What has happened to the Grizzly?

Right now today, only 1% of the grizzlies are living in their former habitats. The grizzly's most common threat is humans. Grizzly bears are often killed by vehicles such as cars, trucks and trains. They are also hunted by humans.

Without our help these animal will soon be extinct.

As many as 10,000 of these great bears inhabited California, when the first settlers, the Spaniards came ashore. Many of these settlers considered the grizzlies to be a liability to their homestead thus went on a genocide to purge their lands of what they perceived as a threat.

During the gold rush, the miners discovered that griz meat could be quite savory, many at the time described the meat to be the finest meat they have ever eaten, so tender and juicy

The grizzly's fur provided the frontiers men with warmth and protection from the harsh

environment. The large hides were in demand as buggy robes, and for bedding in the rough miner's

cabins.

Hunters quickly learned that it often took more than one shot to down a grizzly, as depicted in the 1850s

lithograph. In this fght one badly mauled shooter needed help from two friends to "win" the death

struggle with a large griz.

In 1867 the settlers came up with a new approach of murdering the grizzlies, by poisoning them. The cattlemen and sheepherders took strychnine, and insert it into a 3 to 4 pound fresh piece of beef. Then the cattlemen would drag a part of the beef for 2 or 3 miles around the country attracting the bears then placing the poisoned meat on the bear trail.

In early 1900s, farmers expanded into the hillside area where grizzlies mainly thrived destroying their habitat and eliminating their food sources. The creation of dams also added on to the destruction

*Human’s role in the extinction of the California grizzly.

Page 16: American Grizzly Food SUPPLY

*500 years ago grizzly bears once roamed the Golden Coast abundantly. Today, we can only find remnants of their travels.

Page 17: American Grizzly Food SUPPLY

*The variety of food available in California kept the grizzly happy but it caused competition between humans and bears.

Page 18: American Grizzly Food SUPPLY

*Humans used grizzly bears as a form of entertainment and caused the grizzly population to decrease faster.

Page 19: American Grizzly Food SUPPLY

*As human population grew, so did the need for land expansion. Humans relocated grizzly bears farther into the mountains as far away from civilization.

Forest Ecosystems Grizzly Bears

served as seed dispersers and nutrient providers.

o Seedso Scat and urine

No more bears= less successful forest ecosystems.

Forest Ecosystems Cont.. Grizzlies increase
