy,butafterthatfirst“hello”tosomeonetheyknew,willbringbacksomanyfondmemories.Oh,weallhadatleastonebadexperiencethatmayhavecloudedourzestforbeingonboard,butnevereverwasthatexperienceduplicatedanyplaceelse.Nowhereincivilianoccupations,isyourlifeliterallyinthehandsofyourbunkmatebelowyou.

Youlearnalotaboutpeople,socialissuesandleader-shipwhenyou’relockedina560-footmetaltubewithanuclearreactorand24nuclearmissilesfor77daysstraight.
HowIleadincivilianlifeisbasedonwhatIlearnedfrommyyearsontheTennessee.Whiletheworksituationisvastlydifferent,thepeople,socialandleadershipissuesarethesame.Here’safewthingsIlearnedfrommydaysunderwater:
Run to the Fire.Oneofthefirstthingstheyteachyouonasubmarineistoruntoward
andnotawayfromafire.Thereasonis,ifyoudon’tputoutthefirequickly,everyoneisatrisk.Thistaughtmetoattackproblemsquicklyandnottoignorethem.Thisskilliscriticalinrunningabusinessaswell.
Get qualified. Themoreskillsyouknow,themorevaluableyouaretoasubmarinecrew.Themoresailorsqualifiedforeachwatchstation,thelesswatcheseachpersonneedstostand.Thismeans,it’sineveryone’sbestinteresttotrainandteachnewsailors.Thisalsoensureseveryoneisqualifiedandcompetent.Thisprincipleappliestobusiness-esaswell.Teachyournewemployees,it’sineveryone’sbestinterest.

onewithrespect,nomatterwhatroletheyserveinthecompany.
No escape from a bad col-league.Inbusiness,it’seasytoescapeabadco-workerorcomplaintomanagementtogetthemfiredortransferred.Onboard,youwerestuckwiththecrewthatwasde-ployed.Therewasnoescape.IlearnedtogetalongwithpeopleIhaddifferenceswith.Ilearnedtoresolveconflicts.Ilearnedtolookforwin-winoutcomeswhichhasservedmewellinbusiness.

Sixyearslater,IreneHarveydecidedtopassthosedolphinsontoherniece’shus-band,TedHack,whenhegrad-uatedfromsubmarineschool.TedHack,whoretiredasacaptainin1997,wouldpassthedolphinsonattheThresh-er50thanniversaryceremonyheldinremembranceoftheboatssinking.TheywerethenpassedtoLt.ChrisMiller,themostrecentlyqualifiedsubma-rineratthe2013SubmarineBirthdayBallinWashington,D.C.,withtheconditiontheybepassedontothenewestquali-fiedsubmarineofficereveryyearafter.ThisyeartheywerepassedtoLt.j.g.JeremyBrown. TheThresherDolphins,astheyhavebecomeknown,restwiththenewestsubmarineofficer,carryingonthemissionofprotectingourunderseado-main,themissionthatLt.Cmdr.Harveybegan54yearsago.

Young people are amazing.Considerthis,theaverageageofasubmarineris22.Eventhecaptainisyoung,around40.Onasubmarine,youaregivensignificantresponsibilityatayoungage.Ilearnedaperson’sagedoesn’taffecttheirabilitytoleadandtakeonprojects.
The ability to learn quickly is better than being smart.Thevolumeofinformationwehadtolearnasasubmarineofficerwassignificant.Fromreactorplantmanuals,tohydraulicsystems,tostrategiesandtactics,wehadtoknowitall.Thosethatcouldlearnquicklycouldgetqualifiedfasterandweresuccessful.I’velearnedthisprincipleappliestobusinessaswell.
Bad times provide good perspective.ProbablythebestlessonIlearnedisthatbadtimesdon’tlastandtheyhelpprovideperspective.Iwroteaboutthisinanarticlecalled5ReasonstoCelebratetheToughTimes.Whenyouendurelongperiodsawayfromhome,dayswithoutsleep,monthswithoutfreshfood,orwinterstormsintheNorthAtlantic,youappreci-atethegoodtimesthatmuchbetter.Mytoughestdayinbusi-
nesshasneverbeenashardasmytimeontheTennessee.
IonlyservedintheNavyforfiveyearsbutthelessonsIlearnedhaveneverleftme.Thechallengesofleadinginthatenvironmentwereextremebutitprovidedastrongfoundationfortherestofmycareer.
