HOUSTON '81: a compact but classy convention

While the thunde r thundered outs ide on Friday , we hel d our annual membe rship meeting . We succeeded in b lending our individual and mutual --but diverse --needs as AKA members . When the rain s topped we went out to fly kites , not prepared for the mos quitoes and fire ants in the wet gras s . The l o ca l TV news cove red thi s event .

Friday night the auction proved to be fun for a l l . Steve Edeiken paid $250 for a Texas "Lone Sta r " umb re l la to go with his 25 "Lone Star" Ra inbows . Jane Ambrose auctioned the shirt right off her ba ck .

Saturday was a beautiful day with sun , wind , and temperature in 80's --we flew kites all day . We watched a bal let in the sky with Steve 's Rainbows and two new manufa cturers , Trlby and Hyperkite s . A Smithsonian photographer took p i ctures from a perch on the end of a crane . Don Hering lost a bet with S teve Ede iken because he was not able to keep his 50 ( count 'em) 50 Skys ails airborne for 5 minute s . I t was truly a wild and wonde rful day , complete with Texas b

'a r -be -que

and chuckwagon beans .

Saturday night we dressed for dinne r , and in a more subdued manne r Ma rgo and Bevan Brown passed out awa rds . One went to a Texan , John Jordan , who ha s written a mo s t del ightful book on making kites from throw-away items , such as meat trays and IBM cards . Another award went to Bob Pri ce for his hobby horse kite -b ike -ree l ; another t o Bob Hoddy , a fi reman and new kite dea ler from S cottsdale , AZ, for his enthus iasm and participation in the auction . Corey Jensen won a prize for his Coke can and string!

A trip to NASA on Sunday kept us up in the air - as we lis tened to the guide explain the problems of spa ce trave l , l ike how does one go to the bathroom . Some of us sat in a seat that was used aboard the spa ce capsule . Then while some went to fly kites while waiting for flights home -we had to round 'em up and "carry 'em b a ck to ole Virginny".

Thank you! Thank you ! Don Hering --y'all done rea l good !

Jus t as I was about to write the cover arti cle for this i s sue , two uns o l i cited contributions arrived in the ma il whi ch individua l ly and togethe r , sum up th pleasures of Hous ton pretty we l l .

We gave the lead to Fran Law , who with her s i ster Peggy La chman , ope rates Kra zy Kites in Vi rginia Bea ch , VA . And to the indomi tab le and undup l i catable Dom Ja lbert we , have devoted the first ever AKA NEWS pul l -out Spe cial Supp lement , printing his entire letter "a s presented".

Another fine contribution comes from Steve Berns tein of Arl ington , VA , who ha s provided plans and notes on his ve rs ion of Hiro i 's owl kite .

We thank these good folk for thei r e f forts , and e a ch , of course , will re ceive the contributo r 's patch .

You .'l l also note s ome nifty l ittle "kite cuts " s ta rting to sneak into our copy. The se are the work of New England Regional Director Kitty Corti , who ha s gra cious ly allowed us to steal them from her booklet I Want to Fl y a Kite !

We have enough ove rflow from this i s sue to put mos t of the next one together pretty fa s t . I 'm going to shoot for pub l i cation before Christma s , though past perfo rmance keeps me from promi s ing . I f you wish to contribute , get materials to us befo re De cember 1.

Cheers !

theword from Our Leader. ...

Hurrah for Hous ton! Don Hering , Geof Nesos s i , and the rest of the "Gang of 6" gave us a real Texas -s tyle wel come . Those that were there wil l have fond memo ries . Those o f you who weren 't , mi s s ed a great time . The count wa s about 60, not large , but what a great group !

The Trade Committee met o n Thursday , O ctober 15, and had a good sess ion. The annual bus ine s s meeting , on O ctober 16, was probably the mo s t productive yet . The main a chievements included :

o

o

o

the e s tab l i s hment of an AKA member chapter policy based on Bob Pri ce 's proposal .

a de ci s ion to annua l ly publish an AKA directory with an appendix of AKAa s s o ciated trade l i stings . An infor mal l i s t wi ll be ava i lable i n the interim fo r the cos t of dup l i cation and mail ing from AKA headquarters in Baltimo re.

a deci s ion to change to a fixed annual dues renewal date . Renewal s wi l l b e pro-rated o n conversion . The effe ctive date will be determined by the Exe cutive Committee and announced in De cemb e r ; thi s change will permit the pub l i ca tion of a more current directory. The dire ctory wi l l be sent to a l l members after the first annual renewal cycle .

A summary of is pub l i shed them either

the bus ine s s meeting minutes in this news lette r . Read

be fore or after you fly a kite , your option .

The auction wa s the wilde s t , woo l iest , and mos t hilarious yet! There were top qual i ty items , and all s o l d for generous (AKA thanks you) amount s . Details elsewhere .

Friday a fternoon we went out to fly for a l i ve T V spot and to try out the field . The TV spot wa s great cove rage , but the "s ite" was a b i t swampy and o ccup ied by indignant fire ants . Fo rtunately , the field had dried we l l by Saturday for the Festival , and we warned tho se wandering around with their eyes toward the sky to wat ch out for ant hil l s .

The Festival went ve ry wel l , and your "Pre s . " even b rought his kite for a change . The members we re a l l great about he lping with the Fes tival --about a third of those attending volunteered to work and served as j udges and a s s i s tants . All events went very smoothly .

Fo rtunately , Margo , my right hand /committee -o f -one was there with me . She helped everywhe re , and I couldn't have managed without he r .

Sunday , after the convention , we gathered about 30 people to vi sit the NASA Hous ton Spa ce Flight Center . I t was impress ive event to tho se o f us fami l ia r with the Smiths onian's National Air and Spa ce Museum . We took a tour of Houston Flight Control , then wandered through the othe r bui ldings on our own . One display cons i s ted of a Sa turn V moon landing ro cket laid out ho rizonta l ly with all the module s . WOW! is that impre s s ive !

After the tour we had lunch and flew kites at Crystal Lake to relax before starting the j ourney home .

My thanks to a l l for your support in making this a fantastic weekend !

I strongly recommend that to qualify for the ppizes, a kite has to have been flown successfully uring of the kite fly day/days where everyone can observe its "performance" and judging taken from the· general "Air Borne" time allocated for judging, by Airborne Time that is when the flying area has been reached and kite flyers start to put their pide and joy in the air, with no specific time for this operation within reason, One can't wait till the last hour and must have participated during general flight conditions within reason. Comprehensice Constes.t should be eliminated.

We are basicly interested in the promotion of getting the populace interessed in kite flying and we should strive to attain this objective and make it possible for new-comers to receive Attention with their creations. NONE of the officials should be allowed to compete for prizes. BUT should have the priviledge to show their kites and encourage the new comers. Special awards should be given to officials in the form of plaques or whatever will encourage them to retain their interest' and support. Let's look at it this way--- It's like a grammar school student competing against a Oollege Senior " No Contest" but the the College Senior help the grammar stUdent and point our the wonderful road· ahead by

' continuously trying to' improve his present project

and work himself up to the College Senior level, and someday the graduate daY$ill come for the grammar school student whoc will come along and win a major Kite ?ontest or be the outstanding Man at the Kite Festi var. ,:

Kite conxtest and or estival in various locations. I find that if the leaders contact some of the looal social clubs, such as the Lions, Rotary Kiwanians etc., who will act as sponsors somewhere along the line they will have no fifficulty in obtaining from the City Fathers permits to conduct the Kite Day and even will join in the selection of a proper place. In this manner the local newspapers will give good publicity and a good chanoe foe T V coverage.

I have given Parafoils as prizes for people attending the previous "workshop" and also for the Flying Day. The conditions are that these Parafoils be raffled out and to qualify, two pelple must attend the designated event be it who they may, providing they are together on the same raffle ticket.

General comments about the attendance at the Convention. We should have a location of medium prices, area if possible where one. if desired, eat out without having to hire a cab etc., or do sbme shopp for "something" to take back home. all within walking distance if possible. We're not joggers we are kite flyers.

During the past years outstanding kites always by the same group hace collected the prizes. Let's not have medal collectors but genuine A K A promoters who can do so much good and have a lot of satisfaction in helping in lieu of collecting. It's a wonderfull feeling to know that you have indoctrinated a family into the recreation and art of kite making and the science of kite flying.

We had the most amicable group that I can remember ever assembled under the leadership of our president and lets keep up the

.good work,

talk kites, sleep kitrs, dream kites and make kites! fly k1tes and a brand new World will open up for all of us and we w1ll be azed at the many new friends we will add to our list and A K A membersh1p.

The above are just opinions from one of your original.

foders • . If you agree with me--!!.Fine"if you don't let's get commuIucat10ns al1ve in AKA newsletters and bring some needed life into our organization, and don't forget to back up our new president as well as we have our recent president and his staff of officers.

APENDIX The tent set-up was great, the foo was excellent and that roast beef

Oh La La t'was delicious, The drinks and the people who gave of their time and sacrificed enjoying flying kites, how well I know because r noticed some in the tent (in the food and drink area) were droooooling at the beautiful sight of the most fabulous kite exhibition ever produced.

The display booths were well presented and much good followhsip'was enjoyed and new acquaintances were made. Even after the banquet when these were in the process of being dismantled good followhsip was evident in the cooperation of one helping each another.

The spectacular display of the two train of "Stunt Kites" for the Smithsonian photographer and his reporter who were up on the platform supported by the highest crane available. The then Jalbert Parafoil putti on his two bits who at the request of the Smithsonian people placed his Parafoil in a manner so as if it was supporting the Astrodome at a distance as a background. We're now anxious to receive copies of the Smithsonian that will not only show (we hope) the field events but also the.indoor display in all of its colors anq diversifications of kites.

I also noted many AKA members talking with stanangers who hAd stopped to witness the beautiful display, A family who was on t1meir way further South decided to stay for the rest of the day. S'toooo bad we did not have AKA application forms to pass out witn the "How to form a chaptei:" With continued efforts, process of iliminations of things that need to be corrected we'll have a mighty fine National Organization.

Rick Kinnaird did a magnificient job of auctioner and somehow I think this could be his new career. Our president Bev Brown did a great job as M C with his beautifl wife Margo bot doing bad herself either.

I wonder how many hours Pat Gillgallon has spent preparing and getting out all the information that was passed out and this is also applicable to everyone who contributed to preparing the Convention. Don Hering and his helper Jeff received everyone as if they were enering "Heaven" WOW what a wonderful group,on' of which I am proud to belong.

The slides showing various aspect of life in Chin demonstrated by Dave Checkley was most educational and prove to me that Ch*namen are not all in the laundry business with "No tickee- No washee", but indeed highly artistic minded and wonderful ingenious ·people. !

Until our next Convention---

Mr. Books Leffler - Editor American Kitefliers Association 1104 Fidelity Building 210 N Charles Street Baltimore, Md. 21201

Dear Mr. Leffler:

425 Wavecrest Court

Boca Raton, Florida 33432

Ootober 24 1981

I come to present my observations of my trip to the A K A Convention in Houston last week.

I was met at the Airport in mid-morning of the 15th of October by one of the oficials of the AKA and reported to the hoel, where I checked in and then joined the group who had arrived earlier. It was great to meet all of them and see some familliar faces and renew our friendship, also to meet new-comers for the Convention.'

?For mal meetings in general are much too long and. become boring with l,.ong debates on issues that can be. simplified.

I.shall comments especially on the kite-flying days which were the most specticular of any various configurations of kites assembly anyone had ever seen

The followship was remarkable. Everyone was trying to help each other and it was impossible to pick out the most outstanding kite although some were extraordinarily one of a kind. There were numerous trains of various assortments of kites; from birds with flapping wings to a wide variety of deltas, box and various configurations too nymerous to mentioned. Some had trouble getting adjusted for successful flight. By successful flight I mean flight that remain airborn for a long time fullfilling the. dream of its maker/owner, that in itself represented many hours of "Labor of Love" The most simple three stick and the two stick kites were very beautifjl to observe and their performance of great stability. Some needed more tails than others but they all flew very well.

I firmly recommend that on future constest and Festivals that to qualify for the Comprehensive Contest award the owner and his representative should have the ki$e in the ir like the majority that had been flying during "The Day". Some kites came down on the initial flight, some adjustments were repeatedly made with the end result a beautiful prformance. What good is all of the "Cheese Cake" such as Art, Workmanship Originality if the darn thing can not or will not prform like the majori ty of the kites flying djr.ing "Flight Day/Days"
