The concert itself was abenefit performance to raisefunds for the Bhavan’sBangalore Press School.

Elaborating on his concept, the Ustad said he felt connectedto every religion through Swaraas different religions were likedifferent Swaras linkedtogether in a raga. When theseragas are blended together, theymake a melody.

In the same way, differentreligions have come together toform into an incredible, composite India. This was hisnotion of God, music and thenation he added.

The popular haunt ofconnoisseurs in the city waspacked to capacity to listen tothis great artiste. Nor were they

disappointed, thoroughlyenjoying and creating a rapportfor the rare feast of music. He was ably accompanied byPt. Satyajit Talwalkar (Tabla,)Vid T.A.S. Mani (Mridanga)and Ms Amritha Rao onTanpura.

The concert itself startedwith rag Kedar of the KalyanThaat. After a crisp jod andjhala, he delineated a lilting, rhythmic chez to embolish themelody. This was followed byGanesh Kalyan, a compositionof his own in propitiation oflord Ganesha. A pleasingcomposition in raga CharuKeshia South Indian melodyand ‘Vaishnava Janato’, thefavorite Narari Bhagat Bhajanof Gandhiji completed the list.

What was of specialinterest to the uninitiated wasthe way he rendered each notepertaining to the correspondingraga. This made the musicalfare of the evening moreenjoyable, more rewarding.

Mysore Kendra serialised in anEnglish daily Star of Mysore.

Prof. Krishnaiah was sorethat all the values that Gandhijiheld high and lived for, havebeen diluted beyond recognitionby the very people who keepquoting him day in and day outonly to such an extent thatmany a time one is made towonder if it would have beenbetter if the country had notwon freedom from the Britishyoke at all. It is in this light thatthe series on Gandhiji’s worksare of great significance” headded.

Sri Krishnaiah however, was in a more pleasureableframe of mind when he referredto the 400-page volume“Pages from History” ofProf Narasimha Murthy.Referring to a number ofhistorical anecdotes from itspages, he explained how theymade excellent reading. Hewas sure the book would be a

valuable addition for bothprivate and public libraries.

Dr. Meena Deshpande, theEditor of “Gandhi KrithiSanchaya” paid rich tributes tothe several Gandhian scholarswho had translated the worksand some of whom she said hadsingly translated an entirevolume. She gave a gist of thecontents of the numbers underrelease, incidentally quotingfrom their pages forhighlighting Gandhian ideals.

Prof Narasimha Murthywho spoke about his bookexplained how Sri N.Ramanuja, Chairman, BhavanKarnataka was responsible forstarting the series, about fiveyears ago. As one mightobserve some of the interestingand important occurrencesmight go unnoticed. He wassure that a reader will enrich hisknowledge of history, “whichwas by no means mere warsand memorizing the years”.

The Bhavan’s KodaguVidyalaya, Madikeri on Feb 2.had transformed itself into averitable environmentalist’sdelight, a bevy of tiny tots intheir variegated attire fillingthe roles of flora and fauna tomake it meaningful.

It was a fine way ofcreating ecological awarenessin the kids in LKG and UKG.If the programme under the title“Knowledge Day” highlightedthe fauna aspect. “Farm House”was as eloquent to unfold itsfloral counter part. To enrichthe portrayal, the childrendonned the roles of a widevariety of characters to fill thebill.

On the one hand they couldbe seen as peacocks, butterflies, parrots, koels ducks, crows, hens, pigeons, fish, all in gayabandon to project as idea of

a mini zoo. On the other theycould be seen as inanimateobjects like a hut here, and avariety of plants to seem as aflorid garden. There were kidswho represented the life givingvitamins while there were thosewho as doctors prescribed themto ensure a healthy living. It was a colourful panoramawhere the kids made itabundantly clear that they notonly had talent but also knewthe characteristics of thedifferent species they enacted.

True the role of the parentsand teachers in making theprogramme enjoyable cannever be over emphasized, but the fact remains that thechildren numbering morethan 110 displayed themselvesan creditably to lend substanceto the idea and thus make itwholly rewarding.
