Vivid Yellow Diamond Leads Christie’s New York Jewels Sale

Christie’s New York will offer TheVivid Yellow, a rare, highly satu-rated fancy vivid yellow diamondof 32.77 carats, as the star lot ofits October 18 sale of Magnifi-cent Jewels.

The golden yellow hue of thislarge pear-shaped stone is sointense and so deep that theGemological Institute of America(GIA) ranks it amongst the rarestof gemstones in its class. Thestone is expected to achieve inexcess of US$6 million.

Yellow diamonds gain their colorfrom nitrogen replacing carbonatoms in the diamond’s struc-ture. Where there is less nitro-gen present, the resulting stonemay be light or “faint” in color. Inthe case of The Vivid Yellow, thestone’s atoms absorbed an un-usually high level of aggregatednitrogen, giving it a superbly sat-urated golden yellow color.

The uncommon nature of thisparticular diamond’s color inten-sity has been reconfirmed by the

GIA, whose gem laboratory isdevoted to the grading and iden-tifying of important diamonds. Inits grading report for the stone, the GIA classifies The Vivid Yel-low as “Fancy Vivid” – the high-est saturation one can find in acolored diamond. Only aboutone in 10 million diamonds pos-sesses a color pure enough toqualify as fancy vivid.

In addition, the report notes thatthe original rough stone fromwhich The Vivid Yellow was cut

Auction News

must have possessed an ex-traordinary intensity and thus re-quired no modified faceting inthe cutting process to help bringout the color.

The unmounted diamond, which is about the size and shape of a guitar pick, will be the star lot

The collection grew over the 40 yearsthey spent accumulating these colatreasures. Each item had it’s very ownstory and attachment to their lives to-gether.

After Bill’s passing, Jan Schmidt felt itwas time the collection be “revitalizedand re-born” by releasing it to otherswho understood and cherished thesememories as much as she and her hus-band did for so many years.

It is important to mention that moniesrealized from this auction will fund TheSchmidt Family Charitable Foundation.
