Thermal Physics... Hot topic in JEE
The topic mentioned in the heading is just too damn heavy for JEE - Yes, heavy in terms
of it's weightage in JEE.
To get a feel of how important it is, pick up the past year JEE papers. Each JEE paper
contains at least 5-10 problems from thermal physics. So better prepare it well.
Basics : This include the topics of thermal expansion, thermal stress etc. They are simple
topics and must be done if you have solved a few standard problems. The problems of
expansion involving liquids inside a container are important and easy. You may be asked to
measure the new length measured by the scale when scale and the object(whose length is
to be measured), both expand. Such problems are easy and interesting and must be done
in a single shot.
Heat Transfer : Slightly important topic. I remember there was a question regarding
calculation of equivalent thermal conductivity in JEE 2013. Although JEE mentions heat
conduction in one dimension, you still may try heat conduction through a cylinder (2
dimensions) and heat conduction through a sphere (3 dimensions) for Olympiads. Laws of
radiation and Newton's laws of cooling are important. You should learn the definitions of
emissivity/emmisive power/absorptivity/etc by heart. I remember I used to mix these
definitions. Pick up HC Verma and learn the definitions in that book. Kirchoff's law, Wein's
displacement law, Stefan's law etc are important and easy to grasp topics.
Thermodynamics : Here comes the big gun. This topic is extremely important because
having a grip on this will help you not only in physics but also in chemistry. Learn the
specific heat capacities of various gases at constant pressure and constant volume. They
won't be given in exam. Learn the definitions of various processes, most important one
being isotropic process. Solve a large number of problems from thermodynamics of ideal
gas. A word of caution here. Make sure that you don't mix up the physics and chemistry
conventions of First law of thermodynamics. They take work done as negative in chemistry
but not in physics.
Books : HC Verma, Arihant. These two books are more than enough.

Under 100 rank
Revision : Revision packages like FIITJEE GMP, resonance Rank booster or the one
provided by your coaching.
Final word : Practice a number of problems from the First law of thermodynamics. It's
really really important from the point of JEE. Also, it is important from the point of Indian
National Physics Olympiad. I remember having a 13 mark question in INPhO 2013 from a
combination of SHM and Adiabatic process. So better learn the formulas of Work done,
Heat and change in internal energy in all the processes.
Cheers

Hi bhaiya! I've sent a mail timed 21:42, 25th Feb regarding a few queries, if you could clear
them away. Thanks..!

Aman Goel 27 February 2014 at 14:12
well I don't like email. Better post it here unless its absolutely necessary.
Abhinav Kumar 27 February 2014 at 15:34
Well...I think it's absolutely necessary. Still, OK. The eBook for Maths material from
Bansal Classes wasn't opening ; I've tried many times.
2. Theory-wise, is Class 11 and Class 12 NCERT are sufficient w.r.t. Physics & Chemistry
for JEE (Main) and What wud be the ideal source for revision thru solving problems to
really have good speed and better prep 4 Main ? Cause I've only 2 Weeks for it after
Boards. I am really concerned regarding the required speed as I feel Attempting even
75 - 80 QUES. out of 90 is Tough !!
3. Can u please tell me from where can I get IIT-B's PLANCESS Notebook+ (their latest
feature), as even AIR - 1 Prudhvi Teja bhaiya had acclaimed it in a video?? I really like
its feature of "A Formula at Footer of Its Every Page" & want it 'desperately' !
Thanks for your help and time....!!!!
Aman Goel 27 February 2014 at 18:27
For the ebook, please try to re-download it. I didn't receive any other complaints.
For practice, there are a number of revision packages available in the market. You can
buy any of them.
Make sure that you have covered NCERT completely. It's extremely important from
the point of JEE main.
Keep calm and prepare well.
For that plancess material : I really don't know

Hey,
How would rate the Thermodynamics part from I E Irodov wrt JEE adv ?
Reply
Aman Goel 28 February 2014 at 09:39
It's awesome. It contains some brilliant questions on thermodynamics of an ideal gas.
PS : Irodov is the best book for "ALL" Jee chapters. The point is that you will have to
stick to syllabus otherwise you will end up wasting time. However, if you want to go
beyond the limits of syllabus (olympiads), then go ahead - most toppers do it (after
ensuring that things mentioned in syllabus have been completed perfectly)
rock_star1136 1 March 2014 at 00:00
Hi Aman, you have mentioned in almost all comments regarding Irodov that stick to syllabus,
but since I don't have a good teacher to guide me through, how will I come to know which
problems are in syllabus since I don't think I will myself be able to identify them as I will be
doing it for the first time.

Hi Aman,
I am class 12 student and am writing my board exams now. Even though I joined coaching
class, I didn't study properly. So I am very weak in problem solving. But I understand theory
very well.how can I improve on problem solving. Should I keep looking at solutions and writing
it down, Coz I dont have any idea. Can you plz help me?

Aman Goel 1 March 2014 at 23:14
I really don't know how to help you. JEE is on the head. This is something that is not
expected from a true JEE aspirant.
Sorry, I don't know how to help.
One last suggestion. Post your problem on Quora. There are other experts there who
will probably help you. The more opinions you get - the better

"How to approach problems ? " : A JEE aspirant gets the answer to this question in
his/her 2 years of JEE preparation.
How did I study ? - read the blog.

Hey Aman....is this a good way:doing 1-1.5hr serious study.....take a break of 5-10min break n

Hi aman...
How much should I score in the AITS of a reputed institute like resonance to secure a rank of
under 200 in jee?
What I mean to ask is that generally how much difference is there between cumulative %age of
aits and JEE?
Reply
Aman Goel 6 March 2014 at 15:14
For under 200 rank, you percentile should be above 99% (at least)
Jaivardhan's Blog 10 March 2014 at 02:31
Yeah but suppose I score 65% on average in AITS, how much will I score on "the
day"? Will it be less than that? If so, by how much percent(meaning 63 or 60 instead of
65% types)?
Aman Goel 11 March 2014 at 19:15

Hey buddy.....let me explain a problem I'm facing....apart from standard textbooks....i have the
dlp of BT....+study material of a local tutorial(where I'm undergoing JEE preparation)....let me
consider the case of maths...i have Arihant(entire series)+BT+Bansal DPP+local tutorial's
Sheets....so I'm pretty confused....my questions are(they apply for Physics & Chemistry as well)
1)do i need to do all these materials? If yes .....please mention the sequence.....
2)If no is the answer to question 1...please tell which is to be used as base...then for Level-2
problems....then L-3 and so on....?

please take these minor decisions yourself.
I have already told what "I" used. I can't tell you what "you" should use.
Shikhar Tiwari 16 March 2014 at 12:30
There is an advise that whenever you recommend a book to us please give a flipkart link or a
cover pic of the book like u did this time. Also divide the book in two parts the first part where
you did the theory and the second for practice
Also if I do theory from resnick halliday and practice from HCV and DC Pandey then will it
suffice
Reply
Aman Goel 17 March 2014 at 21:19
sure.
But this could have been mentioned in "blog feedback/suggestions" post.
Yeah your plan for physics is good.
But do keep a track of syllabus when you read halliday
