AUGUST OUTREACH August 1, 2020
MESSAGE FROM
PASTOR LOWELL
Dear Members and Friends of
American Lutheran Church,
Back in March and April of this
year, terms such as “blizzard,”
“season,” or “mini-ice age” were
used as initial attempts to help us
understand what this pandemic
means to our country. Was the
pandemic going to be difficult but
short-lasting like a blizzard, or
was it going to be sustained for
months like a season, or are we
entering into a new era, an
extended time lasting years? For
anyone caught in a blizzard, the
disorientation of “white-out”
conditions is overwhelming. While
blizzards can last for a day or two
with repercussions that can last
for several weeks, they end rather
quickly. It is clear now this
pandemic is not a blizzard.
American Lutheran Church of Sun City

Seasons last roughly 3 months and are well known in their order:
winter, spring, summer and fall. While each of us has a favorite
season, no one is enjoying this season of pandemic. At best, we’re
entering into several seasons of pandemic, as we now enter into our
fifth month of online worship without public gathering. I had hoped –
no, let me be honest - I initially assumed we would be back into public
worship in June… ok, July… and here we are entering August, adhering
to the Synod/CDC guideline to refrain from gathering until a sustained
reduction in the number of cases. How long can this continue? Will we
move from several seasons into multi-year pandemic concerns? What
should we do as people of God? How do we move forward invigorated
by the Holy Spirit?
I recommend using dual perspectives in our ongoing plans for the
health and long term viability of our church. First, what does God want
us to do, independent of pandemic concerns? Second, what does God
want us to do, totally focused on this season of pandemic concern? I
think that strikes the right balance of trust in God’s providential care for
the long term with the vigor required to navigate through specific
challenges in this season(s).
“…what does God want us to do, independent of
pandemic concerns? “
The Reopening Team, led by Bob Wecker, is preparing for major issues
of public worship gatherings, ranging from rigorous cleaning practices
to worship planning, including the training of core volunteers such as
ushers and greeters. This is one area where we need additional
members to step up to being greeters. As our ushers will be directly
assisting worship attendees to their pews, greeters are needed to
assist at doors and help orientate people on how to enter the
sanctuary. Are you willing and able to step forward to help greet in the
name of Christ?
An example of what needs to be done now is using the strength and
structure of our neighborhood groups as fundamental ministry
providers. Social isolation is a real risk to the health and safety of our
members. Wouldn’t it be marvelous if every neighborhood group was
dedicated to ensuring “no one is left out?” Bryan Cooper-Keeble is
helping neighborhood groups take positive action on behalf of their
fellow neighbors, by calling to encourage and pray for one another. Are
you ready for this effort to take neighborhood groups to the next level;
as mid-sized groups of caring for one another and networking with the
pastoral staff & Stephen ministers to provide continuity of care and
concern?
These are examples of ministry opportunities for this season of
pandemic concern and also for the long arc of ALC ministry. This is the
meaningful work of ministry together for the sake of the Gospel. May
God continue to strengthen our faith to proclaim Christ, invite others
and be a blessing in word and deed.
Love,
Pastor Lowell

LETTER FROM COUNCIL PRESIDENT
Dear ALC Congregation,
This has been quite the year, so many
questions and concerns. What is COVID-19? Why the pandemic?
How long will this last? When will things get back to normal?
What does a “new” normal look like? When and how will we get
back to public worship? Why us? Why now? I wish we had the
answer to these questions, but GOD does…and we must trust that
HE will help us. We continue to make plans for the church
reopening for public worship (thanks to efforts of Bob Wecker
and the Reopening Committee), although we still do not have a
targeted date.
Well, with all that is going on, our congregation has stepped up.
We always plan for a decrease in income during the summer
months, because we have so many snowbirds. Yet, with this
decrease in income, our expenses have been lower. Through
continued monetary and prayer-filled support from our members
we have been able to keep our staff employed and poised for
reopening. Thank you! A special “shout out” to our Finance
Committee: (Bob Bouldin, Chair, Harold Moe, Wally Brambilla,
Deb Hjortland, ALC Treasurer, and Julie Ochs, Finance
Coordinator) for their ongoing work in this process.
In next month’s Outreach, I will review some of the Council’s
accomplishments since January 2020 and our continuing goals.
Thank you for your continued generosity and support. WE ARE
THE CHURCH!!!
In Celebration,
Terri Polk
WELLNESS MINUTE
Orthostatic hypotension, also called postural hypotension, is the body’s natural process of counteracting low blood pressure when getting up from sitting or lying down doesn’t work correctly. When you stand up or sit up, signs and symptoms may occur, including dizziness, lightheadedness, blurred or fading vision, weakness, nausea, fainting, and pain in the head, neck or shoulders.
Certain Lifestyle changes can help manage the condition: * Staying Hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, which increases blood volume. *Adding salt to your food must be done carefully and only after discussing it with your doctor. * Avoiding alcohol, as it dilates blood vessels and can worsen orthostatic hypotension. * Eating smaller, more frequent low-carbohydrate meals if your blood pressure drops after you eat, in addition to drinking a glass of water with each meal. * Exercising regularly, after consulting with doctor. * Slowly sitting up before standing when getting out of bed. * Placing 4-6 inch blocks or risers beneath the headboard of your bed to lift your head at night. * Always follow up with your doctor when any symptoms do not go away.

THE FINANCE COMMITTEE
June was a good month for us. Our regular giving in June actually exceeded our original budget by $2000. For the year to date our regular giving income is down $78k (12%) from our original budget, and, for the same period, our expenses are $66k (10%) less than our budget. We have not included the $92,500 PPP grant from the SBA in this analysis.

WORSHIP AND MUSIC Looking back is easier than looking forward these days, especially when the future seems so uncertain, and no doubt, you’ve been reflecting on the things you miss the most. Worshiping together in church is right at the top of MY list! Looking back over the past 15 months, I’m so thankful for the privilege of collaborating with Pastor Lowell and Janet MacDonald, for playing our magnificent organ and accompanying the choir and soloists, who are all so sincere and devout in their music ministry. It’s been a challenging, rewarding time in my music ministry, and I’m so very grateful for your support. We’re pleased that the online viewer numbers continue to grow, and we pray that you are finding comfort and hope in our messages. A special thanks to the summer musicians and readers who have enriched our on-line worship. In August, we’ll enjoy musical offerings by the Christo Bells, John Sipple, Ah-Men Singers, John Tate, Marliss Danielsen and Jackie Huget. Readers Judie Vandervere-Stage, John Sipple, Maryanne Winters, and Denice Louderback will lead us through the book of Romans. August 30 is my last Sunday as Organist. On that day, Pastor Lowell and I will bring a message through music featuring a few of my favorite hymns and composers (so hard to choose just a few favorites!) I hope my musical offerings will be a blessing to you, as you all have been to me.
Faithfully, Linda Shirck, Interim Organist/Worship Coordinator
When in our music God is glorified, And adoration leaves no room for pride, It is as though the whole creation cried:
Alleluia! How oft, in making music,
We have found a new dimension in the world of sound,
As worship moved us to a more profound Alleluia!
Let ev’ry instrument be tuned for praise; Let all rejoice who have a voice to raise;
And may God give us faith to sing always: Alleluia!

NEIGHBORHOOD GROUPS With COVID-19 still raging in our area, state, and country, Pastor Lowell Nelson is very interested in keeping members of ALC connected to what is happening with respect to Church activity, through monthly mailings of Outreach and also emails weekly and at other special times.
A review of the ALC membership list shows there are about 200 active members with no email and a further 100 who are classified as inactive in neighborhood groups. All members of ALC are, or should be, attached to a Neighborhood Group. It is true that members of ALC are not absolutely required to attend group functions. However, those who do so, believe there is a true value spiritually and platonically in attending such functions.
There are 17 active and 6 inactive Neighborhood Groups at ALC. Each leader of an active group has been sent a list of his/her members who do not have an email. Then, when emails are sent out to ALC members, the Leader will contact them with that important information.
So, if you get a call from your Leader please say ‘Thank you’ and realize we are doing our best to keep you informed of interesting church activities during this very disruptive time in our lives.
Blessings to all. Mask up and be safe, Bryan Cooper-Keeble

Truckers Needed We are desperately looking for volunteers to work on our truck one day a week or one Saturday a month. The truck is operated 100% by volunteers. But, we often have more truck than volunteers. We would love to have enough volunteers to run the truck 6 days each week; we struggle to operate 3 days.
Do you have a men’s group, bible study or golf foursome who may like to do some “feel good” volunteering - with people they already know? Working on the truck with your friends is great exercise and an awesome fellowship opportunity.
No special driver’s license required. And not everyone on the truck has to drive! You don’t have to be Captain America to do this job. The truck has a hydraulic lift and we have all the right equipment to haul furniture in and out of homes.
Consider getting a group together to join us, won’t you? Or volunteer as an individual. Call us today to schedule a ride-along with the truckers and see if you can love this job!
THANK YOU FROM DIANE LEWIS My heart is deeply touched from all the prayers and cards I received from my recent carotid artery surgery. I miss you all very much and hope to see all of you when this virus passes us.
Thank you and God Bless you, Diane Lewis

GIFTS AND MEMORIALS INFORMATION Gifts and Memorials have continued to be received during this temporary absence from formal church worship. These donations are greatly appreciated by the various ministries that are then able to do things that are not included in their budgets. We recently provided funding to clean and maintain the Christo Bells that bring us all so much pleasure.
Also some work on our amazing organ is being completed so the organ will continue to provide beautiful music in our sanctuary. The Needy Fund is a vital ministry for members who suddenly are faced with unplanned financial difficulties.
If you are giving a gift or memorial please consider a specific area to designate it such as but not limited to: Debt Reduction, Needy Fund, Music and Worship, Fellowship, Stephen Ministry, Women’s Ministry, Courtyard Update, Bus Replacement Fund and Wednesday Night Alive.
CLOTHING FOR THE NAVAJO NATION
Greetings,
I have been staying in touch with Pastor Kate from the Lutheran Mission in the Navajo Nation. Please keep them in your prayers as their community continues to be devastated by the COVID-19 virus. As Pastor of Spirituality and Care at American Lutheran Church, I am committed to travel there as soon as the pandemic allows, so that we can continue to explore ways to be God’s hands and feet in their community. Let me know if you want to join me in any mission trips there.
Pastor Judith with a Navajo Nation child, prior to COVID-19 restrictions.
Currently they are in need of small children’s clothing for 1st and 2nd graders. They are trying to make plans for school but have decided that the younger children are not equipped to learn online, so they will most likely be attending school in person. Other suggestions include Plexiglas for shields and being able to use our recorded sermons and devotions for their FM radio ministry.
I am willing to take the materials donated to Pastor Kate, as she lives nearby with her husband when they are not living at the mission. They can be dropped off at ALC. I feel our positive response helps us to keep being the church inside and outside our walls.
Prayerfully, Pastor Judith
