In 2005, my wife and I bought our first home. It was a new build and we had the privilege of

watching the home be constructed. As they laid the foundation for our home we couldn’t

help but realize they were laying the foundation for our family for years to come. Being a first

time homeowner, I was unaware of the process that goes along with building a home. It is

composed of a myriad of decisions and elements that are pulled together into a beautiful and

cohesive structure, and it is the collection of memories and experiences that transforms the

space from a house to a home.

Building a school community is similar to a building project. There are so many different parts,

pieces, and contributors that come together for the construction of an exemplary institution.

As we embark upon physical construction projects that signify the growth and success of our

school, we must not lose sight of all of the different pieces that have made us who we are.

The theme of this year’s annual report is Foundation of Faith. We have built our school on the

bedrock of our Catholic faith. We have shored up our foundation with tremendous models

of those who have come before and with the wisdom and guidance of our namesake,

Archbishop Thomas J. Murphy, pushing us ever forward. Our foundation continues

to be strengthened by countless committed members of our AMHS community. It is

strengthened by donors who see our school as a worthy investment of time, talent, and

treasure. It is strengthened by teachers who give their all every day to ensure our students

are receiving the best education. It is strengthened by the larger community of faith which

holds us up in prayer asking that God continue to bless us and keep us close to Him. It

is strengthened by parents who sacrifice to send their young people to us, ready to be

formed in our mission. And finally it is completed by our students who live out our mission

every day.

We have built an incredible school because of the foundation of faith that we hold dear.

Thank you for being a part of that foundation and for having the faith in us that allows us

to grow and prosper.

There are few times in life that you feel

privileged to be in the presence of someone

so faith-filled and passionate for not only education but Catholic education: Debby Walsh is that person. As a young high school student, Debby, like

many teenage girls, struggled with self-confidence. However, one speech teacher saw something in her that she had never seen in herself before: the

gifts of writing and speech. This was a pivotal moment in Debby’s life. She felt a sense of power that she had never known before. When Debby began

discerning her career path, she knew she wanted to empower students just as that speech teacher had done for her.

After more than twenty years of sharing her gifts of writing, speech, faith, and passion to Archbishop Murphy High School, it is clear that these gifts

have laid the foundation for so many students, staff and community members.

Breaking Ground

On May 8th at 12:35 p.m., AMHS broke ground on its new $2.5 million chapel, St. Thomas Chapel.

Under a bright blue sky, Archbishop J. Peter Sartain presided over the ceremony and

blessed the chapel space. WITH SHOVELS IN HAND, The Cymbaluk Family, Hoban Family and the Archbishop

ETCHED this moment into the school’s history.

It was a moment to remember.

“I’ve dreamed about this moment for so long, as I know many of you

have, and it’s almost surreal to me to see the ground actually broken on

this project,” said President Matthew Schambari. “This moment is the

beginning of adding a true spiritual heart to our campus, and I feel so

blessed to witness it.” The chapel is the cornerstone of AMHS’ $6 million

capital campaign, Faith and Future: The Campaign for AMHS. The school

has had tremendous success in meeting other objectives of the campaign,

including increasing the school’s endowment by $1.6 million, and is now

turning its attention to a new chapel.

This new 260-seat chapel will serve as the spiritual and physical center

of the AMHS campus. It will provide the opportunity for sacramental

celebration, Eucharistic adoration, and fellowship for students and a

thriving school community. It will also be the home to celebrations of

alumni and community members. “Our students deserve a place like this,

and it will give them the spiritual foundation they need to go out and truly

live our mission,” said Schambari.

AMHS plans to raise all the funds necessary to build the chapel, incurring

no debt while the project is completed.

And you’d say,“You need to love life like the cactus loves the water. You need to be the spark that brightens up the day.Laugh at yourself and write joy in every sonnetAnd make them feel safe.”

You’d say,“Don’t be afraid to be a goofball if you’re a blessing too.Run like the wind and let the sunshine live in you. Thanks God for all life has to offer and be humble now,Be brave, believe in yourself, and love well.”

And that’s how you’ll stay...That’s how you’ll stay.

Star light, star brightI wish I may, I wish I mightStar light, star bright Honey, you’re the star I see tonight

And you’ll stay with meBecause I’ll see you in the sidewalk chalk and every sunflower memory will play your laughter like my favorite song And I’ll hear you in the rainYour heart beat playin on repeat, singing loud to me,“I will stay.”

I knew there’d be a day when we’d be playing hide and seekAnd I won’t find youI never thought this day would come faithful as the moon

And I’m not gonna start with a pretty little song singin’ “It’s gonna be all right”But even when you’re gone, I’ll still see your life in mine

And you’ll stay with meBecause I’ll see you in the sidewalk chalk and every sunflower memory will play your laughter like my favorite song And I’ll hear you in the rainYour heart beat playin’ on repeat, singing loud to me,“I will stay.”

Shadows everywhere, there’s silence running through our halls as hearts are breaking And I can feel the dark clouds hangin’ over every step I takeAnd I don’t feel inclined to bring peace of mind like this pain will be over soonBecause soon came too late and right now all I want is you

And you’ll stay with meBecause I’ll see you in the sidewalk chalk and every sunflower memory will play your laughter like my favorite song And I’ll hear you in the rainYour heart beat playin’ on repeat, singing loud to me,“I will stay.”

What am I supposed to do without you? What am I supposed to do now? What am I supposed to do without you? What am I supposed to do now?
