Hello and a warm welcome to a brand new community magazine to help you discover not

only what’s going on in Riddings, Leabrooks and Swanwick but also to inform you about

the local businesses and services that are on your doorstep.

This edition highlights Autumn Footprints, which is an annual walking festi-

val co-ordinated by Amber Valley County Council and run by local communi-

ties and volunteers with the aim of keeping us fit, whilst showing us the beau-

tiful countryside that is on all our doorsteps.

This month we are also running an article on Derbyshire County Coun-

cils Trusted Trader Scheme, accompanied by local Trusted Trader Com-

panies who can help us all make those long awaited improvements to our

homes and gardens.

Other things to look out for include the recipe for Hunters Stew on Page 24, which features

the meat of the month, Venison, which can be purchased from Owen Taylor Butchers.

Don’t forget to visit Saffron , The Beauty Room and Walkers Bingo to take full advantage

of the discounts available exclusively to Amber Valley Voice readers.

Finally, if the lack of summery weather is getting

you down, why not book a break on

www.holidayhawk.co.uk on pages 18/19 and prior

to getting into that bikini, get a couple of work

outs booked in at Fizzio-Fit on page 10/11.

In the meantime if there is something else happen-

ing in the area which you think should feature in

the next magazine, please drop me a line.

Until next month, happy reading!

Emily

Editors Choice After speaking to Tessa at the beauty room about my oil prone and open pored skin, she recom-mended a microdermabrasion treatment. I booked in and visited Tessa at home, where the environment was welcoming and relaxing. As soon as she had finished, the results were instantly visible and my skin looked amazing. I would recommend this to anyone whatever your skin type and the price was perfect…..which matches my skin!!

24 ‘Meat of the Month’

SeptemberisVenison Hunters Stew (serves 6)

Ingredients

Method

Ask your butcher to trim the meat for you or do it yourself remov-

ing all the bone or sinew and cut into 5cm cubes. Toss in flour and

add a little salt and pepper. Sauté the shallots in the butter and a

teaspoon of water in a large casserole dish until soft but not

browned. Remove the onions and

add the bacon, cubed, fry until

golden; then remove.

Using the fat in the dish brown the

venison, then add the shallots and

bacon to the casserole. Add bay

leaves and mixed herbs, cover

and put in a slow oven (150oC,

Gas Mark 2) for 2 hours.

Reduce the wine over high heat to

half the original quantity, add to

the stew with carrots and potatoes,

and cook for a further hour.

WinterContainerorHangingBasket.

Whilst we hold out hope for an Indian summer you can’t help but notice the days getting

that bit cooler and the nights closing in. So, why not do something to add a bit of cheer to

your garden during those long winter months and try planting a winter hanging basket or-

container ?

Instead of the usual plants try planting a small

conifer such as cupressus macrocarpa goldcrest

in the centre of the display. Around this you can

plant more hardy bedding plants such as Univer-

sal Pansy, Mini Cyclamen or Bedding Daisies.

Then, try planting a variegated Ivy around the

sides to hang down. If you are of a culinary ilk

sage can also be used, as this is both attractive

and useful.

Top Tip

Why not keep a few spare plants to one side in case any gaps form in your display. This

way they can be easily filled.

Be careful… in winter compost in small containers can freeze so either use a large container

or consider using preventative methods, such as sacking around the container.

My partner and I are running the Bupa Great North Run

this year, taking place on the 19th of this month.

This year we have decided to try and raise some

money for Macmillan because cancer has touched our

lives as it has most peoples. All the fantastic work Mac-

millan do is based on donations and they really need our

support.

Therefore, if Macmillan is a charity that you would be

interested in supporting, why not log onto our page and

donate;

www.justgiving.com/Emily-Liam

Both ourselves and Macmillan would really appreciate

anything that you can give.

Many Thanks

Emily
