A MAZING G RACE March, 2020 Volume 62, Issue 2 We have now entered the season of Lent. It is the season before Easter. It has historically been a season of added study, reflection and worship for Christians as we follow Je- sus ministry leading to his betrayal, suffering, death and res- urrection. This year our theme is A Promise is a Promise”. We will be studying five of the major covenants of the Old Testament that God made with his people. A covenant is an agreement between parties. In these covenants God has made promises to us about how he will relate to us and sometimes how we are to relate to others. God is always the initiator. How people respond may affect the outcome. We will be looking at questions like: What is the Covenant, What is the Covenants purpose then and now, How does Jesus fulfill/complete the Covenant, and Are there any further impli- cations for your life today. Our Wednesdays together this Lenten season are meant to bless us in a variety of ways. During worship we will seek to grow in our understanding of how God has been and contin- ues to be active in our lives and the lives of all his beloved people. During this time God will also be at work through his Holy Spirit to cultivate and grow our faith in his son Jesus as our Lord and Savior. We have now entered the season of Lent. It is the season before Easter. It has historically been a season of added study, reflection and worship for Christians as we follow Je-sus ministry leading to his betrayal, suffering, death and res-urrection. This year our theme is “A Promise is a Promise”. We will be studying five of the major covenants of the Old Testament that God made with his people. A covenant is an agreement between parties. In these covenants God has made promises to us about how he will relate to us and sometimes how we are to relate to others. God is always the initiator. How people respond may affect the outcome. We will be looking at questions like: What is the Covenant, What is the Covenant’s purpose then and now, How does Jesus fulfill/complete the Covenant, and Are there any further impli-cations for your life today.

Our Wednesdays together this Lenten season are meant to bless us in a variety of ways. During worship we will seek to grow in our understanding of how God has been and contin-ues to be active in our lives and the lives of all his beloved people. The endowment fund was up $103,004.72 up from the previous year of $89,476.35. Friendship: Anne Shroyer- No report received. Lay/Witness: Linda Jenkins- No report received. Worship: The Worship Committee met February 4th 2020 with the following members present: Pastor Shelly, Rick Sailor, Rick Russell, Jennifer Woolley, Kristen Davis and Toni Leininger. The meeting was opened with prayer by Pastor Shelly. The Christmas services were discussed, and it was felt by all that the services were well attended. There were thirty more peo-ple this year at the 7:00 P.M. Christmas Eve service, and there were twelve less at the 10:30 service. Thirty people were in at-tendance for the Christmas morning service. The CAC will be asked to review whether to continue having the Christmas morn-ing service, as there are not many that usually attend this service. The Worship Committee wishes to thank Greg and Jennifer Woolley and Jason and April Platfoot and their families for the wonderful job they did decorating the church for the Christmas season. The Woolleys and the Platfoots will be stepping down from the decorating committee. It was then discussed as to who to ask to chair the Christmas decorating committee for 2020. Two names were discussed, and Rick Sailor will talk with these individ-uals to see if they would be willing to chair Christmas decorating. It was also mentioned that possibly the catechism students and their parents could also be on the committee as this could be an-other service project for them. Pastor Shelly said that the deacon’s meeting went very well. But the question did arise as to who is responsible to change the ban-ners in the front of the church. New poles are being purchased/donated as the current ones are not in very good shape. It was decided that members of the Worship Committee will change ban-ners as each season changes. It was then discussed as to who is responsible for laundering the Altar and Communion Linens. Members of the Altar Committee take care of the Altar Linens, and Pastor Shelly asked if the plexi-glass could be placed over the Fair Linen to keep it cleaner. Pas-tor Shelly advised that we need to do something with the old com-munion linens and broken pottery chalice. Rick Sailor will make sure that the old linens are burned along with the retired American flags this coming September at the yearly burning of torn flags that the boy scouts help with at the American Legion. The broken chalice will be buried somewhere on the church grounds. The older communion ware, has been placed in a box for use at ser-vices outside the church.

The upcoming Lenten/Easter season was then discussed. The Holden Evening Prayer Liturgy will be used again this year for the Lenten services. The theme for each of the Lenten services will be a study of the different covenants from the old testament. We will again be having meals before each service, and Toni is contacting the different organizations in the church to sponsor each weekly meal. It was suggested that the monies from each meal be donated to worthy causes in the church or community such as the Christmas Tree fund, the church parking lot, the Lu-ther League Mission trip, or the We Care Fund. The catechism students helped burn palm leaves from last year’s Palm Sunday to help with making the ashes used for the Ash Wednesday ser-vice. We will also be communing at the chancel rail for both Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday services. Upcoming services were then discussed in which we will have guest speakers. On March 1st Pastor Wayne DeWet of One Plus God will be preaching at both services and speaking during adult Sunday School. The main topic of his message will be on mis-sions. Jews for Jesus Missionary Alexander Adelson will be in attend-ance on March 29th, and will be also speaking at both services. The focus of his message is Christ in the Passover. The Choir will be leading services on April 26th, with a message through song. Rick Russell is coordinating this service. The next meeting will be on March 31st at 7:00 P.M. The meet-ing was closed with all praying the Lord’s Prayer. Youth: The Luther League will be traveling to Dayton help with tornado clean up on March 14th leaving the Church at 9:00 am. The Luther League will be going on a mission trip to Louisville, TN June 7th-12th. Property & Trustee: Tom Schindel & Rick Sailor- No report received.

Pastors will work on incorporating a stewardship Sunday into the Lenten season. Christmas decoration donations totaled $1,163.01. Organ repair update: On the second visit by the repairman, the organ seems to be in working order. The CAC is looking at the possibility of accepting a Conn Electric organ as a donation from the Methodist Church.

Committee Reports

Mission Committee: The Mission Committee met on the snowy night of February 12, 2020. The upcoming pork dinner fundrais-er for the Tanzania Orphanage was discussed. This carry out meal will be held on March 1st from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm at Grace Church and items included are pork loin, baked potato, roll, ap-plesauce, and butter/sour cream all for $7.00. We will have some kids helping with the distribution of the carry out meals at the South side of the church so that people would not have to get out of their vehicles. We would like to have the majority of the tickets sold by February 23rd so we know how much food is needed. Information regarding this dinner will be posted on the town electronic sign. We did have a donor that has purchased several meals for the shut ins within our congregation. The Mis-sion Committee will call these individuals ahead of time and de-liver the meals. Pastor Wayne from "One Plus God Ministries" will be preaching to the congregation on Sunday, March 1st during the sermon times of both early and late services as well as speaking during the Sunday School Adult hour. He will be discussing the im-portance of missions and sharing his story about how God has worked through his life. The Mission Committee would like to take up a collection at the back of the church for Pastor Wayne's "One Plus God Ministries" after both services. After the late service anyone is welcome to stay and join Pastor Wayne and the Mission Committee to have a more in depth conversation about missions and have further discussions on a trip to the Tan-zania Orphanage. A light lunch will be served. It was discussed that potentially in April the committee would like to do a video conference with some of the leaders of the "Home of Peace" Orphanage. We would like to talk to them per-sonally, get some information from them, and obtain some pic-tures. This information would be organized into a newsletter and sent to sponsors of the orphanage. Submitted by Julie Klopfenstein

Lay Witness- Lay Witness met February 9, 2020. Barb Elsass opened our meeting with devotions from John 16:33 concerning overcoming tribulation. We are reminded that Jesus said be-cause we are in world we will have tribulation but we may be of good cheer for he has overcome the world. Susan Ware re-viewed highlights from the January minutes. Members reported 4 visits with our shut ins and 2 received Communion. President Linda Jenkins passed out an update shut in list. Pastor Bert shared he and Pastor Shelly’s shut in visitation schedule. Linda Jenkins reported that plans are in place for the February 15th Alpha Center meal. Tom & Darlene Woolley, Jen Woolley & family, Sandy Roach and members of the Luther League will be serving the meal. Linda reported that the congregation has re-sponded to our request for a donation of personal care items to be distributed to those attending the dinner. We thank you. New business included welcoming baby Rocco Shuff son of Michelle & Patrick Shuff. Linda reported she had made up a ba-by bag that was delivered by Pastors Bert & Shelly.

Circle 1

Circle one met Wednesday, February 5th, as Barb Wical opened the meeting sharing “Prayer for a spirit of Service.” Bible study continued following the opening prayer. Jesus taught His disci-ples about service. He served His friends as we are called to follow this example and serve the people God has placed in our lives. Vice President, Sharon Lenhart, presided for the business meet-ing. Seven members answered roll call describing our first “crush”. Minutes of the January meeting were read and correct-ed. Treasurer, Marge, reported a balance of $215.42. Projects for February include personal care kits for Lutheran World relief. Also sewing day to make quilts will be held on Feb-ruary 20. In old business, an $100 donation was made by WOC for the Christmas decorations fund. Members also discussed whether we would continue having refreshments at our meetings. We decided to continue this discussion next month. Praying the Lord’s Prayer concluded our meeting. Sharon Len-hart served delicious valentine goodies. Submitted by Secretary, Barb Wical

Circle 2 Circle 2 met February 3, 2020. April Platfoot lead our new bible study Becoming Yourself by Stasi Eldredge. In the study we look at ourselves, our mistakes, failures, growth, accomplishments to becoming our truer self. We discussed all these things and ulti-mately, it is less about our own effort and more about the process of allowing God to restore us. We had six members answer roll call by telling us their favorite Valentine gift. Treasurers report $89.08 after a $50.00 donation for Christmas decorations. No Old Business New Business: Lenten meals will be starting. Waiting to hear what date the WOC will have and decide what we will be serving. WOC will be deciding if they will have an Easter breakfast of let the Friendship committee handle it. Sewing day will be February 20 at 9am. WOC will be collecting personal care kits during the month of February. Barb Wical is the chairperson. With no further business, we closed the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer. Men’s Ministry

Men's group met Monday February 17th. The meeting was opened with prayer by Fritz Serr. We discussed our plans for the Lenten meal that we will be serving on March 25th. We would like to thank in advance, all the men that support us in serving this meal. I will be contacting you soon! We discussed our lesson "Why Men Fail". Through our studies, we found that men's failures are linked to the constituency of our quiet time. Quiet time is the time we spend in developing our rela-tionship with God. Our entire life and all that we do in our life must be based on this relationship with God. Our next meeting will be March 16th at 7:00 PM. Our next topic

is "A Man of the Word". We closed with prayer by Pastor Bert.

Thank you’s Thank you from the family of Lenora Pulfer. We wish to thank Pastor Shelly for her compassionate and spiritual care during our mother’s passing. She glows with the love of Jesus and her “spunky-spirit” is filled with Joy! We thank the lay ministry “angels” who, faithfully, visited mom and gave communion. Know that you have deeply touched our lives by taking time to be with our mom. Thank you for the cards sent from the congregation throughout the years while mom was a resident at Dorothy Love Skilled West. When we close our eyes and reflect, we can hear the voices of Grace singing, “My Church, My Church, My Dear Old Church…”. Jeanie, Jacquie, Connie, Tom & Mark

Christmas Decorations for 2020 Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Christmas decoration fund. There was $1,163.01 collected for the purchase of new decorations for next year.

Grace Church Family, Thank you so very much for wrapping our family in thoughts and prayers as we welcomed our son, Gatlin James into the world last month. We are so thankful for the support not only in prayer, but also in all of the gifts and hand-made treasures that were given to us. Thank you all for thinking about us during this time! Love, Luke and Allissa Creager.

Blessings and Thank you to all from the children at Wernle youth and treatment center. Thank you for the welcome to your Church. Chris Parker

Sunday, March 29th at 8:00 AM & 10:30 AM, Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church will host "Christ in the Passover: A Presentation." This powerful presenta-tion, shared by Alexander Adelson from Jews for Je-sus, will demonstrate the link between the Jewish feast of Passover and the last supper Jesus shared with His disciples. Join us for an explanation of the beautiful symbolism of the Jewish ceremony called a seder. We will weave the story of the exodus and freedom from slavery together with the messianic hope realized in Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. The words “do this in remembrance of me” will take on an even deeper meaning to Christians as we learn the significance of the tradition Jesus observed the night before He died and give us a closer look at the very Jewish life He led. Jewish or not, religious or not, all are welcome for this unforgettable, thought-provoking experience. Have questions?
