Introduction

In Medieval times, before a Knight received the accolades of Knighthood he would serve first as a page and then as a squire to prepare for the day when he knelt before his lord to receive his "Charge". (The "Charge" being the duties and responsibilities of a Knight). To prepare himself, a Knight would profess the Act of Contrition and pray over his armor within the sanctuary of the church for the entire night before receiving his accolades. We have similar requirements for our own Knights. Knights are asked to profess the Act of Contrition, receive Holy Communion, receive Degrees, and recite our Indulgence Prayers with a contrite heart. Knights participating within the Armor of God Blessing and Investiture Ceremony should be reminded of these principles. In March 2011, Local Commandery No. 382 of the Queen of Heaven RCC, West Seneca, NY developed, instituted and conducted what is referred to as the Armor of God Blessing and Investiture Ceremony. This ceremony was designed by its 2nd Vice Commander, 2ndLt. Vincent C. Binder and Spiritual Advisor, Rev. Thomas J. Quinlivan, Capt., at the request of the then Commander, Capt. James M. Gibbons II. The ceremony is conducted within the confines of a Prayer Service and contains within it several phases. (See Table of Contents). The Armor of God Blessing and Investiture Ceremony is intended to provide newly uniformed Knights with a greater understanding of the importance of the Knights of St. John, International Military Order; whether the uniform worn by the Knight be the 1880 Full Dress or 1998 Marching Uniform. The focus of the ceremony is to express to a Knight the importance of wearing the "Armor of God" as stated in Ephesians 6:10-20 within their daily life. It must be remembered that this ceremony was developed with the assistance of an ordained priest, and that the progression of events follows the prescribed Canon. The solemnity of the ceremony is enhanced with the inclusion of music. The progression of events should be adhered to, if at all possible, to insure the impact of the ceremony upon a Knight. This ceremony is instituted at the Local Commandery level to develop the leadership skills of the Local Commandery Commander and Vice Commanders. When conducting the ceremony these Local Commandery officers will receive the benefit in understanding the importance of leadership in this team building exercise. These junior officers will then develop the skills to conduct ceremonies and rituals when they become senior officers, resulting in the direct contribution of the development of competent officers within the Order. Superior officers above the Local Commandery level are DISCOURAGED in influencing the planning and execution of this ceremony. Non-Uniformed Brother Knights, family, friends, and the Faith community should be invited and encouraged to attend. This ceremony also provides an opportunity to invite clergy that are considering instituting a KSJI Local Commandery within their parish.

OPENING ODE

"For God and Our Country"

(TUNE—Adeste Fideles) I

For God and our country Gather we together, Let us ever resound To sing His praise.

Shoulder to shoulder Face the roughest weather

Our battle cry, “God wills it!” Our battle cry, “God wills it!” Our battle cry, “God wills it!”

We’ll win the day.

II

When God’s bidding calls us Never will we falter,

Even though He requires us Our life to pay.

Like ancient Crusader, We’ll fight for His altar,

Our battle-cry, “God wills it!” Our battle-cry, “God wills it!” Our battle-cry, “God wills it!"

Ephesians 6:10-20

Battle against Evil.

10 Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. 11Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not with

flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. 13Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. 14So stand fast with

your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, 15and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. 16In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all [the]

flaming arrows of the evil one. 17And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Constant Prayer.

18With all prayer and supplication, pray at every opportunity in the Spirit. To that end, be watchful with all perseverance and supplication for all the holy ones 19and also for me, that speech may be

given me to open my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel 20for which I am an ambassador in chains, so that I may have the courage to speak as I must.

Matthew 5:1-12

The Sermon on the Mount. 1 When he saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. 2He began to teach them, saying:

THE BEATITUDES*

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.

5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.

6 Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.

7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

8 Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

10 Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you [falsely] because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Act of Contrition

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you, and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend you, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life.

Amen.

Investing Ceremony

Commander: My Brother Knights you stand before our Lord to receive the "Armor of God". You are asked to take up the whole “Armor of God” which in its entirety will protect you against the assaults of Satan. For it is more than a protective covering it is the life of Jesus Christ Himself.

“Sandals of Peace” Commander: Upon your feet you wear the "Sandals of Peace". For it is written: Eph. 2:14 "For he is our peace, he who made both one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity, through his flesh,"*

“Breastplate of Righteousness”

& “Shield of Faith”

Commander: Knights don your coat; your "Breastplate of Righteousness & Shield of Faith". Your Epaulettes shaped like a cross represent your responsibility to take up the cross in Christ’s name. The 14 Buttons upon your frock coat signify the Passion of Christ and His sacrifice for us as he journeyed to Calvary. For it is written: Matt. 5:6 "Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be satisfied."*

“Belt of Truth”

Commander: Knights “Gird your loins” with your "Belt of Truth". The Sword Belt represents self control; the need for us to control our anger, actions and to avoid sin. For it is written: John 14:6 "Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."*

“Sword of Spirit”

Commander: Knights take up your "Sword of Spirit". Your Sword signifies the Roman Catholic Virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity. For it is written: John 20:21-22 "Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit."* Commander: Knights don your gloves.

“Helm of Salvation” Commander: Knights don your chapeau. Your "Helm of Salvation". The chapeau signifies the need to rule wisely and firmly, but fairly. The Plume reminds you to be merciful in your judgment. For it is written: Proverbs 17:2 "A wise servant will rule over an unworthy son, and will share the inheritance of the children."* Timothy 1:16 "But for that reason I was mercifully treated, so that in me, as the foremost, Christ Jesus might display all his patience as an example for those who would come to believe in him for everlasting life."*

Indulgence Prayers

On November 13, 1923 the Knights of St. John International received from His Holiness, Pope Pius XI these indulgence prayers when a KSJI Military Order Knight dons his uniform and chapeau. These indulgences can only be gained with a contrite heart. An indulgence is a remission of punishment still due for a sin after the guilt has been forgiven. Commander: Knights "Un-cover". Join me in reciting the "Indulgence Prayers". Every time a Knight dons his uniform and recites the prayer: "Cloth me O'Lord a new man who is created in justice and truth" 300 Days Indulgence. Every time a Knight dons his chapeau and recites the prayer: "Place O'Lord upon my head the Helmet of Salvation the I may overcome the assaults of Satan." 300 Days Indulgence.

Commander: Knights "Re-cover".

"O Salutaris Hostia" "O Saving Victim"

"O Salutaris Hostia" is from the last two verses of Verbum Supernum, one of the five Eucharistic Hymns written by St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) at the request of Pope Urban IV (1261-1264) when the Pope first instituted the Feast of Corpus Christi in 1264. The prayer is still used today, often at exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.

O SALUTARIS Hostia

Quae caeli pandis ostium. Bella premunt hostilia; Da robur, fer auxilium.

Uni trinoque Domino Sit sempiterna gloria:

Qui vitam sine termino, Nobis donet in patria.

Amen.

O SAVING Victim opening wide The gate of heaven to all below.

Our foes press on from every side; Thine aid supply, Thy strength bestow.

To Thy great name be endless praise

Immortal Godhead, One in Three; Oh, grant us endless length of days, In our true native land with Thee.

Amen.

English Translation

Down in adoration falling, Lo! the sacred Host we hail,

Lo! o'er ancient forms departing Newer rites of grace prevail;

President’s Charge

Brother Knights, on going out from this place remember the eyes of your fellow-men are upon you, and that the world will only too readily judge our Holy Religion and the principles of our Order by the manner in which we practice them. Let our conduct, then, ever be such as to reflect credit on our Holy Mother, the Church, and the honorable Knighthood we profess.

Now thank we all our God,

with heart and hands and voices, who wondrous things has done,

in whom this world rejoices; who from our mothers' arms has blessed us on our way

O may this bounteous God

CLOSING ODE

(TUNE— Star Spangled Banner)

Our labor and toil For the evening is done;

Oh may it bear fruit With the help of God’s blessing.

Now let us achieve What’s so nobly begun

Our best brain and brawn To the contest addressing, Like the great Constantine, We choose the same sign The Cross of our Saviour

To be our ensign.

The banner of Jesus Forever we wave,

It makes us victorious When in the grave.

When life’s work is done And we sink to our rest

The greater the toil The sweeter the slumber,

A life nobly spent, Is the only test,

Let us merit the crown By good deeds without number.

With the Cross at our head, By His Sacrament fed,

We fear not to join The ranks of the dead.

The banner of Jesus Forever we wave,

It makes us victorious When in the grave.
