Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday, October 10, 2021
A Note from Our Pastor
Dear Parishioners:
The month of October is the month of the Holy Rosary, a time of the year with a particular
focus upon the role of the Blessed Mother in the Church and in our own lives. This month
we celebrated the Feast of the Most Holy Rosary on October 7th. A feast that
commemorates the naval victory of the Holy League at Lepanto in 1571. You may read
more about the Battle of Lepanto here: https://opwest.org/lepanto/
Devotion to the Blessed Mother was strong throughout the Church in every place and in
every age. We Catholics, do not worship Mary, but we do honor her with great devotion and
we pray to her, asking that she pray with and for us poor sinners in need. “To pray” does not
mean “to worship.” “To pray” means to ask formally. Court records in our own country
show that attorneys regularly use the word “pray” when they ask judges for favors such as a
postponement of a trial or a change of venue. We rightly pray to our Blessed Mother, our
mother according to the order of grace, asking that she pray with and for us in our times of
need.
One way of expressing our prayer in a public manner is the time-honored custom of a
Marian procession. Our parishes will have such processions this weekend . We will carry in
procession an image of the Blessed Mother as we pray the rosary and sing Marian hymns,
thereby asking Our Lady to pray with and for us in this particular time of need throughout
our country, our world, and within our families. In so doing, we will be in solidarity with
Catholics around the world, especially those who participate in the candle lit processions at
the great Marian shrines of Lourdes and Fatima.
Please strive to stay after Mass and attend the rosary procession; it will flow directly out of
the Mass and we need to be attentive to safety issues in the parking lots.
With all that is going on in our world and in our Church, it is good to be able to celebrate the
fact that we are not alone in our struggles. The Blessed Mother is our mother, and she never
stops praying for her children. In turn, may we never stop offering her the devotion and
honor that is her due.
God Bless,
Fr. Mahan
