Amazon Fishing News

Acute Angling’s Quarterly Fishing Newsletter

After a season’s hiatus, Barbara Francisca, our long-time host on the Blackwater Explorer (she’s been on the boat since it was built in 2007) is back. Veteran Amazon anglers know that this means the best caipirinhas in Amazonia (Brazil’s national cocktail) and an array of delicious appe-tizers will once again be at hand as soon as they return from a hard day’s fishing. Someone has to prepare them for a hard night’s bragging! Along with her devotion to keeping our anglers happy and client services on the Blackwater Explorer running smoothly, the English-speaking Barbara is also known to tie the best peacock bass jigs on the river (see Page 6). Welcome back!

Summer, 2013

The Blackwater Explorer yacht is probably the most productive pea-cock bass fishing machine in the Ama-zon. Last season’s results were so good that it’s hard to believe there could be a better way to go about catching these superb sportfish (without a gillnet!). Our clients con-sistently have solid success, catching great numbers of peacocks and huge trophies in each of our fishing regions. We have the stats to prove it and it’s worth repeating them. See Page 2 ...

Most Productive Trip in the Amazon!

Get ready for the Amazon Season! Spaces Are Filling Fast in 3 Fantastic Fisheries Comfort and Elegance Afloat - The Ama-zon’s most polished and productive fishing machine, the Blackwater Explorer Yacht is preparing another assault on the waters of the Rio Negro Basin for the 2012 and 2013 fish-ing season. This luxurious operation is indis-putably the best fishing value in the Amazon!

A Beach Vacation in the Amazon - With giant peacock bass right at your doorstep. We park our air-conditioned floating bungalow camp on beautiful white sand beaches in remote headwa-ters fisheries. Available during the Amazon’s optimal low water season.

Incredible Variety - We return to the Rio Travessão with an upgraded safari camp to keep you comfortable and a new satel-lite camp to provide more water to ex-plore. This haven for river giants holds monster catfish, fierce payara, acrobatic bicuda and tough fast-water peacocks.

Barbara’s Back on the Blackwater!

Branco basin as water levels dictate. We are not tied to a fixed weekly route or resupply point to keep operating costs down. This allows us to be in optimal water levels and prime conditions throughout the season, not stuck in a single locale, subject to the whims of its local weather . Finally, we’ve made a commitment to putting fishing success ahead of economizing. We’ll happily burn diesel to put you in the best place, even if it means changing a river system overnight. We have been known to “leave ‘em biting” more than once when changing loca-tions meant we could “find ‘em biting” even better. Understanding the fishing data - We are very precise about our catch data and the weights of our fish. All large fish are weighed on a boga-grip, so that when we describe a trophy weight, it’s precise. Many operations train their guides to augment weights so that every angler believes he’s gotten a 20 pounder. We’ve seen photos of fish that don’t exceed 15 lbs labeled as 20 lbs plus. This doesn’t accom-plish anything other than to create false perceptions and inflated expec-tations. We just don’t do this. Our trophies are real and our data is accurate - we averaged 161 peacocks/angler/week and 39 trophies per group! We challenge our competition to match this productivity. Although our 2013-14 schedule is filling up fast, plenty of great spots still remain. Join us! For more information, visit our website or call Paul Reiss, toll-free, at 866 832-2987.

Reprinted from last Issue - These statistics are worth revisiting. Acute Angling’s clients have consistently solid success on the Blackwa-ter Explorer, Why so good? Well, there’s a method to our madness. To be successful at something as complex as a wilderness fishing adventure requires the development of the tools and techniques to make it happen. Just like a “five-tools” ball player, we’ve worked to polish every aspect of our game; tight logistics, attentive service, excellent accommodations and superior food and drink all must come together to produce a satisfying fishing adventure. But, outstanding fishing prow-ess is the key component that turns a “satisfying” trip into the “fishing trip of a lifetime” - and we can flat-out prove we do this better than any-one. This isn’t bluster or braggadocio, it’s simply the clear, statistically analyzable result of our approach to peacock bass fishing and the imple-mentation of a doctoral degree’s worth of knowledge and experience. You can see the proof of our success in the chart at the top of this page.. There’s no secret, just key differences between us and everyone else in how we choose to fulfill our responsibility to produce fish for you. First, we’ve invested the time and research to achieve a superior level of knowledge and understanding of our quarry’s life cycle. In fishing, “knowledge is power”. We simply know what the fish are do-ing, where to be and when to be there, better than the rest. Second, we are true nomads. We use our great mobility to fish tributaries in the Rio Madeira basin, the Rio Negro basin and the Rio

For the last decade our specialized tackle site has been avail-able online to provide our clients with the unique tackle needed for Amazon fishing trips. As you may have gathered from our previ-ous mini-newsletters and articles, our e-commerce site, Tackle-Box.net has gone through a metamorphosis over the past few months and has now come back on-line in an all new format. We took advantage of the quiet period we usually experience in the spring-time to take Tackle-Box off-line for awhile to update some of the under-lying code necessary to function in today’s web environment. The result is that our new site has greater accessibil-ity and easier functionality, to enhance your shopping experience. We have a newer look, stronger on-line security and streamlined order processing functions. Identification Keys

A favorite tactic of catfishermen is to catch a small piranha for live or fresh cut bait. Using a large (14/0 to 20/0) circle hook, haywire twisted to 18 inches of strong (180 lb. test or greater ) wire then twisted to a heavy (180 lb. test swivel creates an easily made, replaceable rig. A 2 ounce (or heavier - as current demands) egg sinker is allowed to run freely on heavy line (65 lb or greater) braided line. This wire reinforced "Amazon" rig helps keep piranha away from the running line and mini-mizes the loss of hook, line and sinker. Correctly selecting a hole that holds a piraiba is not a given. Anglers will typically try spots that provide some turbulence or back current over a deep hole. Generally, if other, smaller, catfish like jundia are pre-sent, you probably haven't found the monster's home. Enjoy the smaller but spunky, and superbly tasty jundira and then move on to the next hole.

Once the behemoth's home is found, the "take" is often surprisingly subtle, not screaming like a redtail. With an open bail (or clicker on) allow line to be taken until the fish is moving away and has had a chance to en-gulf the bait. Point the rod tip upward, engage your reel, then let the rod be pulled downward until it points at the fish. Sensing resistance, the fish will usually react by running and hooking himself with the circle hook. This method is highly recommended because it will unfailingly result in a safe hookset in the corner of the fish's mouth, never in its gullet or stomach. Once the fight is on, the rest is up to the angler, because with a fish this large that likes to run rap-ids, wind around logs and is agile enough to heave its bulk out of the water, the rest is unpredictable.

The largest of the Amazon catfish, piraiba have been described as attaining weights in excess of 450 pounds. Interestingly, for such a large catfish they are very athletic and readily venture into open, run-ning water. Overnight campers on riverbanks have been shocked awake at the crashing racket occurring when 200 or more pounds of leaping piraiba slams back into the water after a nighttime aerial exploit.

In 2007 Russell Jensen of Bronx, NY caught this 295 lb piraiba on an Acute Angling trip. At the time, it

was the largest catfish ever recorded on rod and reel .

January - Fish with a “Hall of Famer” If this guy can handle a fishing rod the way he handles a baseball bat, there are going to be a lot of sore-lipped peacock bass in the Amazon next season! With a lifetime batting average of .328, 3010 career hits and the skills to define him as one of baseball’s quintessential hit-ters, Wade Boggs stands among the giants of Major League baseball. Come January 24th, 2014, Wade will join Acute Angling on the Blackwater Explorer in a quest for a new, “fishier” kind of success. With world-record peacock bass await-ing his arrival in the Rio Ne-gro basin, Wade might just have the chance to stand among the giants of Amazon fishing too. Together with Steve Scott of “Big Hunt Media”, Wade will be filming a peacock bass episode for the TV show “Outdoor Guide” during his week aboard the Blackwater Explorer yacht ... And he is inviting Acute Angling’s clients to join him! Here’s your opportunity to enjoy the fishing trip

of a lifetime and to rub elbows with one of baseball’s greatest lifetime hitters at the same time.

Wade is a gregarious guy , a devoted sportsman and not at all shy about mixing with other anglers of a similar mindset. You’ll be welcomed as both a fellow angler and a fan with no reservations. You may very well end up being part of the TV show. We expect this to be one of the most memorable peacock bass trips we’ve ever op-erated. Not only are we planning a trip with a baseball superstar, but we’ve selected one of the very best fishing weeks of the year. With expected optimally low water levels , we figure this will be a great “big fish” week. Space is available on this very special trip at our regular price of $4,750. If you’ve been to a

major league ballgame recently, you’ll realize that you can probably get more baseball in the Amazon at a better price than a premium seat at a ballpark. And of course, you’ll catch the world’s greatest sportfish in the bargain.

March - Fish with Paul Reiss and Helen

Hosted by Paul Reiss and Helen Kerekes

March 24th through 31st, 2014. Golden Dorado in the beautiful Isoro Marsh of the Rio Parana

The Isoro Marsh, sitting between the Rio Parana and Rio Corrientes at the confluence of the Isoro river, is one of the few remaining natural en-vironments along the route of the dorado’s yearly spawning migration. Here, big breeders come to reproduce within the natural fish nursery offered by the marshland’s complex network of islands and canals. Both fly-fishermen and conventional an-glers alike can enjoy the kind of productive, well-rounded and satisfying experience that anglers asso-ciated with the pursuit of the wild golden dorado in the past, before recent development and unlike some of today’s concrete-lined destinations. In March of 2014, just when winter’s cold has thoroughly kicked our collective butts, my better-

half, Helen and I will head to Buenos Aires to es-cape the seasonal doldrums and pursue the golden dorado in a warm, comfortable and beautiful set-ting. We invite you to join us. We have space for 6 anglers on what we plan to be a grown-up’s “rite-of-spring” party. What could be better than a week of great fishing, gourmet food, Argentina’s superb Malbec wines and pleasant, like-minded company. Call us, toll-free, at 866-832-2987 for more information. Just $4550 per angler.

February - Fish with a “TV Fishing Star” Most Amazon anglers know of Acute Angling associate and TV fishing show host Steve Town-son. The current Amazon Peacock Bass World Champion's latest series “Fishing Expedition - Amazonia” has been seen all over the world - as far as Australia and New Zealand, Africa and most of Europe - and is currently being aired on Discov-ery UK, hopefully to hit US TV screens soon. Eight half-hour episodes were shot on the Rio Paru and Rio Travessão. With incredible footage of topwater explosions from big riverine Peacock Bass, line-stripping Payara (Vampire Fish), burly Trairão (Wolf Fish), Pacu, Giant Cats and loads more, it was a series Steve enjoyed making to the

max. Now he’s back, hosting two weeks on the Rio Travessão this winter, one in Janu-ary (already full) and a second week from February 10-17, currently with 6 spaces still open. Steve has filmed on this river three times in the last 6 years and states categorically, that this river is his #1 fishing destination anywhere in the world! He fishes here at least twice a year for what he describes as the most diverse freshwater fishing to be had anywhere on the planet. Want to join Steve on a week of fun and games on the wonderful Rio Travessão?

Amaz0n Tidbits - News from the RIVER

Even more amazing than the amazing fishes of the Amazon, is the amount of rumor and gossip generated about it. This col-umn will appear from time to time in an effort to report ac-tual news before it evolves into wildly inexplicable fiction.

Rio Marie closed to sport fishing This wonderful, giant peacock fishery, which Acute An-gling first explored in 2009 and then made exclusively available to its anglers for the next three seasons, has now been closed to all sportfishing due to a series of disruptive illegal acts instigated by an aggressive operating company, competing for exclusive waters in a more predatory fashion than the sportfish it pursues. Following the fall 2011 season, this other operator attempted to forcibly usurp Acute Angling’s access to this fishery and to gain exclusive rights for themselves, via a series of inappropriate illegal acts, and directly in the face of our existing, government approved contracts. This occurred in a river system with over 250 miles of fishable water that could readily accommodate several operations simultaneously. Being anglers and not warmakers, we asked to meet with them to discuss the situation. We then simply offered to share the fishery with them. They promptly declined and made it clear that they preferred to have it all for themselves.

The ongoing tensions became so high that by 2012 we re-quested police presence in our camps to ensure that no untoward issues would arise. That prompted us to make the decision that we preferred not to operate in such a charged environment. It wasn’t fun anymore, so we removed the river from our schedule. The other operator, however, continued to offer this river as one of its destinations, even in the face of official action result-ing from their activities in the region. As a result of these activi-ties and the ongoing fracas over access, the Brazilian Public Ministry has now ruled that the river will be closed to future sportfishing activity. The operator has been ordered to desist from offering or promoting this fishery and to cancel any an-glers who were booked there. If you know someone who has booked a trip with anyone with the expectation of fishing the Rio Marie, you would be doing them a service by making them aware of the river’s closure. They run the risk of finding them-selves fishing in a river they had not expected to be in. The losers in all of this are sportfishermen and the local resi-dents. As a result of unfair competition, a world-record fishery has been made unavailable to anglers and the region’s indige-nous people have lost a meaningful source of renewable income.

We fish for peacock bass mostly because the darn things are so amazingly powerful. So you’d think we wouldn’t get upset when they break our rods, snap our line or explode our reels. But we sure do get upset, because equipment failure almost al-ways results in a lost trophy. Usually it’s our own fault; horsing the fish; too tight a drag; overexcitement. In those cases, after a few days, we usually come to grips with our loss and accept it for what it was. Somehow though, when the failure is unexplainable, we just can’t let go and we tend to mourn the breakdown forever! We want our an-glers happy, not mourn-ing lost fish! Nothing makes them happier that a honking big peacock, so we’re always looking for ways to improve the catch ratio on our trips. As part of that effort, we’ve tinkered and evolved and created our super effective “Peacock Bass Rattle Jig”. If you’ve used them, you know they’re the single most productive peacock bass lure you can tie on. But like all fishing gear, they too can fail under extreme stress. Of course, Murphy’s Law says they’ll fail just when you’ve hooked the biggest fish of the trip. So now, we’ve rein-

vented our own best lure and made it even better. Gone is the familiar 5/0 Gamakatsu, replaced by the strongest commercially available jig hook on the market today; a 6/0 extra-strong Mustad. More than twice as strong as the original. The big-ger, stronger nickel-plated hook has a wider gap too - an enormous 3/4 inch space - to accommodate the jawbone of even the biggest

peacock, minimizing damaging torque and failed hooksets. So it’s not only stronger, it’s more resistant to the forces that generate most of the stress on a hook in the first place. All of our jig’s other attributes remain just as effective as before. Our jig design is based on scientific understanding of ichthyofaunal predator prey interactions … not someone’s uneducated guess as to what looks good. The subtle but

critically important characteristics we build in, make our jigs supe-rior fish attractors compared to imitators found elsewhere. Not only is world’s most effective peacock bass jig now also the world’s strongest ... but the price remains exactly the same! The peacock bass rattle jig can be purchased at www.tackle-box.net and on all of Acute Angling’s Amazon trips
