American Brass Band Composer: William HimesWould you guess that the composer ofAsryts of Praise was also responsiblcfor Solo Secondo: A Major Wo* lot Sec-ond Hofi and Band? lf you have met BillHimes, you know thatis not only pos-sible, but expected. Serious, yet fun-lovi n& inbense, yet witty and charming- thesc are attributes that fit both hismusic and hispersonality. Such seem-ing contladiction actually aids his cre-ative drive and spirit!

It is amply demonskated herein thatthese Atlanta-based ensembles havejoined the ranks of the world's finestSA musia representatives. All the mu-sic is confidently and accu.ately ex-ecud, inspiration being the commondenominator.

Particularly significant are new brassband work by Stehen Bulla (Chorclean d T occ al q F a nfa / e P r elu d e : P raise H i h ! \and James Curnow (Pr€l deonLobe denHenm). The band is also fcature onDcan's Cofdn's stirring masterpiece,Syrtphony of ThahkgioiflS. The recording quality is tops except fora slight overbalance problemj one istempted to rcach for the volumc con-trol on some of the vocal pieaes.

These two new rcleases by The London Citadel Band of The SalvationArmy (Bram Gregson) certainly placethis band in the forefront of SA corpsbands.I do not know ofanothcr NorthAmerican SA corps band that can comccloseto them in thequalityand scope oftheir recordings over the past twenry-fivc ycars,

Thc Ercelsroldisc holds solid brassbandscores, from the "classic" worksofBallto the Broughton and Downie scores ofmore recent date (though one must re-membcr that CarefirIl dates from about19701). I was particularly pleas€ withthe inclusion of Ball's meditative mas-tetpicce, Sanctuary. American audi-ences might havc a double+ake on themain htinn tune of Downie's Music ofThankgiping, ternindin.g them of "Farabove Ca)'uga's waters" or some otherschool alma mater! Nevertheless, it isan exciting, well-played work. Each ofthe solos includcd are handled withconfidence. Indeed, my only "com-phinf would be with the last two shortitems, contemporary in style, where

Bandmaster Gregson was pcrsuadedto use trumpets instead ofcomets. Thcband is least successful in these twoitens. Overall, however, this is vcryimpressive playing - a very well-trained bandl Song of the Brcthet is atotal success. Euphonium players andbrass band enthusiasts are in for a realkeat here. You get a large number ofthe gleat SA euphonium solos withbrass band accompaniment that arenow available to the gencral public -and masterfully played by Bob andNick Childs lsilaer Ttueails was hrstpublished as a cornet solq Sotlg of lheBrolrer was witten by Leidzen in 1916as a cornet solo, revised in 1932 foreuphonium with band accompani-mentl. Both rccordings have been re-corded and editert by Ted Marshall,

New Music Reviews

Ros€hill Music is continuing its sericsof brass band arrangements of the mu-sic of Andrew Lloyd Webb€r. Twopieces from his latest musical, sllfisetBouleua l, arc r.ow a\ailable.

With One Ink is arranged by WilliamHimes. It has the beauty and simplicityof many of Webber's tunes. Thc solocornet g€ts the firct statement of themain theme, and thcnitisanswered bythe full comet section. The alto homsand flugel have a tuIn, followcd by asoprano and flugel duet. Throw in anice key change along with a repeat ofthe cornet solo, thcn finish with agrandioso ending-a proven formulaformusical succcss. Plalng time is al-most four minutes. Thc technical de-mands are minimal in this ardanaetempo, but there are enough pitchcsabove the staff to causc some problcms. If you like Webbe/s music, you'll likcWith One LDok.

As Il We Neoer Said Coodrye is armagedby Bill Geldard. This piece is cast as atrombonc solo wi th brass band accom-paniment. The soloist needs shong highchops as the lessifrrra starts and remainshigh th@ughout the piece. The slow tomoderate tempo allows plenty of op-

portunities for expressive playing andnrrdlo. Thc band accompaniment istastefully scored, but the soloist stillneeds to "sing through" the back-ground. Thc euphonium and solo cor-net parts are set in a high range andplay important roles. Playing time isabout fivc minutes.

When Sunsef Botleuqrd gains in popu-larity, to the lcvcl of carlier AndrewLloyd Webber musicals, then thcsc ar-rangements will be much bettcr undcr-gtood bybrassbands, and more apprc-ciated by North Amcrican audicnccswho have yet to get a tull dose of this
