“JOHN” by Adam Hamilton A Sunday School Lenten Study The Gospel of John is the most deeply spiritual of the four gospels. It includes some of the loftiest and most loved verses in all the Bible: "And the Word became flesh...," "For God so loved the world...," "You who are without sin cast the first stone...," "I am the resurrection and the life...," "I am the way, and the truth, and the life." The writing is filled with rich images and profound truths, but John notes that his aim in writing the gospel is that his readers will not only believe in Jesus Christ, but that they "may have life in his name." This study begins on February 14 and is open to all adults and youth. The cost for the book is $13. The study will be taught by Pastor Bob in the fellowship hall. Do you do Lent? It is popular these days to pay little attention to Lent. Particularly in this time when everyone is cost conscious, it is hard enter into this somber season of reflection and penitence. Lent is costly. It is costly to us because it forces us to look at places in our lives we would rather not look, to confess our sinfulness openly before God, and to repent – to “turn around” – so that our living might be a fuller expression of God’s love in our lives. But Lent is also costly because there is a cross involved. It is there staring at us in the face. We cannot avoid it or sidestep it. Jesus died for us, for our sin. And there is no forgiveness except through the cross of Christ. At the cross, Christ paid what we owed – and paid it in full. For me, Lent is a time for deep reflection. The forgiveness of my sin is to be found in Lent, but not because God chose to overlook a few little slip-ups I’ve had here and there, but because God took full account of the weight of my sin and nailed it to the cross. The cross is hard to look at. It certainly was for the disciples of Jesus who ran and scattered from its sight. This was not a place of joy or celebration, to say the least. And yet it was the place where my salvation was earned. It was the place, more than anywhere else, that God’s love for me was made manifest. It was there that God said yes to me. I’m sure there will again be many this year who choose to leapfrog the season of Lent altogether. They will be absent when we remember our Lord’s last supper on Maundy Thursday and when we solemnly gather at the foot of the cross on Good Friday. But they will gather with the joyful throng on Easter. But Easter is not the victory. Easter is but the exclamation mark to the victory that was won at the cross. This doesn’t mean that Easter is not joyful, but it is to say that the real joy is found only by those who have first embraced the cross and who have let their old selves die with Christ, so that they might rise with him to a whole new life at Easter. Those who don’t do Lent are like people with cancer who seek to be healthy by taking vitamins, eating right, and getting plenty of exercise but don’t do anything about the cancer within. Thinking themselves fully healthy, they may well be headed for their demise. The cancer is our sin, which Christ took upon himself at the cross and destroyed it for all time. Those who know this have every reason to be filled with joy! Yours in Christ, Pastor Bob THE CALVARY BEACON C ALVARY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 220 W. A Sunday School Lenten Study

The Gospel of John is the most deeply spiritual of the four gospels It includes some of the

loftiest and most loved verses in all the Bible And the Word became flesh For God so

loved the world You who are without sin cast the first stone I am the resurrection

and the life I am the way and the truth and the life The writing is filled with rich images

and profound truths but John notes that his aim in writing the gospel is that his readers will

not only believe in Jesus Christ but that they may have life in his name This study begins

on February 14 and is open to all adults and youth The cost for the book is $13 The study

will be taught by Pastor Bob in the fellowship hall

Do you do Lent It is popular these days

to pay little attention to Lent Particularly in this

time when everyone is cost conscious it is hard

enter into this somber season of reflection and

penitence Lent is costly It is costly to us

because it forces us to look at places in our lives

we would rather not look to confess our

sinfulness openly before God and to repent ndash to

But Lent is also costly because there is a

there that God said yes to me

Irsquom sure there will again be many this

year who choose to leapfrog the season of Lent

altogether They will be absent when we

remember our Lordrsquos last supper on Maundy

foot of the cross on Good Friday But they will

gather with the joyful throng on Easter

Markrsquos Musings We begin the month of February with Transfiguration Sunday where we remember Peter James

Elijah and Moses and a voice booms from heaven ldquoThis is my beloved Son listen to Himrdquo Peter half

cross was before Him Our anthem ldquoHigh upon a Mountainrdquo does a good job capturing the mood of this

Markrsquos Musings We begin the month of February with Transfiguration Sunday where we remember Peter James

and John going up to a mountaintop to pray with Jesus While He is there He becomes transfigured and his

clothes became white like snow ldquoas no fuller on earth can whiten themrdquo Jesus has a conversation with

Elijah and Moses and a voice booms from heaven ldquoThis is my beloved Son listen to Himrdquo Peter half

terrified tries to fill the awkward silence by suggesting they build three houses of worship ldquofor he knew not

what to say for they were very much afraidrdquo Jesus however proceeds down the mountain and tells the

three to keep the story quiet until after the Son of man is raised from the dead At this point they had no

clue what Jesus was telling them They left the mountaintop ldquoamazed and confusedrdquo but Jesus knew the

cross was before Him Our anthem ldquoHigh upon a Mountainrdquo does a good job capturing the mood of this

event While it is ldquojazzyrdquo and you can tap your toe to it it is not necessarily ldquohappyrdquo You can sense a

foreboding darkness up ahead

This brings us into the season of Lent Just as Advent is meant to prepare our hearts for Christmas Lent is a

time of soul searching and spiritual spring cleaning as we prepare for Holy Week Pastor Bob will be

beginning a sermon series on brokenness It begin [Grab your readerrsquos attention with a great quote from the

document or use this space to emphasize a key point To place this text box anywhere on the page just drag it]

s with Jesus being tempted by the devil in the wilderness Our Lord was tested in all points yet did

not sin and glorified His Father We however fail when temptation comes The choir will sing a medley of

two praise hymns Change my heart oh God and Lord Be Glorified

The third Sunday of the month will be a handbell Sunday My thanks for all of your kind words about

our group and I am also very thankful our adult handbell choir consider themselves ldquoyoung at heartrdquo On

the last Sunday of February Pastor Bob will preach on 1 Corinthians 10 In this passage we come to realize

that our sinful hearts are no different than the people of Israel in the Old Testament ndash with the exception

that we have God Himself living inside us We learn that the devil has a very small bag of tricks but they

seem to have ensnared man since the Garden of Eden The good news is that God is faithful to provide a

way out never allowing more than we can bear I guess the bad news is when we fail we canrsquot blame

anyone but ourselves The choir will sing ldquoTis so Sweet to Trust in Jesusrdquo As the song says ldquoTrust and

obey for therersquos no other way to be happy in Jesus than to trust and obeyrdquo

THE BROKEN MADE WHOLE

A Lenten Sermon Series at Calvary

Have you ever experienced brokenness in your life There are few who can claim they have not We

experience broken hearts broken bodies broken relationships and broken spirits And at the core of

our brokenness is that brokenness we experience in our relationship with God During the season of

profound introspection we call Lent I will be preaching not only on brokenness but also how in Christ

we can be made whole I hope you will be with us throughout this series as we move past the pain of

brokenness to the joy of Easter
