FORT BLISS MONITOR • OCTOBER 8, 2009 15B 14B OCTOBER 8, 2009 • FORT BLISS MONITOR Thousands of service- members, military retirees, family members and visi- tors from Fort Bliss and throughout the El Paso community came out to see the 2009 Amigo Airsho on and over Biggs Army Airfield Saturday and Sunday. New this year was the Air Force's F-22 Raptor, one of which was on display at ground level and another that made several medium- speed fly-bys. Though the F-22 is the Air Force's pre- miere fighter jet, the F-15 Strike Eagle demo fighter showed up the Raptor with the Strike Eagle's high- speed maneuvers, close passes and bright afterburn- ers. The F-15 also flew alongside the P-51 Mustang during the USAF Heritage Flight, with the Mustang being one of several other older airplanes, including the restored B-17 Flying Fortress “Sentimental Journey” and the F-2 Wildcat. Though the F-16 Tomcat and the F/A-18 Super Hornet did not perform aer- ial demonstrations like they did last year, the F-16 and the A-10 Thunderbolt II were both on the ground for close-up viewing - as were a slew of aircraft, including the C-5 Galaxy, NASA's 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, a German Air Force Tornado jet, the UH-60 Black Hawk and others. Civilian demos also vis- ited the sky, including Tim Weber's GEICO Extra 300S, John Klatt's 300- series aircraft, Greg Poe's ethanol-powered Fagen MX-2 and K. Alan Russell's antique biplane. Dave Dacy also wowed the crowd with a wing-walking demo from his biplane. And although it didn't fly, Paul Stender's jet-pow- ered school bus took off just as fast as any other aircraft at the Airsho, with its engine taken from an F-4 Phantom. The Airsho also featured an M 1A2 SEP Abrams tank, Army and Marine Corps Humvees with a vari- ety of weapons, American and German air defense equipment and a patriotic skydiving jump team.
