AMERICAN-ITALIAN CANCER FOUNDATION
ANNUALREPORT
JULY 2019 – JUNE 2020
DEAR FRIENDS
There is no doubt that 2020 will be a year we will always remember. The coronavirus that rapidly
spread around the world this past winter and spring deeply shook the foundation of health systems,
economies, and societies globally. While this massive health crisis brought dire consequences for
millions of people, it has also shown like never before the key role that healthcare plays in the life
of individuals and communities at large. Today more than ever, AICF is committed to its mission of
supporting cancer research and improving public health.
We are deeply grateful for all the donations and grants we received this year. Thanks to your generosity,
we were able to award 15 post-doc fellowships to talented young researchers working at the top cancer
centers in the country, including Cornell University, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Massachusetts General
Hospital, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, MIT, Northwestern University, Stanford University,
and others. The program selects the best and brightest of young Italian investigators who perform
groundbreaking research in the fields of cancer biology and treatment.
Medically under-served women have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19, which is also
the case when it comes to cancer. Our Mammogram Bus this year served over 3,000 underprivileged
women, of which over 800 required additional testing and were provided with information and referrals
to diagnostic and treatment facilities.
Lastly, we were honored to present the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award to Stefano Pessina, Executive
Vice Chairman and CEO of Walgreens Boots Alliance, for his remarkable career in the healthcare
industry. We were also happy to award the 2019 Prize for Scientific Excellence in Medicine to
Elizabeth Jaffee, MD, FAACR and David Sabatini, MD, PhD for their outstanding contributions to the
scientific and medical community.
None of this would have been possible without your great generosity, support, and dedication.
A special thank you to our generous Board of Directors, our dedicated Scientific Advisory Board
and its Executive Committee, our devoted volunteers, and staff.
We look forward to another year together.
Sincerely,
Daniele D. Bodini
Chairman

AICF’s Mobile, No-cost Breast Cancer Screening Program was launched in 1987, and that
year it supported screenings for 425 women over 22 days. Today, the program has grown
to provide annual mammograms to over 3,000 women. In the past 33 years, it has served
over 113,000 medically underserved women.
The mission of AICF’s Program is to increase breast cancer screening rates in economically
and medically disadvantaged communities—ultimately increasing the rate of detecting
breast cancer earlier. AICF accomplishes this goal by working with trusted community
partners to bring our Mammogram Bus directly to where women live, work, and worship,
thereby addressing financial, cultural, linguistic, and geographic barriers to screening.
In Fiscal Year 2019, the Mammogram Bus provided no-cost breast cancer screenings to
3,067 NYC women. Of the women served, 483 received their baseline mammogram on
AICF’s Mammogram Bus and 871 women were provided with information and referrals to
low-cost diagnostic and treatment facilities.
OUR PROGRAMSMOBILE, NO-COST BREAST CANCER SCREENING PROGRAM
You saved my life! If it had not been for your Mammogram Bus coming to my neighborhood that August day, I would be in California right now, not knowing I have breast cancer. Thank you. — Amelia

INTERNATIONAL POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
The International Post-Doctoral Research
Fellowship Program provides financial
support for bright Italian scientists who
pursue post-doctoral research and advanced
training in collaboration with mentors at
major cancer centers in the United States.
To date, AICF has effectively launched the
careers of 344 young scientists who have
been awarded 487 fellowships since the
program’s inception in 1983.
Post-doctoral research fellowships are a critical
component in advancing cancer research,
as they support talented young scientists with
innovative project ideas at a time in their careers
when funding from other sources is less certain.
An AICF fellowship is awarded for one year.
All applications are reviewed by AICF’s
Scientific Advisory Board Executive Committee.
