AMERICAN MUSIC BEFORE 1865 IN PRINT AND ON RECORDS:
A BIBLIO-DISC GRAPHY: SECOND
SUPPLEMENT TO MUSIC ON RECORDS BY JAMES R. HEINTZE
This second supplement to American Music before 1865 in Print and on Records: a Biblio-Discography (Institute for Studies in American Music, Monograph no. 6) (Brooklyn: Institute for Studies in American Music, Brooklyn College, 1976) lists 33-1/3 r.p.m. recordings which were issued from 1 October 1977 to 31 March 1980. In addition, I have included a few recordings, released prior to 1 October 1977, which were not listed in the discography or its first supplement. These discs are: American Heritage Publishing Company P2 11687; Angel S-36085; Benedictine Nuns of Regina Laudis Monastery, Bethlehem, Connecticut CO 2564; CMS 650/4L/660/4L/670/4L; Columbia SL-220/CL 864/ML 5386/ML 5659/MS 6068/MS 6259/MS 7086/M 32298; Creative World ST 1060; Desto D 423/DST 6423; London SP 44050/SP 44131/SP 44261; RCA Vic 1622/LM 2662/LSC 2662/ARL1-0580; Tradition TR 2101; Vox MM-3620; Westbound WB 1000.
Entries are arranged alphabetically by composer. Anonymous works are listed by title. Two or more recordings of the same work are arranged alphabetically by manufacturer. Record numbers for multiple recordings of a single work issued by one manufacturer are separated by slashes.
All works were published or written before 1865. Music by native-born Americans is included, as is music composed or published in the United States by immigrant composers and music of European origin but of American adoption.
The following corrections should be noted. In the discography, item 513, "The Bonnie Blue Flag," should be listed anonymously under its title. In the last paragraph of the preface to the first supplement, the sentence, "items 446 and 448 are incorrectly listed under Jacob French . . .," should read, "items 446 and 448 are incorrectly listed under Daniel Read ..." Also, in the first supplement, add Ply. Ch. PC-08-767 to "100 Psalm Tune New" in item 177.
Mr. Heintze, Performing Arts Librarian at The American University, Washington, DC, published the first supplement in Notes 34 (1977-78): 571-580.-Ed.
Special thanks to H. Wiley Hitchcock of the Institute for Studies in American Music for his kind suggestions.
