AA MMEESSSSAAGGEE FFRROOMM OOUURR PPRREESSIIDDEENNTT Greetings Ladies,

I trust you all have enjoyed a great summer. There has been plenty of UMW excitement this year. This is the year that brings Autonomy to the United Methodist Women Organization.

What does that mean? It means the policy making body of the UMW is now separate from the Church's Mission agency. We will be Governed by a 25 member board of directors elected by us through Jurisdictional channels.

We celebrated this historical vote in Portland this year at the Jurisdictional meeting where the theme "Fire in my soul" gained momentum and revived our commitment to our sisterhood.

The Church Annual Conference announced District changes; we now have four Districts in our Cal-Pac Conference instead of eight. They are "West, East, North, South.” Our UMW Conference President confirmed to us that these changes do not affect Cal - Pac United Methodist Women. We are still eight Districts presently. We are, however, given more flexibility in our team structures.

The SCM was wonderful. I look forward to seeing all of you at Grace UMC for the Los Angeles District Mini School on August 25th, where we will share with you the information from the school.

Then, plan on joining your District Team at the Annual Meeting in September. We need all of you there to approve the budget, install the Team for the coming year and accept your various certificates of achievement for Mission today, five star, reading program, etc. So get those reports in now.

Working for Mission is fun, we need you all to join in to put our Faith Hope and Love into action.

You probably find the articles in RESPONSE as inspiring as I. In view of aspects of

change that we are currently experiencing, I found the article by Sharon Vandegrift, entitled “Moving Forward,” July/August 2012, p.10, particularly, inspiring.. She states, “No

matter where the journey takes us, we will always be at home in the embrace of the Holy Spirit.” She further reminds us that change is inevitable, and that how we navigate change is a choice.

Foremost in her article is the reminder that to understand the change process there must be the intentional resolve to move forward and that “Coming to the place where we acknowledge that things cannot stay the same is a pivotal point. Ultimately our inspiration

is in our faith that the Holy Spirit, whose presence is beyond place and time, is partnering with us throughout the process of change and awaiting us in the goodness of an exciting future filled with delight and joy.”

For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. When you search for me you will find me, if you seek me with

all your heart, I will let you find me, says the Lord.” Jeremiah 29:11-14a PRAYER

Holy God, whose presence has enveloped us in the past, sustains us in the present and will revitalize us in the future. Grant us the courage to embrace change with an optimistic curiosity. In Christ. Amen The Rev. Sharon Vandegrift

Hello Everyone,

It’s hard to believe the District Annual Celebration is quickly approaching on September 22, 2012. All this year I have tried to think of ways to get you to memorize our Purpose. Do you know it yet? Try this missing word challenge. The ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ church. This is an ultimate challenge.

I hope many of you had the opportunity to attend the School of Christian Mission,

but if you didn’t the District offers a Mini School on August 25, 2012 at Grace UMC. The same studies will be taught, but on an abbreviated basis. The next event will be the Annual Celebration that will culminate this year’s activities and welcome the new slate of officers as the retiring officers are recognized for their service.

Hope to see all of you soon.

Reaching for Christ, CCaarroollyynn MMccGGrruuddeerr

Greetings my Sisters,

The 2012 Quadrennial General Conference of the United Methodist Church was held April 24 to May 4, 2012 in Tampa, Florida. Below is a report on some of the action that took place.

2012 QUADRENNIAL GENERAL CONFERENCE The Quadrennial General Conference of the United Methodist Church was historic for United Methodist

Women. Our national policymaking body is now an autonomous agency, and structural changes are underway to strengthen ties between local women and their national policymaking body and empower districts and conferences to organize for mission in ways that best suit their contexts. This is a landmark!

And every landmark carries important information about where a sojourner is along her trek and what

she must do to complete her mission. We have come a long way since our foremothers determined in 1869 to put their faith, hope and love

into action by organizing themselves for mission focused on the needs and concerns of women, children and youth, those deemed "the least," Christ's kin, the most vulnerable in every nation, including their own. We have grown into a community of women that includes every race, ethnicity and age under the sun. We have stood up for the impoverished, for justice, for mercy and shared our resources. We've run a long time and have covered a lot of ground, but our race is not over.

United Methodist Women, it is time to catch our second wind! There is work to be done! Tell newly

retired sisters, youth, college students, returning women veterans that United Methodist Women is a community where they can purpose "to know God" and "create a supportive fellowship" as they stir up the gifts of God that are within them, fan them into a flame! And put them to work in Christ's mission through United Methodist Women.

Resolution The General Conference called for "an immediate unilateral cease fire" and an end to one of the longest

U.S. wars when it adopted United Methodist Women's "Seeking Peace in Afghanistan" resolution, May 1st. The resolution urges Afghan, U.S. and NATO powers to reallocate the more than $1billion a year used for the war to meet the needs of people in their respective countries and worldwide.

The United Methodist Church approved this resolution on Afghanistan the same day President Barack

Obama made a surprise visit to meet with Afghan President Harmid Karzai and to sign an agreement on the relationship between the two countries going forward. According to news sources, the agreement is meant to signal the "beginning of the end" of the war.

I recommend the following books which are on the LADUMW Reading Program: The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander, civil

rights lawyer, law professor and former director of the ACLU’s Racial Justice Project in Northern California. The author reports that “One in three young African American men is currently under the control of the criminal justice system: in prison, in jail, on probation or on parole.” She goes on to say that “Nothing has contributed more to the systematic incarceration of people of color in the United States than the War of Drugs.” Although blacks and whites violate drug laws at roughly equal rates, young black men are overwhelmingly incarcerated and stigmatized as “felons” under the current legal scheme and targeted by law enforcement authorities with unfettered discretion to raid poor minority neighborhoods as part of the war on drugs. The book gives a detailed analysis of how African Americans face severe discrimination at every stage of the criminal justice system: from discriminatory racial profiling by law enforcement officers (who can stop and search without a warrant) to plea bargaining (only 4 percent of criminal cases go to trial). After release from prison, racial minorities who are labeled as “felons” face insurmountable obstacles to live a normal life and/or find employment, are disqualified from education loans, public housing, public benefits or jury service.

Ms. Alexander backs up her contentions with an

impressive bibliography of studies, news articles and reports, to bring the message home to us of the plight of those who are the victims of a criminal in-justice system. Her goal is to start an inclusive racial justice movement to bring about change in the current criminal in-justice system.

This Child Will Be Great is an autobiography by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first woman President of

Liberia and a 2011 Nobel Peace Prize recipient. It tells the unique history of Liberia as a nation which includes former slaves and a multi-faith population of both Christians and Muslims. Ms. Sirleaf herself married out of high school, became a young mother, and experienced the conflict between her growing self-identity and marriage to a controlling and increasingly distant husband while studying abroad in the United States. Her career achievements in both corporate America (with Citibank) and at the World Bank provided her with options when she had to flee hostile regime changes in her home country. We learn about a woman who was outspoken on behalf of social justice and yet was pragmatic when working for the prior civil administrations of her country. We get inspired by a woman who faced danger and possible death with courage and bravery. Ms. Sirleaf’s story shows us that each opportunity presented to us in life is precious; as her growth in leadership from the opportunities presented to her was sorely needed by her country and made such a global impact.

Michelle Alexander was in Los Angeles on May 10, 2012, as the featured speaker of the workshop held at the New Philadelphia AME Church, called “Come Let Us Reason Together: Faith Communities Confronting California’s Criminal In-Justice System.”

I also recommend as supplemental reading, Joe Domanick’s book on Cruel Justice: Three Strikes and the Politics of Crime in America’s Golden State, which gives an excellent journalistic account of the events, people and forces which resulted in the current three-strikes legislation in California.

The following book is also excellent reading: How Great Women Lead: A Mother-Daughter Adventure into the Lives of Women Shaping the World by Bonnie St. John and Darcy Deane, written by a mother-daughter team based on interviews of women leaders such as Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Hillary Clinton, Wendy Kopp, Geena Davis, etc..

Greetings, Summer is almost over and it's time to report the books you have read between 2008 and now

that you have not reported before. School of Christian Mission books (Haiti, Poverty and Immigration for 2012) count. Please turn in your forms to your local Secretary of Program Resources or to your President. All reports are due by August 31, 2012.

If you would like to share information or recommend a particular book you have read, please submit that information separately. As space permits it will be published in the Party Line.

Please remember to encourage our children to read. Books are always available for purchase! Hoping to see you at the District Celebration on September 22, 2012 at La Tijera UMC when the certificates will be awarded. Shalom, PAT THOMAS, Coordinator for Program Resources

EDUCATION AND INTERPRETATION Greetings everyone,

Hope all is well with all our UMW local units. Spring is here and summer is rising upon us. The Mission Today Unit forms for 2012 will be mailed to each Local unit President, hopefully by mid-July. I will do my best to assist with any questions. I will be asking to receive the completed form by the end of August so we can prepare for our L.A. District annual celebration in September. My hope is that each unit will be completing pledge to mission, prayer calendar use, adding new members, and using programs from the UMW program book. These are just a few items that are on the Mission Today Unit form.

Our Membership Nurture and Outreach Coordinator would like a UMW count from each local unit. I will include this request with the material to be mailed. I hope and believe each local unit will submit a form this year. If you have not received the MTU 2012 form by mid-July, please call 323-778-2985 or email [email protected]. The Mission Resource Center has a UMW sampler subscription which includes: Spiritual Growth Study, Mission Study, Program Book, Prayer Calendar, Date Book and Updated Women’s Division literature and resources – all available for $35 per year. The Mission Resource subscription may be purchased by calling 800-305-9857 or via e-store at www.missionresourcecenter.org.

Let us continue in Mission and believe “We can do all things through Christ that strengthens us.” (Philippians 4:13)

Peace,

Patricia Whitman E AND I MISSION COORDINATOR

Life’s winners says Phyllis C. Michael aren’t the ones who stroll down Easy Street till they

find a pot of gold right there beneath their feet. They’re the ones who walk on bravely in spite of all their pains; They’re the ones who climb each mountain, though it’s ever so steep and rough. Yes, they’re the ones – the real true winners, they’re made of life’s finest stuff!

A TRUE WINNER is THE CALIFORNIA PACIFIC UMW. We are the only conference,

according to Jacque Howard, who was awarded a gold certificate for organizing 5 or more units in 2011. Special congratulations are in order. Job well done.

TRUE WINNERS are THE LOS ANGELES DISTRICT UNITS. Their percentage of

report submissions on their 2011 membership was greatly increased. This year sixty seven percent of all the elibible units completed and sent in their forms. Based on their input, L.A. District members in 2010 totaled 915. 42 new members were added and 45 members were removed, by death or by choice, in 2011. Therefore, total members in 2011 was 912. Thanks to the presidents and MNO coordinators for your special efforts.

A TRUE WINNER is THE SOCIAL ACTION EVENT ATTENDEES AND PARTICIPANTS,

who attended the Social Action Event on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at Crenshaw UMC. The theme was “Cultivating Positive Change Through Information, Insight and Action.” Their understanding and commitment to human rights issues and advocacy was deepened. Don’t forget to “Do The Right Thing.” Reach Out, Reach Out.

A TRUE WINNER is THE LOS ANGELES DISTRICT MNO COORDINATOR. Now that

my term has expired, thanks to those who gave me an opportunity to serve on the District Team in numerous capacities including Social Action Coordinator and MNO Coordinator. Through God’s guidance, I tried to fulfill the responsibilities as best as I could. God bless! Your prayers were appreciated.

A TRUE WINNER is THE L.A. DISTRICT TEAM AND THE UMW MEMBERS. They know

that the kingdom of love is coming because… Somewhere someone is kind when others are unkind. Somewhere someone shares with another in need. Somewhere someone refuses to hate, while others hate. Somewhere someone is patient and waits in love. Somewhere someone retruns good for evil. Somewhere someone serves another in love. Somewhere someone is calm in a storm. Somewhere somoeone is loving everybody and nurturing and outreaching to women

to share the joys ot UMW. Is that someone YOU? Say YES, and continue to be a WINNER.

Dear Los Angeles Units,

Thank you for your Mission Giving. I am providing here the update of the 5 Stars of Mission Giving from January 1 to August 1, 2012.

For our report through August 1, 2012, we have been going pretty slow this year in reaching our goals on pledges. I remind you to please try to send something once a month to the Los Angeles District.

All of the District Treasurers had their 1st meeting

with Loraine Hartranft, Conference Treasurer. She has given us the result of the Methodist Hospital Pledge. This will be our 5th year of trying to meet our goal of $100,000.00. We still have a balance of $2,550.17 as of May 19, 2012. So we are almost there!

Some facts Loraine shared: All Units for the United Methodist Women, please remember to have your signatories updated on the signature card for your checking account as you have New Officers coming on board each year. Your UMW checking account should have separated Tax ID number from your own Church. We should use the Conference Tax ID for our Checking account. Vicki Cruz can come and assist your Unit in opening up a New Checking Account with your United Methodist Women group if your Unit wishes to change your checking account to United Methodist Federal Credit Union. To reach Vicki Cruz please call her at (800) 245-0433 or (909) 946-4095 ext. 206. Loraine suggests all Units should have their books audited once a year.

We had our Conference Treasurer meeting on July 27, 2012. Loraine told us our Candle of Commitment will be $27.70 per minute. This will start on October 1, 2012. The Conference will have their forms in the September, 2012 issue of the Pacific Waves.

WE WELCOME BISHOP MINERVA CARCAÑO ASSIGNED TO LOS ANGELES EPISCOPAL AREA

Bishop Minerva G. Carcaño has been assigned by the 2012 Western

Jurisdictional Conference to be the Resident Bishop in the Los Angeles Episcopal Area beginning September 1, 2012. The Resident Bishop provides leadership to the California-Pacific Annual Conference, which includes southern California, Hawaii and other islands in the Pacific Ocean.

In 2004, Bishop Minerva Carcaño became the first Hispanic woman to be elected to the episcopacy of The United Methodist Church, the second-largest Protestant denomination in the U.S. Today, she is one of 69 active bishops leading more than twelve million members of her denomination worldwide. She currently serves as Bishop of the Phoenix Episcopal Area, Desert Southwest Conference of the United Methodist Church, and is the

Official Spokesperson for the Council of Bishops on the issue of immigration. Bishop Carcaño is a 1975 graduate of the University of Texas Pan American in Edinburg, Texas, and received a Masters of Theology from Perkins School of Theology of Southern Methodist University in 1979.

Previous appointments have included Emmanuel UMC in Lubbock, Texas, and La Trinidad UMC in San Jose, California, in 1979. She then served positions in Crystal City, Carrizo Springs UMCs, as well as in Hebbronville, McAllen in the early '80s. In 1986 she became the first Hispanic woman to be appointed a United Methodist district superintendent, serving in that capacity until 1992 in West Texas and New Mexico and later in Portland, Oregon.

Bishop Carcaño next spent four years (1992-1996) as the organizing pastor, South Albuquerque Cooperative Ministry. She moved next to a position as director of the Mexican American Program of Hispanic Studies Program at Perkins School of Theology until her call to serve in the Oregon-Idaho Conference.

A native of Edinburg, Texas, Bishop Carcaño spent her early years aspiring to make a difference in the lives of persons who faced poverty and discrimination. Not forgetting her roots and early hopes, her ministry has always involved work with the poor, with farm workers, immigrants, and refugees, even as she encourages congregations to work ecumenically and to be active in community organizing. Of her tireless work, she has said, "The road of ministry has not always been easy, but it has always been an incredible blessing, and it has always been home."

Responsively Yours: What Can You Imagine?

by Harriett Jane Olson

July 1, 2012

The 2012 General Conference has launched United Methodist Women into a new future! The joint proposal from Women’s Division and General Board of Global Ministries received so much support that it was overwhelmingly approved May 1 while restructuring of the rest of the church was passionately debated. Structurally separate from Global Ministries, United Methodist Women will have increased visibility in the church. For example, this fall I will join the meetings of the church’s 12 other general secretaries, and United Methodist Women will participate in the Connectional Table. Bringing to the table the perspectives and the wisdom of the women of the church who are organized for mission will let the denomination’s leaders know a little more about our work.

We hope that changes at the district, conference and jurisdiction levels will spark conversations among United Methodist Women members about how best to organize for our work. The proposals about United Methodist Women that we took to General Conference don’t require any specific change beyond the national level, rather, they allow us more freedom to change ourselves once we’ve re-examined how we’ve been doing things and determine how best to accomplish these tasks in the future. For example, some of our leadership teams may be too big and others may be too small. Further, we know that both our “a day apart” events and our justice advocacy work enhance our spiritual growth. Could we strengthen the formational power of our work if we made that connection directly when describing the work of our leadership teams?

This will not be primarily the work of United Methodist Women’s national staff. Staff will offer leadership, support, experience, etc., but this is work that will be undertaken by United Methodist Women members and leaders, including the new Program Advisory Group. And, it is not work that must be done all at once. So, we have the wonderful opportunity to ask ourselves: What have we learned — and what can we imagine?

Structural configurations alone will not make us the multigenerational, multicultural, multilingual, multiracial, Spirit-filled organization that we want to be. But if we imagine it and build it and work toward it, I believe that God will bless our efforts beyond our wildest imagining. Ours is a Pentecost movement in which prophecies are fulfilled, and the work of the Holy Spirit is affirmed in our sons and our daughters. We are who we are because the Holy Spirit is living in us — bursting forth so that the world may hear us speak the good news in their own languages.

What if we could be a force connecting our congregations to our communities in deeper and more powerful ways so that the good news of Jesus’ love was told and lived more visibly? What if we could find ways to work with our sisters in the Central Conferences that model mutuality and respect for others in the church in contrast to patterns with roots in relationships based on power and wealth? What if we could bring the needs and wisdom of women to coalitions working on disaster response or economic development or peace and security in the church and at the United Nations? What if we could help people making policies on everything from banking to tax structures to learn that if it doesn’t work for women, it doesn’t work? What if we could bring the questions, pain and experiences of the unnamed women in the biblical text and in the world to the forefront of how we hear the Word of God?

What’s that you say? This is our assignment? Wow. United Methodist Women, we need to pray like we’ve never prayed before. This is big.

TOGETHER EVERYONE ACHIEVES MORE

THE NOMINATIONS CORNER

Greetings and blessings to all,

The Los Angeles District of the United Methodist Women is proud to announce the following new members to our slate for 2012-2013. T. Ramon Poole of Crenshaw UMW, Claudia Spears of Holman UMW, and Cheryl Veal of First Inglewood UMW. The complete slate of officers is presented on pages 13 - 14 of this Party Line issue. We will be voting on this slate at our LADUMW Annual Celebration on Saturday, September 22, 2012.

As an executive committee we attended the School of Christian Mission. I participated in the Mission Study on Poverty, led by Rev. Jennifer Gutierrez. It was excellent and we learned a lot about John Wesley and ourselves as United Methodists. This class was taught from three different perspectives, and at our LADUMW Mini School of Mission on August 25, 2012, we will present to our Los Angeles District love ones what we brought back to share. Hope to see you there. The United Methodist Women of the California Pacific Annual Conference has taken a stand against hunger, homelessness, and abuse. Whose side are you on?

Going forward to be the ears, eyes, heart, and mind of JESUS.

Allow people to see without talk that GOD is with you by your actions.

Mary, Mary says, “what is it you see in me, it is the GOD in me.”

May GOD be with you always and forever!

To God be the Glory,

PATRICIA KING Chair, Committee on Nominations

The LADUMW Team presented a successful Social Action Event on June 30th, 2012 at Crenshaw UMC. Bonnie Schumacker, Executive Director of Family Case Partnership gave a presentation on ways to guard ourselves against falls in the home and outside. This information was excellent and needed – not just for seniors, but for all of us. Bryan Gaines of Alzheimer's Association provided current statistics on Alzheimer’s, especially in the African-American community. Deaconess Jeanne Roe Smith, Chaplain/Director of the Wesley Foundation serving UCLA provided an overview of the program at UCLA. We were also blessed to hear the personal stories from three students who participate in the program. We were honored to have Susie James, our Cal-Pac Conference Social Action Coordinator, in attendance for this event.
