Thebonanza:Rs100crore.ThecompanyhasalreadyjoinedtheboardoftrusteesandforkedoutRs70croreforthemodernisationofoneofthecity'soldesthospital.TherestRs30croreisinthepipeline.Reliance'sgenerositywillhelpcompletetheongoingbuildingconstructionandequipthehospitalwithstateoftheartequipmentfortertiaryhealthcarefacilitieslikecardiaccatheterisationlaboratory,nuclearmedicinedepartmentandsoon.SpeakingtoTheFinancialExpress,presidentofthehospitaltrust,BalakrishnaMehtasaid:``OnDecember2,1997amemorandumofunderstandingwassignedbetweenSirHurkisondasNurrotumdasHospitaltrustandRelianceIndustriesforajointtrusteeship.Wewillbeworkingtogetheronvariousprojectsofthehospitalinfuture,butitisstilltooprematuretosayanythingfurtheratthisstage.''ReliancemanagingdirectorAnilAmbanihasalreadyjoinedtheboardofdirectorsofthehospital.

Itisbelievedthathemaytakeoverasthechairmanofthehospitallater.Thehospital,undertheAmbanis,isexpectedtoberunoncommerciallinesalongwithphilanthropicactivitiessuchasofferingthebestmedicalfacilitiesfortheneedyatconcessionalrates.Sourceswithinthehospitalsuggestthatcorporatehouseswanttohaveaventforsomephilanthropicactivity.Startingahospitalisthebestwaytoreachouttothedeprivedsectionofthesociety.TheHindujas,theTatasarerunninghospitalsinthetertiaryhealthsector,andRelianceisjustmerelyfollowingthetrend.Thehospitalwasstartedin1925bySirHurkisondasNurrotumdas,whowantedtoequipthehospitalwiththebestmedicalfacilitiesinthecountry.Thehospitalstartedoutmodestlywithjustaonestoreystructurewith40beds,halfofthemfreeinkeepingwiththecharitableobjectiveofNurrotumdas.Aspartofitsexpansionplans,thehospitalhadacquiredanadjacentplotoflandanda21storeycomplexwithanexclusivebasementcarparkfacilityiscurrentlyunderconstruction.Fourteenfloorshasalreadybeencompletedandtheremainingpartoftheconstructionisexpectedtobecompleteinanotheryear.Oncompletionthehospitalisexpectedtohaveatotalof585beds.Thehospitalisalreadygearinguptobethebestinthecity.Therearealsonumberofnewfacilities,likethecardiaccatheterisationlaboratory,fournewoperationtheatresapartfromtheonesalreadyexistingwiththelatestequipment,Neonatologydepartment,solarwaterheatingsystem,generator&incinerator,andnuclearmedicinedepartmentaresomeofthenewfacilitieswhichareexclusivetothehospital.Thehospitalhasrecentlystartedanewcentreforhearttreatment.CalledtheIndoAmericanCardivascularCentreexclusivelyfordiagnosisandtreatmentofcardiacandvasculardisease.Thecentre,whichisbuiltatacostofRs7crore,possessesthelatesttechnologies,includingtheAdvantrixLCV,thatenablesawholebodyangiographyandangioplasty.
