Teacher’s Statement Northern Valley Regional High School

Demarest, NJ

The American memory courses developed by the Social Studies faculty at Northern Valley Regional High School began when Media Specialist, Janice Cooper, attended Library of Congress Resources training as a part of an education grant, and suggested an approach to expanding the use of technology in the classroom by making use of Library of Congress resources.

Technology Integration Specialist Steve Adler worked with Bill Tinnie set up training and assisted teachers in the use of Adobe Acrobat to as a web research and project tool.

In the Course on Slavery, Students will study the history of slavery by preparing for a slave auction. They will do research on the Library of Congress American Memories site to find information on slave auctions. They will need information on prices, skills of slaves and other pertinent facts in order to prepare posters for a slave auction.

After completing this aspect of the assignment the students will then view photos of slaves, their homes, graves and primary source documents on slave life. This will be followed by listening to 2 or 3 slave narratives or reading excerpts form interviews to find out from the slaves themselves what life was like. Students will then write an editorial critical of the Slave Auctions from the abolitionist point of view, citing the information that they have researched.
