AMADPOC PROGRAMME activities Vision: Recognition of the role and interplay of migration policy and
development policy, inter-ethnic relations and other spheres of
national as well as international development, intra-regional
harmony and inter-regional interdependence within a globalizing
world in which diversity calls for viable South-North and South-
South partnerships.
Mission: AMADPOC aims to deepen viable international partnerships,
embed research in society and build capacity of African Countries in
the corridors of research institutions, national governments and
inter-governmental cooperation with development partners on
migration and development issues affecting them individually and in
South-North and South-South relations.
About Us The African Migration and Development Policy Centre (AMADPOC)
is a not-for profit organization that aims to undertake and streamline
policy-oriented research, training and dialogue on internal as well
as international forms of voluntary, forced and irregular migration as
they affect and are in turn affected by development within the sub-
Saharan African (SSA) countries and in the region’s interrelations
with the North and the rest of the South.
Immediate Objectives
• To provide the bridge between AU and EU member states and
other regional organizations in migration research, policy,
programmes and dialogue in the context of development policy.
• To undertake and coordinate research and utilize research
findings on all forms of migration to influence development policy
in SSA countries as well as Regional Economic Communities
(RECs) between SSA countries and the North and within the
south
• To develop a viable migration centre including a data hub and a
library on various forms of migration, relying on African
datasets – notably censuses and surveys and other data-
collection systems –to avoid reliance on data procured
exclusively in the North. • To keep track of out –migration vis-à-vis in-migration within SSA
and both flows and stocks of emigration and immigration into
SSA countries, ascertaining migrant characteristics as well as
determinants and consequences of different types of migration.
• To provide diverse forms of training to individuals, institutions,
countries, RECs and their development partners to further and
share new knowledge and information on, and to build capacity
in, analyzing migration –development interrelations. • To convene a variety of dialogue activities, including workshops,
seminars and conferences for SSA countries, the REC member
states and their development partners in the North as well as the
South.
• To evolve migration and development policy coherence at
national, regional and inter-regional levels, fostering cooperation
in SSA countries, the AU, RECs and SSA-North, intra- SSA and
SSA-South cooperation. Programme Activities Research and Data Hub (RDH): Conduct empirical research as well as provision of direct and/or
advisory technical assistance to regional and national programmes
for situation analysis of internal and international migration in the
Greater Horn of Africa (GHA); internal displacement of population
(IDP); brain drain and brain gain as well as brain circulation and
contribution of diasporas in homeland development and human
security and its effects on development.
Training and Capacity Building (TCB): • Short-term courses on migration-development nexus, including
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and any such
frameworks for policy makers and programme implementers. • Conduct workshops and seminars on migration-development
policy nexus, migration management in-country, along common
borders and involving third countries, and within a defined
development region, such as Regional Economic Communities
(RECs): EAC, IGAD, COMESA, ECOWAS, SADC. • Liaise with SSA and GHA universities for post-graduate training
in Migration, Human Security and Development Studies
(MIHUSEDES) and other programmes. The quest for incorporating
migration in various facets and levels of development requires
post-graduate training in which AMADPOC collaborates with
universities and other stakeholders on certified courses.
Policy Dialogue and Networking (PDN): AMADPOC will offer a variety of dialogue opportunities, including:
• Workshops on particular topics requiring development for future
research and training;
• Seminars based on ongoing/accomplished research, policy
development and programmes; and
• Conferences which will draw participants from the GHA region
and the wider SSA as well as participants from the North and
other parts of the South.
Outputs of these policy and dialogue initiatives will include
publications aimed at particular audiences: a quarterly newsletter,
working papers, Discussion papers and Policy Briefs, books
/monographs and a quarterly journal, African Migration Review
containing peer-reviewed scholarly and policy oriented articles.
Resource Centre (RC): The ultimate objective of the Resource Centre will be to develop a
state-of-the-art facility for collection, storage, retrieval and
dissemination of print and electronic material on migration in SSA
and other areas which the region sustains links with.
Specifically the Resource Centre will:
• Collect from a variety of sources of print and electronic material
the necessary migration information generated by the research
community, training institutions and policy making bodies.
• Organize the available material in easily accessible and
retrievable form for users;
• Establish sustainable links with similar institutions within and
outside of the GHA region;
• Publish from time to time an online newsletter and a magazine
covering relevant material for distribution within research,
training and dialogue networks and other partners in working
relationship with the Research Centre; and
• Assist the Publication/Communication Director with the
publication (on-line and print) and dissemination of AMADPOC’s
• Product as well as its acquisition of products from other
institutions to which it is linked.
