AMERICAN MUSIC BEFORE 1865 IN PRINT AND ON RECORDS:

A BIBLIO-DISCOGRAPHYY: SUPPLEMENT TO MUSIC ON RECORDS

BYJAMES R. HEINTZE

The preparation, as a commemorative project in time for publication during the Bicentennial, of American Music before 1865 in Print and on Records: a Biblio-Discography (Institute for Studies in American Music, Monograph no. 6)(Brooklyn: Institute for Studies in American Music, Brooklyn College, 1976) precluded listing those books and phonodiscs on American-music topics published during that year. Because the number of recordings issued in 1976 was significant and outnumbered printed materials published during that year, and because several previously released recordings were not listed in the discography, it was considered appropriate to prepare this supplement as a joint project with the Institute for Studies in American Music.

The first section lists 33-1/3 r.p.m. recordings which were released prior to 31 December 1975 but were not included in the discography. A few pieces which were inadvertently overlooked on recordings previously examined are also included here. The second section includes recordings issued from 1 January 1976 to 31 September 1977.

The format of this supplement and the criteria for including given records is in most respects similar to that of the discography. Entries are listed in alphabetical order by composer. Anonymous works are listed by title. Abbreviations of record-manufacturer names are those used in the discography, with some additions, and most of them are identical to those used in the Schwann Record and Tape Guide (Boston, 1949- ). Two or more recordings of the same work are arranged alphabetically by manufacturer. Record numbers for multiple recordings of a single work issued by one manufacturer are separated by slashes.

All works included were published or written before 1865. John

Mr. Heintze, Music Librarian at The American University, Washington, DC., reviewed the original publication in Notes 33 (1976-1977): 842-843.-Ed.

Special thanks to H. Wiley Hitchcock for his helpful suggestions and Berkley L. Moore for his list of corrections and additions.

Knowles Paine's Fantasie uber "Ein' feste Burg," published posthumously in 1916, is included because it was probably composed before 1861, while Paine was in Germany. I

Music by native-born Americans is included, as is music composed or published in the United States by immigrant composers and music of European origin but of American adoption. Works by Richard Hoffman, who was not an American citizen, are included because he spent most of his adult life in the United States. Works published in English tunebooks but adopted in the United States are listed by title and are cross-referenced from compiler. Pieces composed by James Lyon are listed under his name, with a cross reference to works compiled by him.

These corrections should be noted in the discography: delete Col. MS 7277 and None. H-71200 from items 52 and 306, respectively; in item 20, MIA 96 should read MIA 102; "The Death of General Washington," item 214, was actually composed by Stephen Jenks; items 446 and 448 are incorrectly listed under Jacob French and should be listed under William Billings and Martin Madan, respectively; "Heavenly Vision," item 44, should be entered under item 213; "Farewell Anthem," item 125, was composed by French; and add Col. for Columbia under Record Abbreviations.
