Welcome to the American Heritage Committee newsletter “Let Your Light Shine!” Our hope is that through this excellent committee you and your chapter will Rise and Shine for America!

There is no other Committee as dedicated to historical preservation, education and patriotism than the AHC. Every item we enter in the contest, every chapter program that we present culminates in historical preservation.

Our first national chair, Evelyn Cole Peters, asked the DAR members in 1963 to look around their communities and start local museums and historical societies for the preservation of all our cultural artifacts and documents. To this day, DAR daughters have taken heed of that call to arms and significant progress has been made in the formation of many historical societies and local museums!

Do you have any open months for chapter programs? Find that special American Heritage program from the Reporter General’s Webpage! The newly revised CAA still accepts American Heritage programs and you will receive five points for each one presented.

Please meet all of the new National Vice Chair and see if they have any changes to their contest categories. A special thank you to Christine McMahan, our National Vice Chair of Tech Support and Electronic Publications. Her vision and talent have brought this newsletter to reality!

Ms. McMahan has also created a lovely American Heritage brochure that is now available on our national webpage. Please print as many copies as you would like and share them at your August Workshops, Fall Forums, State Conferences and anywhere else you might need them. They are especially beautiful when printed in color, but are just as nice when printed in black and white.

Our National Vice Chairs will happily accept your contest entries between January 2 – February 15th, 2020. Check with your American Heritage state chair for her due date for the

Fiber Arts contest deadline.

I hope each of you will create a beautiful heirloom piece for our American Heritage Contest as we Rise, and Shine our Light on the 19th Amendment.

2. Send by U.S. Mail a completed form and images of entry to appropriate National Vice Chair. Addresses can be found on our American Heritage Committee webpage and in the NIP. Must be postmarked between January 2, 2020–February 15, 2020.

Fall 2019 ~ American Heritage Committee ~ Let Your Light Shine!

Wendy Spooner National Vice Chair –

Art & Sculpture

As I begin my term as Vice Chair over art & sculpture in the American Heritage contest,

I can’t express how excited I am to see the entries that will be submitted this year!

Here are four simple steps to take that will make the submission process easy.

1. Please fill out the entire entry form online before printing, then sign. This way, you can be sure each detail is legible.

2. There are thirteen Art and Sculpture competition categories; Acrylic, Pastels, Oil, Watercolor, Drawing, Multi-media, Collage, Color Photography (unenhanced), Color Photography (enhanced), Black and White Photography, Sculpture, China Painting, Other Art and Sculpture. Please review the Craft AND Fiber Arts categories before submitting to Other (in Art and Sculpture), as the entry may be a better fit for one of those categories. Enter your art creation in the most appropriate category, so you will have your best chance at winning!

3. Please don’t worry about sending an entry by certified mail. It’s too difficult for a chairperson to be available to sign for hundreds of entries. Instead, take your package to the post office for mailing. This way, you will ensure the correct amount of postage is applied, and you’ll get a tracking number for your convenience and peace of mind.

4. Send THREE photos with your entry—one of the entire art piece, and two zoomed in on details that you would specifically like the judges to see. Send also, a disk or flash drive with the same photos on it. Sending two sets of photos—the actual physical photos, and a digital method—is required, and it’s easy! Additionally, you may submit more than one entry in the many different categories—just not two in the same category.

Please note that individual submissions must be the original work of the person entering the contest while a DAR member. For Group Entries, please refer to General Contest Instructions on the main webpage. https://www.dar.org/members/committees/national-committees/american-heritage/art-sculpture.

Best of luck to all of you!

Vickie Canham National Vice Chair–Crafts

Welcome to the American Heritage Crafts

Contest. Our theme this year is “Rise, and

Shine Your Light on the 19th Amendment.” This is such an

exciting theme! I hope you will consider entering. It is

important that you read all instructions carefully. I recommend

that you print out the Committee Home page and the Crafts

page. Use a highlighter or red pen to mark all important contest

rules and guidelines.

Things to remember as you are putting your entry together. Fill

in all information on the entry form and be sure to sign it.

Whether it is clay, basketry, or dolls, every step of your entry

must be made by a DAR member, including the person writing

the essay. You will need to submit three 4”x6” photographs

and 4-10 digital images including 2-3 construction photos.

In the paper category, the judges will be looking at how creative

you are with paper and how you use it. They are not judging on

what is inside the cards, cookbook or scrapbook. Jewelry is

something you would wear and can be made of any material.

Miscellaneous is a broad category, so be careful not to put fiber

based entries here as there is a misc. category in Fiber Arts just

for them. Put forth your best work and remember this is a

national contest you are entering.

This year’s theme is a wonderful opportunity for you to rise and

let your talents shine. When submitting your essay be sure to

include how your entry relates to the theme, how you made

your entry, and list the materials used. Proofread your essay for

spelling and grammatical errors. The essay and how well your

entry incorporates the theme are very important.

There are six Craft categories. If ever in doubt as to which category your entry should be in, please email and I will find an answer for you. Pay attention to the details of your entry, impress the judges and most of all have fun as you Rise and Shine for America. Vickie Canham National Vice Chair - Crafts American Heritage Committee

Sylvia Thorp National Vice Chair–Fiber Arts

The crafting of our Fiber Arts has been in

existence since the evolution of mankind. We

in American Heritage are committed to honor

and recognize these crafts and to encourage their continued

creation. We hope to inspire you to explore your creative talents

and to share your enthusiasm and expertise with others in order

to perpetuate the art using fiber materials.

This 2019-20 season will recognize twelve categories of Fiber

Arts. They are: Embroidery, Cross-Stitch, Needlepoint,

Knitting, Crochet, Hand Quilted Quilts, Hand Quilted Wall

Hangings, Quilt Tops, Weaving, Historic Costume, Rug Making,

and Other Fiber Arts not included above. Please note the

changes in the Quilting categories. We recognize that many

quilters today are using professionals, and others with long arm

quilting machines, to do their machine quilting. Thus, the Quilt

Top category is a way to recognize those quilts that will later be

machine quilted. As of this year, Machine Quilted Quilts and

Machine Quilted Wall Hangings will no longer be accepted in

any category, including Other Fiber Arts. Art Quilts will now

be submitted as a Hand Quilted Quilt or as a Quilt Top,

depending on the method of quilting.

All entries must first be sent to the State American Heritage

Chair, who will determine the deadline date for her state. The

State Chair will then send all winning entries to the National

Fiber Arts Vice-Chair, Sylvia Thorp, postmarked by the deadline

of February 15, 2020.

It is important to visit the Fiber Arts section of the American

Heritage website for specifics of the entry materials. Basically

this includes the entry form, paragraphs explaining how the

creation is constructed and how it relates to the current year’s

theme, and 6-12 photographs and digital images of the entry.

Remember that groups consisting of two or more members of a

chapter, a state, or a family who are all current members of

NSDAR may work together to create an entry. Each entry must

be designed, created, and finished by the individual or participant

of the group. Again, please see the website for specifics.

We must all work to continue the legacy and techniques involved

in the creation of our Fiber Arts. It is inspiring to explore the

fascinating ways to include these Fiber Arts in our creations for

the American Heritage Competition.

Linda Paslov National Vice Chair–

Are you a poet whose rhymes make you smile̶

Dactyl pentameter your rhythm style?

Do you feel that free verse is your friend,

Unfettered by rules with which to contend?

Have you penned stories in Hemingway’s way?

Does weaving a plot line make your best day?

Maybe composing a play gives you thrills;

Developing dialogue brings you chills.

Perhaps you prefer to share history

Instead of a cliff-hanging mystery.

Compiling a memoir may be your gift,

Or even a bio–do you get my drift?

If any of these your passions expressed̶–

These several examples you impressed–

Then enter you should, I highly suggest,

The American Heritage Contest.

OUR PATRIOT

Gentle child, nestled there,

your progeny are amazed at you--

your gloried deeds of distant days, still yet to come in your dear life.

You grew to see the truth of things,

to feel the pull of freedom’s tide and face hard tasks that lay ahead,

the valiant man you did become.

Now, these rambling generations down,

your daughter cozy in a land redeemed,

free to worship, vote, and speak her mind

because you, our father long away, answered the call to liberty.

My children hear the stories now, still told

of your brave legacy,

your hallowed future yet to be,

your hope now our reality.

Sleep on, sweet child. Your time will come.

Susan Malen National Vice Chair—Women in

the Arts Recognition Award

Hello. I’m Susan Malen from the Alaska Chapter in Fairbanks,

Alaska, and I’m honored to serve as the National Vice Chair for

the Women in the Arts Recognition Award. There are so many

incredibly talented women in the arts and I encourage everyone

to consider nominating a worthy candidate. There have been

no changes in the program since last year, but we are trying to

make sure that those considering nominating an artist are aware

that while their contribution to the community is important, that

is not the focus of this award. This award is for outstanding

achievement in their field and the recipient is expected to have

contributed to her artistic field in an outstanding manner

beyond mastery of technique. The two required

recommendation letters must be by non-DAR members and

written on letterhead stationery and identify why the writer is

professionally qualified to evaluate the candidate. Please make

sure that you thoroughly review the requirements for this award

and when you submit your application to confirm that all

supporting documents and photographs are included.

In an effort to streamline the process, I am encouraging nominators to contact me via email at [email protected] prior to submitting an application so that we can review and discuss the application and hopefully answer any questions or concerns prior to actual submission. Hopefully this will make the process less complicated and result in fewer declined applications. I look forward to receiving many applications over the next 3 years and am excited by the prospect of seeing all of the amazing art created by the incredibly talented women.
