IntroductionTo get the best out of an FM system, it must be accurately fi tted and carefully custom-
ized to fi t the individual needs of the user. Oticon Amigo offers the performance and
fl exibility to achieve this.
The Amigo product family is extremely versatile, making life easier for users in school
settings. Amigo transmitters and receivers can be used with virtually all Behind-the-Ear
hearing instruments, as well as connected to cochlear implants.
This guide will introduce you to the members of the Amigo family. And it will take
you, step by step, through the fi tting, programming and verifi cation of the transmitters
and receivers.
Once you get started, you’ll realize just how easy Amigo is to use – for adults and chil-
dren alike!

The Amigo T20/T21 is pre-programmed from the factory with specifi c channels
available in your country. The menu will provide access to any number of chan-
nels (up to 50) that appear in your transmitter channel list.
To select specific channels:
– Position the cursor on each desired channel and press Sync to add or
remove that channel
– Save the channels selected by pressing the Left Arrow key
– Press C (clear) to exit without saving changes
Changing the user channel set
For Pre-school children we recommend keeping the number of chan-
nels to a minimum. But for school children several channels might be
a good idea (if the children are chan ging classrooms or teachers, and
if more than one child is using a FM-System). Several channels can
help to avoid interference.
If you want to prevent the user from being able to change channels on
the transmitter, you can make just one channel available.

Advanced DSP Enable
The Amigo T20/T21 is equipped with Static Noise Avoidance (SNA). SNA
works across eight audio channels and helps to locate and reduce static noise
that might interfere with speech intelligibility. You can disable the SNA by ac-
cessing the Advanced DSP function in the programming menu.
To disable Advanced DSP:
– Position the cursor on “Disable”
– Press Sync
– Press the Arrow Left key to save your setting
– Press C (clear) to exit without saving changes
Advanced DSP-Static Noise Avoidance
We strongly recommend disabling this feature prior to performing FM
verifi cation in test boxes.
The maximum gain reduction from the SNA will not exceed 4 dB and
will never be applied until the sound level exceeds 65 dB SPL.

The Team Teaching function allows two or more transmitters to be active at the
same time. This function is only available in the T21.
The T21 captures the signal from another transmitter T20, T10 or similar, and
sends it to the user. This method is useful in situations where more than one
teacher is in the classroom.
When using the Amigo transmitter with other manufacturers’ transmitters we
recommend disabling the De-Emphasis in the Amigo T21, in order to maintain
the best possible SNR when mixing the products.
The default setting is Enable, and if you need to disable this function:
– Position the cursor on Disable
– Press Sync
– Press to save your setting
– Press C (clear) to exit without saving changes
Enabling/disabling Team Teaching (T21 only)
In a car situation both parents should consider wearing a transmitter,
so the child can follow what each one is saying. For the best results,
only one parent should speak at a time.

signal by 6 dB per octave from 2-7.5 KHz to prevent loosing SNR.
To change the default settings:
– Use the buttons to navigate and change selection
– Press Sync
– Press to save and exit
– Press C (clear) to exit without saving changes
Pre-Emphasis/De-Emphasis
When using the Amigo transmitter with other manufacturers’ receiv-
ers, we recommend disabling the Pre-Emphasis in the transmitter.

Adjusting the gain
Amigo receivers have a gain adjustment range of 30 dB. The default setting is
+12 dB in “FM only” and +12 dB in “FM+HA”. However, to achieve the correct
setting with a specifi c hearing aid, we recommend performing an FM verifi ca-
tion using a test box.
To achieve the optimal gain:
– Use the buttons to navigate and change the gain value
– Press to save and exit
– Press C (clear) to exit without saving changes

Amigo delivers the signal to the hearing aid at 74 dB, with a +12 FM
gain default. The hearing aid then delivers the signal to the child at
86 dB due to the FM gain.
Note that in “FM only” mode, the hearing aid microphone is attenu-
ated 20 dB.

Always make sure that the R2 and R7 have enough channels to avoid
interference problems. But do avoid long channel lists, as this will
lengthen the time it takes to browse through the Automatic Channel
Seek function.
Also, note that the T20, T21 and WRP will always override any chan-
nel list and force the receiver to the channel currently being synchro-
nized. This new channel will not automatically be added to the list.
However, if you set the receiver to “Last Channel Used”, the device will
remember it until the channel is changed again. We recommend to use
the channel wizard before choosing the channels.

Fitting FM systems in test boxes:
Measurements and fi tting of the FM systems in test boxes are an easy method to
get repeatable and controlled data but they do not always correspond to realistic
situations:
– Synthetic signals used in tests
– Difference between assumed speech sound pressure level and the actual
talker’s level
– Difference in microphone amplification in near-field and far-field, compli-
cated non-linear behavior of the FM system and hearing aid and more
– It is very important to make subjective test on the student user to validate
the performance
– Before fitting an FM system, make sure that the hearing aid is fitted cor-
rectly

• Measure the hearing aid response at 65dB SPL through the coupler microphone (Curve 1).
• The hearing aid is taken out of the box and put aside, still connected to the coupler.
• The receiver is attached to the hearing aid and turned on.
• The transmitter microphone is then placed on the same reference position in the box and the measurement is repeated at 65dB SPL (Curve 2).
• The two measurements are compared to see if the levels are similar. In case that the FM output is different than the aid, the receiver gain should
be adjusted accordingly. The process is repeated until the two curves more or less overlap.
• Finally, the FM system is measured again at 80dB SPL (Curve 3). Because of transmitter compression, you will expect to see an FM advantage
from 0 to 10dB. (Curve 3).

Connectivity with hearing aids
Each hearing aid has a specifi c FM adapter and it is essential to fi nd the right one. If you are having diffi culty with this, please contact your hearing aid company for help. Oticon has produced a compatibility overview that makes it easier for you to fi nd the right shoe.
General connectivity to hearing aids
The Amigo receiver is compatible with virtually any BTE from any manufac-
turer.
When using a FM adaptor for a hearing aid it is critical to investigate if any
modifi cations are necessary on that specifi c hearing aid.
Additionally it is important to note that many modern hearing aids have “DAI
detect”. This means they will detect the FM receiver in the same instant it is
put on the hearing aid. With many of these hearing aids the FM receiver is con-
trolled either by toggling the program button to the dedicated FM program (if
not done automatically) or by switching to the FM program on a visible control
switch. The receiver must in this case be set to FM+HA and it is recommended
for these users to lock the receiver 3-position switch in this position.
When connecting Amigo receivers to hearing aids, it is critical that the Eurocon-
nector is oriented so the LED is positioned either to be visible from the front or
the back. This will also ensure optimal orientation of the built-in antennas.
Please refer to the compatibility database on www.Amigofm.com for
more detailed hearing aid compatibility information.

General connectivity to CI
The Amigo receivers R1/R2 can be connected to most cochlear im-
plant processors through the use of an adaptor. These can either be
ear-level or attached to body worn processors.
Connecting through the Amigo FM-CI bodyworn adaptor
The Amigo receivers R1/R2 can be connected directly to the Amigo
FM-CI adaptor. With the adaptor a number of short cords are avail-
able to suit different processors. The adaptor can also be connected
through a longer cord directly to an ear level processor through a
dedicated ear level adaptor provided by the CI manufacturer.

Connecting through ear level adaptors
Several ear level cochlear implant processors have a dedicated
adaptor to connect the receiver to either directly or via a DAI cable.
As the CI processors, speech coils can cause interference, it may
be necessary to deactivate or disconnect the speech coil in order to
perform wireless synchronisation or programming. The interference
level can vary dependant on what mapping is used in the processor.
The adaptor has its own battery source and can also be used for
powering receivers when programming them. This way it is not
necessary to disconnect the speech coil or removing the ear level
processor during programming.
Please refer to the Amigo CI fi tting guides as well as the user guide
for the individual CI processor for detailed CI fi tting information.
