“Faith is believing what you want to believe, yet cannot prove.”

Sadly, many people, including some Christians, live with this definition

of faith. For some it feels liberating. It means being able to believe in anything you want to believe. No explanation is required, indeed, no explanation can be given; it is just a matter of faith. For others, such a definition is sickening. Embracing faith means you stop thinking. As faith increases, reason and meaning eventually disappear. No explanations can be given, and none can be expected. Thus, living in faith is living in the dark. For both groups, the problem is the same. By starting with the wrong definition of faith, they have asked the wrong question, are dealing with the

wrong problem, and so have ended up with the wrong answer. Faith is not wishful thinking. It is not about believing in things that do not exist. It neither makes all things believable nor meaning impossible. So what is the right definition of faith? “Faith is the substance of things

hoped for, the evidence of things not seen,” writes the author of Hebrews. A few verses later faith is similarly defined as knowing that God exists and that God

rewards those who earnestly seek Him. Perhaps the best word we can use to translate the Greek word “pistis” (usually translated faith) is the word “trust” or “trustworthy.” Suppose you tell a friend that you have faith in her. What does that mean? It means two things. First, you are sure the person you are talking to actually exists. INSPIRATIONNothing More

~ Elizabeth Hexberg

Meet Martin. With a good Spanish accent, call him “Mar-teen”. Martin is nine years old, but very small for his age. His walk is an unsteady limp-hop, but you won’t notice that after you see his ear-to-ear grin. He doesn’t say much because he can’t, but you can see his joy by the twinkle in his eyes. Today is his day to pass out song books. Martin suffers from traumatic head injury due to an accident at birth, but he has important jobs just like everyone else. I wonder who will help him? Meet Joel. Here again, you must use your Spanish. Call him “Hoh-el”. Joel is a wiry fourteen-year-old with a smile that charms everyone, especially the girls. He sings like an angel and looks like one, too. He doesn’t have a physical disability, but he spent his early years on the street looking for food. We’re working on his education, but God has already given him a huge heart. Joel goes up to Martin from the back, then leans down and takes hold of the little boy’s wrists. Joel guides Martin over to get the songbooks. Martin holds the books in his hands while Joel, still holding Martin’s wrists, guides him over to schoolmates who slide a book out of his hands. Martin is the picture of pride, and Joel’s countenance tells us it’s fun to serve. I wish you could see what I see at the Disabled Children’s Learning Center and the orphanage here in Mexico. The older children serve the younger, and the stronger serve the weak. We are not perfect, and there are squabbles, but overriding it all is the astonishing love of the God who brought us here. Moses, though his strength did not diminish with his age, found himself tired and in need of support during a battle with the Amalekites. According to the story in Deuteronomy 17:8-16, as long as Moses held up his hand, the Israelites prevailed in the battle, but when he lowered his hand, the Amalekites prevailed. Moses’ brother, Aaron was

there, along with Hur. Aaron and Hur placed a stone for Moses to sit on, then stood on either side of him and held up his hands. The Bible says Moses’ hands were steady until the going down of the sun, and Joshua overwhelmed the greater army of the Amalekites. God wanted us to see what He saw that day. It’s written for us in His Word! God wanted so much for us to see what He sees, that he gave us Jesus, His Son. In Jesus, we have the perfect servant-helper, the one who laid aside His splendor and became weak so we could be strong. Jesus defied cultural boundaries to touch lepers, speak to outcast women, and do the dirty work of a slave. If I could see what you see in your home town, would I see the body of Christ stepping out of their comfort zones to serve? What needs have you identified? What will you do? If you could see what I see, I guarantee, that like Martin and Joel, your countenance will beam with the joy of serving Jesus.

INSPIRATIONHoly SpiritBy April James

So who do you talk to in the middle of the night when your husband is snoring and it’s either to early or too late to make phone calls? I love that the Lord is always ready to chat. I like the words to the song, Holy Spirit You Are Welcome Here, but what does it mean? Why do we welcome the Holy Spirit and what does the fullness of an intimate relationship with him look like? You may have figured this out a long time ago, but it’s as if I’m seeing with new eyes. Perhaps I have never sought to truly understand. I liken it to a person reading the Bible yet never coming to a saving belief in Jesus Christ. I have read about the Holy Spirit yet never grasping some of his aspects; His personality and the reality of his equality in the God Head. Yes, we say he is equal, but do we really get it. He is not secondary to God and Jesus. He is not just a teacher, comforter, helper, strength and power, etc. The Holy Spirit has a mind1, a will2 and emotions3. Can you love without emotions? It’s easy and seems natural to say “I love you” to God the Father and God the Son, but I have not considered saying it to God the Holy Spirit. It’s almost as if I had a functioning relationship without the deeper interactive love portion; the head knowledge, interaction as with a friend, but not the deep heart (emotional) intimacy of “knowing”. Why would he grieve4 if there was no love, no emotional outpouring? If he loves us, experiences emotions, wants an intimate5 relationship,

should we not then also love and express that love to Him and not just the Father and Son? Who wants to be in a marriage relationship without intimacy? Without intimate love, marriage is not as fulfilling, the emotional need of our soul is left unsatisfied. In marriage, there are times of complete abandonment of one’s self in moments of intimacy with our partner. So, what if we had that same sense of relinquishment of self to the Holy Spirit, setting our intellect aside, not pursuing the functions, what he does for us, and pursued an intimacy relationship, letting his presence overshadow and penetrate us to the foundation of who we are? Not having a relationship with him to fulfil our need and assignments, but loving him for who he is? I have experienced the Holy Spirit’s presence in varied ways; at times I still have anxiety at the moment of decision, abandon to His presence or keep my composure and stay in control. He is gentle, loving, and kind – thus I can trust him and do not have to always remain in control. I’m still digging in to understand the mysteries of heaven, to develop a greater intimate relationship with Holy Spirit. As we celebrate the Day of Pentecost, the great outpouring of the Holy Spirit, I invite you to journey in as well to discover who he is and the intimate communion (relationship) with him.1. Tomas Perez Some followers of Jesus wait a lifetime to hear His voice. Others hear Him even before fully believing. The latter was the case for Tomas Perez of Yuba City. Raised by a single mother with six siblings, the evidence of God seemed foreign to Tomas. And although his mother owned a bar in Hanford where Tomas spent much of his early years growing up, she instilled positive traits in her children. She was a loving mother surviving with the tools she’d been given. Sometimes our environment dictates our future. At age eight, Tomas began drinking. Later in life, Tomas would eventually hone the art of making his own alcohol. A distorted mind often leads to greater misery. Tomas was no exception. As expected, Tomas landed in jail & faced time in prison if convicted for the crimes charged. At the time, two cell mates were leading a daily bible study and proclaimed the love of Jesus to Tomas. Despite his outward rebellion, the two prophesied the words of Jeremiah (29:11) over Perez. A hardened heart filled with life’s miseries isn’t often open to the council of a loving God. After many court delays before a judge who would determine Tomas fate, Perez actually begged for prison time. In an ironic twist of fate, the judge delayed sentencing. As two jailers returned Tomas to his cell, God clearly spoke to him…..”For I know the promises I have for you, plans of welfare and not for evil, to give

If you would like to experience the peace and transformed life that God can provide through Jesus Christ and you are willing to commit your life to the only one who can truly set you free from your sin, you can pray to the Lord right now and ask Him to forgive you of your sins. Because of what His Son, Jesus, did by dying on the cross, your sins will not be held against you by God anymore. You can experience freedom for the rest of your life on earth and then have a life in Heaven with God for eternity. God’s part of the deal is already done. Your part is to confess your sins, repent (or change your ways) and believe that He is Lord. If your life is out of control, let Him take over control. you a future and a hope”. Tomas stopping dead in his own footsteps, colliding with the two jailers. Perez asked them if they’d heard the voice as well. Of course they hadn’t. As Tomas approached his cell, the two “witnesses” were there waiting. Both had a spirit about them that was almost audible –we know you’ve heard from the Lord! James Harrison, director of the Feather River Men’s Center, had previously visited Tomas but had received a cold & rejected response. Shortly after hearing God’s words however, James returned to speak with Tomas. This time, his demeanor, his spirit, was different. Tomas agreed, if it was the will of the judge, to enter the Center. That was in the fall of 2011. On September 15, 2012, Tomas Perez graduated from the FRMC and since has not looked back. Today, Tomas works for Richard’s Tree Service. Much of his free time is spent in ministry – speaking to troubled youth at Yuba County Juvenile Hall, ushering at the River Bottom’s Church and at his home church, Glad Tidings. This July, Tomas will wed Christina Mason, a strong follower of Christ herself. As Tomas looks back on his life, he sees the powerful & soverign hand of God. He lives daily with the encouraging words from Matthew, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you. For Tomas Perez, God is honoringing this promise and adding to His glory….every day!

Little Help!

The three most common issues I see in my office are depression, anxiety, and communication problems. Many times Christians scold themselves for feeling poorly and often a little education goes a long way. (John 8:32) For instance, depression can be hereditary and have nothing to do with ‘just having more positive thinking’. Other times it can be brief, and situational, like during grieving the death of a loved one. When you understand your depression, you can deal with it more effectively. Anxiety is typically caused by a fear of being out of control in just about any area of life. Most people raised in chaotic homes or who have had traumatic experiences (i.e. war, car accidents, etc.) tend to have chronic fears of being out of control. Learning how to focus on the ‘here and now’ and ‘staying present’ is the biggest challenge of those with anxiety. Most often they are focused on the future and they miss out on today. (Matthew 6:34) Communication problems can ruin just about any relationship. We have many bad habits when it comes to listening and speaking…assumptions, mind reading, jumping to conclusions, and many more. As we learn to be aware of our listening patterns and evaluating how we respond to others, we can be more effective in communication. (James 1:19) Awareness and education; the beginning of healing. The Truth will set you free – Jesus, The Messiah (John 8:32).

other” (Isaiah 45:5-6). Ever since the church began, the refrain has always been the same: Come, believe, follow the light of the world. It has never appealed for people to leap into the dark; no such invitation is found anywhere in Scripture. Instead, we are called to step into the light. The Christian gospel is not a message that revels in ignorance. It is the revelation of God in the person of Christ, so that we might know there is no other. The Christian is called to see things as they really are, and not as she would simply like them to be. We trust in a God who has been revealed to us in the Son and the Spirit. We believe because God is real. The Christian gospel invites you to delve into reality. It commands you to be honest in your commitment to know that which is true. Is Jesus real? Who did

WHAT IS FAITH Cont. from Coverhe claim to be? Is he really alive today? Faith comes in response to knowing the answers to these questions, even as Christ is calling you near. But don’t stop after the initial introductions! Just as you are able to put more trust in someone as you grow to know him, so faith increases as you grow in your relationship with Christ. There is a God who is real and true; there is a God who is near and longing to gather you nearer. The great joy of the Christian faith is found in the person who invites us to trust and believe.

By Jim Denisonwww.denisonforum.org

Seventy percent of Americans who are affiliated with a religious tradition say that many religions can lead to eternal life. Even more frightening, 57 percent of evangelical Protestants agree. Only among Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons do a majority believe that their own religion is the one true faith. What, in our current culture, has caused us to get to this ‘political correctness’ point of view in light of the New Testament teachings that there is only one way to heaven, not several? What is the best way to respond to people who claim to be Christians, but believe the popular belief that ‘all roads lead to the same place’? Jesus very plainly claimed to be the only way to the Father. His Greek was emphatic: “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Peter made the same announcement: “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). However, three “isms” have blunted the edge of such truth. The first is relativism, the idea that all truth is relative and subjective. We’re taught that language is only a convention of human power; words do not describe reality, but

only our version of it. There can be no objective truth claims, only subjective experiences. It’s fine if Christianity is how you experience God, but don’t insist that it is the only way.Our second “ism” is pluralism: different religions are roads up the same mountain. They’re all worshipping the same God, just by different names. It’s fine if Jesus is your road to heaven, but don’t insist that he is the only road. Our third “ism” is universalism, the idea that everyone is going to heaven, no matter what they believe. Only two percent of Americans are afraid that they might go to hell. We’re all on the road to God, whatever we might believe about him. We can respond to relativism with the fact that objective truth is an intellectual and practical necessity in life.

To deny absolutes is to affirm them. If I say, “There is no such thing as absolute truth,” haven’t I made a claim to absolute truth? We can respond to pluralism with the fact that the world’s religions teach

radically different truth, as we’ll see in our next Cultural Commentary. If one is right, the others are wrong. These cannot be different roads up the same mountain—they are different mountains. Finally, we can respond to universalism with the fact that Jesus is the only way to God we need, or can trust. It doesn’t bother me that only one key in my pocket will start my car, so long as it works. Our basic problem with God is called “sin.” We have all made mistakes and committed sins in our lives. These failures have separated us from a righteous

and pure God. The only way to heaven which works is the way which deals with these sins. And only Christianity does. No other religion offers forgiveness for sins, grace for sinners, and the security of salvation. Only Jesus.

Have you experienced his grace? With whom will you share it today?

IN THE NEWS...Death Sentence for Pregnant Christian Woman in

Sudan Appealed; US Congress Calls for Her Release

By Leonardo Blair , Cp ReporterChristianpost.com

A pregnant Sudanese woman was sentenced to death for apostasy (last) month after she refused to renounce her Christian faith. She received some help from a local lawyer who filed an appeal of the controversial verdict, which has attracted international rebuke. (Recently) a bi-partisan group of members of the U.S. Congress also introduced a resolution condemning the sentence delivered to 27-year-old Meriam Yahya Ibrahim by a court in Khartoum, Sudan on May 15, according to CNN. The filing, notes CNN asks the appeals court to reverse the sentence of the lower court and free Ibrahim, who was also convicted her of adultery and

sentenced to 100 lashes for marrying a Christian, Daniel Wani, who is a U.S. citizen. Her lawyer, Mohamed Jar Elnab,

Pastor Saeed Abedini - Beaten and Forcibly Removed From Hospital and Returned to Iranian Prison

says her 20-month-old son is also in prison with her but he can leave at any time. She is eight months pregnant and her husband is in a wheelchair and “totally depends on her for all details of his life.”The appeals court is expected to make a decision next week and the lawyer hopes that the request will be granted. “We will continue checking with the appeals court, but Inshallah (Allah willing) ... the appeal court will reverse the sentence and set her free,” he said.Despite the controversy over whether or not she should be recognized as a Muslim based on her father’s faith, Ibrahim has maintained that she is a Christian and has refused to renounced her faith even in the face of death. Since the verdict was handed down it has attracted rebuke from several foreign embassies in Khartoum including the U.S., the U.K. and Canada. “The fact that a woman could be sentenced to death for her religious choice, and to flogging for being married to a man of an allegedly different religion, is abhorrent and should never be even considered,” Manar Idriss, Amnesty International’s Sudan researcher told CNN. The bipartisan resolution proposed in the U.S. Congress Wednesday “encourages Sudan to respect religious

According to a news release by Jordan Sekulow for the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), the transfer came without any advance notice and family members in Iran confirmed that he was severely beaten at the hospital and then forcibly returned to prison. The reason for the transfer is unclear and according to family members, one of the guards who was involved in the transfer mentioned the Iranian nuclear talks as a possible motive. “This is an extremely disappointing development - one that breaks my heart,” said Naghmeh Abedini, Pastor Saeed’s wife. She added, “Our family is deeply saddened and we continue to pray for Saeed - for his safety and his

release. We are very grateful that so many people around the world continue to pray for Saeed.” According to the news release, when Abedini was transferred to the hospital in March, he was initially shackled by guards who lashed out violently against him. He was also denied medical treatment at that time and family members were prohibited from seeing him. Since then and in the weeks that followed, Abedini’s situation at the hospital improved. Family members were permitted to visit with him frequently and he was provided with nutritional meals. Abedini, a U.S. citizen, turned 34 on May 7 and his return to prison comes as efforts continue in this country and abroad to secure his release. The ACLJ represents Naghmeh Abedini and their two children who live in the United States. The ACLJ is headquartered in Washington, D.C. and focuses on human rights law and constitutional law.

Have you noticed the number of zombies plodding through our culture lately? We seem to be infatuated by the unrelenting lumbering of the walking dead. They’re everywhere. They’re in the movies, on TV and they even have zombie jamborees and parades where folks, pretending to be zombies, lurch their way through the streets of our towns and cities. Well, I think I might have stumbled upon why we have become so engrossed with these gross yet lovable f l e s h - e a t e r s . We, ourselves, are becoming more and more zombie like! You can find us loitering around the mall, staggering down the street or slouched in restaurants and theaters. Heads bowed, eyes glazed by the pale light emitting from a small device in the palm of our hand. But, unlike our traditional zombie brethren, we are completely oblivious to those around us. We do not feed on the flesh of the living…we seek sustenance from cyberspace, feeding on bytes of data that, for the most part, fills us with useless information. We rally to the cry of, “Google It!” and rejoice with a rousing, “Yahoo!” We are…Googlies. Well, in truth, I cannot claim to be a Googlie. I’m about as tech- savvy as a stump. I wouldn’t be caught dead camped out with me in front of Best Buy waiting to purchase the latest and greatest…uh…I-thing-a-ma-jiggy. My mug is not on Facebook and I haven’t tweeted since I cracked my lip with a Yo-Yo many moons ago. I guess what I’m trying to say is; to some, technology has become an object of worship…an idol. I also think technology has reached critical mass and

has outpaced our ability to police it. I’m not sold on the value of social media and the internet is wrought with filth and evil. Now don’t get me wrong, I appreciate many of the innovative and beneficial things technology has brought, but I’m not about to face Silicon Valley and pray to Intel. It just seems that for every positive innovation there is an equal and opposite innovation. And it seems that all this “progress” is secular and pretty much

amoral. It’s for the world and of the world. There are literally thousands of “Apps” for worldly living but only a few for salvation and eternal life. Actually, there is really only one valid “App”

for Salvation and Eternal Life…and that is found in The Word Of God…The Bible. But lately, just as on the internet, hackers have been planting viruses into the body of Christ and attempting to rewrite God’s code. We are severely warned in Revelation 22:18 (and I paraphrase). If anyone adds anything to or takes anything from the Word Of God there will be some pretty dire consequences. I also believe that whoever does not seek and apply the one and only “App” for Salvation and Eternal Life, will truly be…“the walking dead.”

CBA MARKETPLACE MONTHLY

I Need A Personal Revivalby David Kugelman

Let me start with a few questions: 1. What do you think about each day? 2. (a) What do you worry about most each day? (b) How much time do you spend worrying about those things? 3. (maybe the most important question) How much time do you spend with God each day? The answer to the third question will help you understand your answers to the first two questions. Lately, I’ve noticed that my zeal, my enthusiasm, my excitement for the Lord has not been what it used to be. God brought me to the following verse to help me identify the “why” behind my current spiritual condition. Revelation 2:4-5a (NLT) “But I have this complaint against you. You don’t love me or each other as you did at first! Look how far you have fallen! Turn back to me and do the works you did at first..... Stay with me. Keep reading. This article may be about my story, but my hope is that it has some impact on your story as well. I got saved in 1992 and serious about my faith in 1997. (There is a difference) By 1998 I was in church each weekend, a Bible study every Monday night, men’s prayer at 5:30 a.m. two mornings per week, fasted one day each week. In addition, my wife and I attended a home group twice a month and we were frequently attending Christian conferences, concerts etc. Is God telling me to go back and get involved in each and every one of those activities previously mentioned? I don’t believe so. But here is the point. My investment (actual time spent) in my relationship with Jesus Christ in those early days was significant and so was my passion and zeal for Him! The greater the investment, the greater the return. Invest little, receive little, Invest more, receive more. And the good news is this: He is worth it! He won’t disappoint. I know because I’ve experienced the joy and excitement that comes from spending time With Jesus in prayer, Bible reading, worship, fellowship etc. My commitment as of the writing of this article is to spend more time with Him each and every day. My hope is that you will do the same. The more time we spend with Him, the more we become like Him. The more we become like Him, the more everyone around us will be positively impacted by our Christ-like lives.David Kugelman is the president of the Christian Business Alliance which meets each Tuesday at noon at various locations. EDITORIALAS WE SEE IT

Seth Halpern - Editor

UnCovered CA I signed up for the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) last year and expected there to be some wrinkles to get ironed out. Well, wrinkles doesn’t begin to describe it. Let me tell you as briefly as I can. After signing up, I looked for a doctor. Previously uninsured (due to pre-existing conditions), I needed to visit the “free” clinics. I’m not going to complain about them because it’s what I would expect. However, after hearing promises of quality healthcare for all, blah, blah, blah, I expected that the new coverage would at least be adequate. Unfortunately, while the “coverage” is good- affordable copays, reasonable deductibles, etc., there’s one minor “snag”. NO ONE ACCEPTS IT! That’s right. Trying to find a provider that accepts Covered CA plans is ridiculous. Who do you think accepts it? You guessed it- the “free” clinics I went to BEFORE I had “Insurance”! Of course, now I’m paying a premium to go there. But wait! It gets better. Now I find out that my cardiologist (whom I have seen since my heart surgery- without insurance) is “out of network” He wants to be “in network” but they won’t let him! We are also in need of another specialist for which there is no provider in the network. I was extremely frustrated, disappointed, discouraged, angry, (fill in the emotion). So, I did a little digging on the web. I found that people across the state are having the exact same experience. They can’t find a single provider to accept their “insurance” Maybe I should spell it Insuranze, like they do with WINGZ when they’re not real but pretend chicken (or chiken)... After all, Covered CA says that based on our eligibility, they are paying the difference of the premium to Anthem Blue Cross. This means that Anthem is receiving their full premium between

my payment and Covered CA. So, I’m confused about WHY there should be any difference between my coverage or provider network and someone who pays for private insurance. I’m not an expert in insurance matters, but I know basic math and this simply does not “add up”. At this point, I was ready to launch a thorough investigation into who’s pocketing from it. I was about to burst emotionally when God stepped in and showed that I wasn’t the one who needed to pursue this. I’m thankful for the people who have the skill and desire to bring out the truth in such matters. I also admire the Godly politicians who go to battle for legislation in Jesus name. However, with my health issues and workload, I’m not the guy to steer it. What God did show me, through the help of a friend (thanks Donna) is that we cannot and should not depend on the world, our government, or even insurance or doctors to be our providers. It’s not just a bumper sticker when I say that truly God is my Preferred Provider. I’m not against going to the doctor as some religions teach. On the other hand, I have only one Savior and He is definitely “in-network”! There are a lot of people suffering in the mess of this system and I pray that the truth will expose any corruption and the glitches will be corrected. More importantly though, I pray that each one will look to the only one who can ultimately heal not only the body, but the soul and provide the hope that no government system could ever offer.

Thank you for the Ambassador! I have been wanting to get

my hands around the State of Jefferson, and the front page

article did it for me. Also, the teasers stood out for me, even

before you mentioned it in your update. Excellent because

they really did tease me. Each article I have read so far, has

spoken to me. Priceless!

Thank you Seth.
