AMOAA E-CONNECTION - April 1, 2017

Membership is open to anyone who holds, or has ever held, a commission orwarrant in any component of the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, AirForce, Coast Guard, Public Health Service or the National Oceanic and AtmosphericAdministration and their surviving spouses.

From the President

Thank you Atlanta Dream for reviewing our website andcalling me with this proposal. Atlanta's own WNBA basketballteam and three-time reigning eastern conference championsis partnering with Atlanta MOAA to support our first annualCasino Night fundraiser. They also host the annual Hoops forTroops on July 2, 2017 and assist military personnel as theytransition back into the community. The Atlanta Dream has a 10-year relationship with the cityof Atlanta and is looking to enhance their Veteran outreach

program with AMOAA. I extend my personal thanks to Amber Parnell and VicePresident of Events Cheryl LaFoy for hosting a 75-minute meeting with merecently. The meeting focused on community outreach, assisting Veterans intransition and family activities. Supporting Veterans in transition from uniform tocorporate life within a community is daunting and needs improving. Resume writingand mock interviews are important in a veteran's transition. However, gainingmeaningful employment is priority number one. The stress each veteran faceslooking for jobs and supporting a family is overwhelming; and the Atlanta Dreamwants to assist in this transition. accomplish this is through interactive venues on May 31, 2017 and July 18, 2017.The concept is children will attend camp-themed activities that include facepainting, kids' sport zone and balloon artists. They will watch the game and returnhome by 2:30pm. Tickets are $15 for each child, but parents are asked to providebox lunches for their children. The Dream regular season opens May 13, 2017 and ends September 1, 2017. Allhome games are played in the Georgia Tech basketball arena, McCamish Pavilion.More details will follow, so stay tuned.

Christine Dunn, RIPWe are saddened by the death of a faithful surviving spouse on March 26,2017. Her daughter Sam requests that memorials be sent to DisabledAmerica Veterans or the Atlanta Humane Society.

Secretary Needed

AMOAA needs a new secretary, newsletter editor, andwebmaster - NOW. The Certains are moving to San Antonio inlate April. Bob has been doing all these duties for the last coupleof years, so it may take 3 people to take his place. He's willing toteach a member and/or spouse how to do the work, so the soonersomeone volunteers, the better it will be for AMOAA to continueits 5-Star communications. EACH ONE BRING ONE

Chapter membership recruitment is everybody's responsibility.2nd Vice President Shirley Quarles is spearheading themembership team. Engage COL Quarles (770-289-8724 or e-mail) with potential members and recruitment ideas.

If each active member recruits one new member each year, thechapter will more than double in twelve months.

LEGISLATIVE ALERTCongressman Joe Wilson (R-SC) has introduced a bill (HR 486) titled the MilitarySurviving Spouses Equity Act

SOUTH SATELLITE

Increasing membership is an ongoing effort right now. Letters were mailedto lifetime members of MOAA in our area that do not have a chapteraffiliation. Personally following up with these individuals is expected tosignificantly boost our membership. We also need your help in reaching outwithin your circle of friends and finding a prospective member interested inveterans' issues and sharing camaraderie with likeminded individuals. Our next social will again be at the Village Café on 4 April at 1830. If thefirst Tuesday of the month at 1830 for a social does not fit your schedule,please know there are lots of other ways to support our group.
