In this compelling story about an Old Order Amish girl, Rhoda Byler has been blessed with an unusually successful "green thumb." While most gardens and crops in the area are lacking, Rhoda's garden flourishes beyond a small-minded town's understanding, causing Rhoda to be treated as different. Rhoda is not accepted and even feared for being different and not conforming to her traditional Amish roots. Rhoda spends her time in her own world, tending to her garden and growing her canning business. Rhoda has decided she does not need anyone's approval or friendship as long as she can tend her garden.Meanwhile, another key character

emerges. Samuel King has taken over his family 's apple orchard. He wants nothing more than to expand and carry on the King name with the legendary orchard. Unfortunately, a devastating mishap occurs, causing the King orchard to plummet. Samuel and his family are on the verge of giving up.One night, while out on her rumschpringe,

Leah King (Samuel's sister), unexpectedly brings the two character's worlds together. Leah serves as the bridge between Rhoda's ability to grow anything with Samuels' growing orchard dilemma. Rhoda must overcome many insecurities in order to help save the King orchard. Samuel must trust in Rhoda's ability to possibly benefit the King orchard.

The two characters are humorous in their contrasting banter as they both struggle to realize that they need this union to become the special individuals God intended them to be. Once again, Cindy Woodsmall has taken

two lives and interwoven them together to show God's perfect timing in all things. Woodsmall describes the struggles of maintaining an apple orchard in vivid detail. Her description of the community's harshness towards Rhoda's abilities, tug at the reader's heart. I was pulled into the story from the first page and enjoyed it throughout. It offers fiction, culture, hope and an underlying love story. One can only wonder and anticipate what will happen

next in Rhoda and Samuel's journey as Woodsmall continues this

saga in upcoming books.

hristmas is just around the corner and I can comfortably say that I have not begun my holiday shopping. I often find myself falling into the category of last minute shoppers desperately trying to

find the perfect gifts for each person on my shopping list. With each story I write about the businesses that make up the

Heartland, I have definitely been keeping my eyes open and have been inspired by country crafts and trinkets. I think it is safe to say that my friends and family will be receiving gifts from the Heartland this Christmas. Some of these shops that have inspired me are featured in this issue of the Amish Heartland.Carriage House is one of those shops where I could see myself not only

buying gifts for the family but also for myself. Their endless selection of artwork and country knick knacks and collectables make it easy to give your home a rustic country feel. I must confess that I find it hard to get into the Christmas spirit before

I have had my Thanksgiving feast, but after entering the Greenhouse Shoppe, I was blown away by the amount of spirit that could be packed into a small greenhouse. In this issue read how The Greenhouse Shoppe becomes transformed into a winter wonderland for the holiday season.Maybe someone in the family is in need of a new bike for Christmas.

Whether a small child or adult or a professional biker or pleasure rider, Raber’s Bike Shop is home to 400 bikes to choose from. Not only do they pride themselves in carrying top of the line bicycles, but also in providing top of the line customer service.One of my favorite parts about the holiday season is all the baking and

smells of homemade cookies and pies. Amish women are masters in the kitchen and spend most of their time whipping up delicious homemade treats to keep their houses stocked all year long. Featured in this issue is a story about one particular Amish family preparing for the holiday season and a small insight into the Christmas traditions celebrated by the Amish people.If you have read through all of these wonderful business stories and are

still stumped about that perfect gift for your loved ones, don’t fret. Just when you thought you were running out of time in the day, shopping hours in the city of Berlin have been extended till nine in the evening. Go for a little “Shopping Under The Stars” on December 7 and let the moonlight guide you from store front to store front. Finally, I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season

Carriage House is celebrating 20 years of providing customers with custom framed artwork and accessories for the home. Shellie Dawson, owner, feels she has made strong connections with her customer base and considers them an “extended family.” Carriage House works hard to continue to provide the best customer service to their loyal shoppers. From the outside, the store looks like another gift shop stuck among

the hustle and bustle of shoppers enjoying the Amish storefronts. But inside, shoppers will find everything they need to decorate their home in a rustic, country fashion. Larry and Doris Dawson started the business in 1992. Carriage

House “started out of their love for interior design,” explained Dawson, daughter of Larry and Doris. Both of Dawson’s parents started out in very different career paths

as her father was a barber and her mother, a school teacher. Dawson

recalls as a child, her parents would decorate everything in the house. So it just made sense to start their own shop and share their love for interior design with others. Dawson bought the business from

her parents roughly 10 years after the store had been in business. In just a few short years the shop had expanded from 1,000 square ft. to 4,000 square ft. Shellie says her favorite part of running the store is custom framing artwork and meeting and talking with customers. Even after 10 years of owning the store, Dawson still reminisces with customers that remember her parents and enjoy sharing their stories of visiting the store in the past.“I frame 90 percent of the photos,”

said Dawson. Most of her business comes from repeat customers bringing in their favorite old pieces and having them re-framed. Dawson says she can have a picture matted and framed for her customer within the same day.“We have the largest selection of

framed artwork in Holmes County,” said Dawson. As you make your way through the

store, you find walls lined from floor to ceiling with artwork from artists like Billy Jacobs, Warren Kimble, Bonnie Mohr and even a small selection of Thomas Kincaid pieces. A rustic, country theme seems to be reflected not only in the artwork but also in the home accessories.

Melvin and David Stutzman frolic like puppies on their way home from school on a November afternoon. A chilly wind and heavy gray clouds cannot contain their high spirits as they kick up brown leaves and jump over fallen tree branches along the road.Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day, and

they know that Mom has been busy in the kitchen all day today. They can already smell the cinnamon and nutmeg, and taste the cookies, pies, and fresh bread that they know will be coming out of the oven.A blast of cold wind meets the warm

spicy air of the kitchen as the two boys burst through the back door,

trailed by ten-year-old Susan and little brother Myron. Mother Sarah Stutzman smiles at their excitement, but quietly reminds them to close the door, wipe their feet, hang up their coats, and put their lunch pails on the kitchen counter, just as they do every day. Even at holiday time, the children do not escape the daily routine of household discipline.Fifteen-year-old Linda, having

finished her education the year before, has been helping her mother all day with the baking, while also keeping an eye on the two pre-school youngsters. There are already eight loaves of bread, four pumpkin pies and three apple pies cooling on the table, and

Sarah is just sliding sheets of cookies out of the big oven.The children’s eyes widen when

they see that the trays are filled with Monster Cookies - their favorite holiday treat. Most Amish mothers keep their cookie jars stocked all year long with a variety of cookies - Snickerdoodles, drop sugar cookies, molasses, peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies - but at Thanksgiving and Christmas, Sarah stretches her budget to buy the extra ingredients for Monster Cookies. These giant treats require chocolate chips, nuts, and M&M candies, as well as peanut butter and lots of rolled oats, so they are saved for special occasions.

Linda and little Susan will make up some party mix, combining cereal, pretzels and peanuts with a garlic-flavored coating. The children also enjoy making puppy chow - another snack mix made with cereal, peanut butter, melted chocolate chips and powdered sugar.After a long day in the kitchen, Sarah

will arise early tomorrow morning to stuff four of her finest broiler chickens with bread stuffing and put them in the oven. She will also serve roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, green beans, applesauce, salad, and fresh bread with butter and strawberry jam or apple butter. Of course, the menu will also include pickles and

pickled apple rings that Sarah put up earlier in the fall. The children will make up plates of food to take to the neighbors, an elderly English couple who have no relatives living close by.The Amish observe

the Thanksgiving Day holiday, but the children are all back in school the next day, while Dan and oldest son Roy miss very little time in Dans leather shop. Unlike their English neighbors, the Stutzmans do not take a four-day holiday, nor do they crowd the malls on Friday, shopping for Christmas.

The next four weeks will be moderately busy for the Stutzman family. When nineteen-year-old Ruth comes home from teaching at the same one-room school that her brothers and sisters attend, she will work with Linda to create Christmas cards to send to family and friends. The family spends an evening together dipping pretzels and peanuts in chocolate, and making buckeyes and Rice Krispie clusters. The chocolates and more batches of cookies will be arranged on attractive plates to be shared with neighbors, relatives and friends. Ruth will take cookies to school and set them out on her desk to provide snacks for her students.While the Amish do not put as much

emphasis on the holidays as others do, they do exchange simple gifts on

Christmas morning, and spend the day visiting family and friends. A sumptuous dinner includes much the same menu as the Thanksgiving Day feast, and food is taken along to the homes they visit, partly to share as gifts, partly to contribute to a buffet dinner. When each couple has eight, twelve, or even fifteen children, a simple family visit quickly becomes a crowd!Melvin and David Stutzman enjoy

their mother’s cooking talents all year round, but during the holidays they look forward to some special treats. And they know tomorrow on Thanksgiving, later on Christmas Day, and throughout the year they will be wrapped in the warmth of their mother’s kitchen and their family’s love.

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

Raber values his customers and offers them a handful of other perks to accommodate their purchase. Customers who purchase their bike from Raber’s Bike enjoy a lifetime of minor adjustments free of charge, receive a free check-up within four months of their purchase and a 10 percent discount on accessories for a year after their purchase.

Raber’s Bike carries brands such as Giant and is an exclusive Pro Dealer for the Giant brand bicycle. They also carry Specialized brand bicycles and are an exclusive S-Works dealer for the Specialized brand. Raber’s Bike also carries Eddy Merckx and Pinarello brand bikes as well as Enve Wheels. These top brands attract many out of state customers. Raber stresses that while high end bikes are a huge draw for their business, bikes are available for pleasure and work related activities.

Raber’s Bike Shop was started in 2006 with its current building being built in 2009.

“I was looking for something this community needed,” said Raber.

Tucked among the winding hills of the Millersburg countryside, the bike shop can be easily overlooked. Raber feels there are some benefits to being located “away from it all.” Rows of shops lining the streets of the hustle and bustle of the city are easy to stroll from one to another but are also more likely to just be “strolled” through. Raber feels that if customers are traveling out of the city to come to a specific shop they are more likely to be paying customers.

Atmosphere also plays a large role in the quality of service Rabers can provide. A small sitting area with magazines sits below a large window that over looks the Amish countryside. While your significant other is picking out his or her perfect bike you can sit and read while enjoying a free cup of coffee.

Following the Christmas holiday, Rabers will be holding their largest one day sale on Saturday, Dec. 29. Starting at midnight, the bike shop will open its doors till 4 a.m. Saturday morning and offer 25 percent off all regularly priced inventory. The shop will then close and reopen from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. that same day offering 20 percent off all regularly priced inventory.

“25 percent off is huge [for a $5,000 or $500 bike],” said Raber. “This is the time to buy.” Even if it is the winter months, it will be worth it to save now for a quality bike customers will enjoy later. All other benefits and discounts are included with special sale pricing.

Raber expects this will be a very busy day for his bike shop and suggests that customers visit the store beforehand to pick out the best bike for them.

alking in a winter wonderland is how one might feel upon entering the double doors to The Greenhouse Shoppe during the Christmas season. A breath taking holiday oasis forms before your eyes as you let the holiday spirit wash over you.

Christmas at The Greenhouse Shoppe opens the first Saturday in November, with the shop transforming into a Christmas wonderland each year. “It’s a lot of work moving from spring to Christmas and Christmas to spring,” said Donna Feliciano, co-owner alongside husband Marty Feliciano. It takes roughly four to six weeks to make the transition from one to the other explained Marty.

But the transition is well worth it to see the expressions on customers faces as they walk into their very own Christmas experience. Trees are decorated from top to bottom with sparkling glass ornaments and oversized, colorful floral pieces and draped in bows and ribbons. Collectible Santas, Angels and figurines on display along with Christmas florals are enough to put anyone in the holiday spirit.

Donna’s love for interior design goes above and beyond as she decorates the

shop for the holidays. As she decorates each tree she says “I feel like I’m painting a picture. I can never re-make the same design, I just start putting the pieces together.”

Her main goal with the Christmas Shoppe is to inspire and give people ideas on how to decorate their own home for the holidays. The best part is, if you like what you see, all the supplies needed to create your very own winter wonderland are right at your fingertips. The glass ornaments, stockings, figurines and flowers all make great Christmas gifts as well. “Come in and get in the spirit of Christmas,” said Donna.

Marty and Donna bought the building that is The Greenhouse Shoppe, in November of 1990. Donna had always wanted a small shop and Marty had grown up in a family of garden enthusiasts. When the building came up for sale the two couldn’t pass up the opportunity to start their own business.

“Marty’s family always had greenhouses and raised plants,” said Donna.

“I grew up in it,” said Marty. Growing up he worked at a couple of different greenhouses that specialized in roses and tropical plants as well as working alongside his family. One could almost say Marty had been gifted with a green thumb. “We all have a green thumb to some extent,” said Marty.

Donna’s background in business helped to get the little shop up and running and her love for interior design ensures the shop will always be well decorated and inspiring.

“We try to carry unique things to decorate [the home] with,” said Donna. For all the do-it-yourselfers out there, “there are easy things to make the home look pretty without a lot of work.”

It’s no surprise that spring is indeed the busiest time of the year for The Greenhouse Shoppe. The shop becomes

a garden lovers paradise with wall to wall flowers and plants and gardening supplies. Gardeners will find a healthy selection of annuals, perennials, herbs, roses and nursery stock to supply their gardens as well as a full line of gardening supplies such as: chemicals and organics, hand tools, soils and mulches and garden decorations including fountains, statutes, birdbaths and ceramic and terra cotta pots.

Marty, Donna and their friendly and knowledgeable staff are always on-hand to assist the newly inspired gardener or landscaper. They will help you to find the right products to make your garden flourish and provide you with the tools to make your next landscaping project a breeze.

sellers,” said Dawson. Customers can get curtains for a whole room or their whole house. Carriage house has greatly expanded their curtain line due to their popularity, explained Dawson.As you walk through the store, you

are not just seeing items haphazardly placed on shelves or stacked in a corner. Dawson tries to setup her items to reflect how you might place them in your own home. End tables are set up with lamps and knick knacks next to benches with matching coverings and throw pillows. A dining room table is set with colorful plates and mugs, a rustic table cloth and matching napkins and complimentary centerpieces. The store is very inspirational to

anyone looking to spruce up their home and is not sure where to start. With the holidays fast approaching, country knick knacks and artwork make wonderful gifts for friends and family. Carriage House interiors is located
