Alumni Return to Class

Although generations separate Tim Gust ‘56 and Julie Bushaw ‘07, both have fond memories of their time as Sacred Heart students.

In November, Sacred Heart students in the Career Development class heard from Tim Gust, a 1956 Sacred Heart alum, who has found success in the field of Neuropsychology.

Gust reminisced a little about his time at Sacred Heart relaying tales about a few of the sisters that used to teach here.

Julie Bushaw, a 2007 alum, visited with Sacred Heart students in late January to tell them about her experiences as a missionary and later teaching in Honduras.

Bushaw credits her time at Sacred Heart with providing a solid faith foundation. “I came from Sacred Heart thinking that

everyone went to church on Sunday and that discussing faith was just part of your classes.”

College was a wake-up call for Bushaw, who found herself wondering exactly what to believe. While attending the University of South Dakota she became more and more involved with FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students). “I had never heard of

missionaries being on a college campus before, but I saw how much true joy they had in their lives.” Bushaw credits her involvement with the missionaries as providing an outlet for making the faith her own. “I started to develop my own prayer life. I fell more and more in love with my faith and I realized that God has been with me on this whole journey. I knew I wanted to be a missionary to other college students.”

Bushaw was sent to Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ, where she was a FOCUS missionary for two years.

Julie Bushaw ‘07 discusses her experience teaching in Honduras with students.

Sacred Heart Alumni offer real world insight

“Getting out of your comfort zone and being in a place that is different than how you grew up makes you learn so much about yourself, the world, and how God works.”

- Julie Bushaw ‘07 Continued on page 2

Teaching in Honduras became a possibility after one of her friends discussed the mission trip. “I said, why not give this a try?”

Julie went to Honduras, not knowing Spanish, and knowing little about what the work entailed. “There definitely were some funny and frustrating moments

Bushaw in Honduras with her Prepa (Kindergarten) students.

Greetings,

It always amazes me how fast the school year flies by! We will soon be in our final quarter and with everything going

with my kids with us having to do charades or act things out.” Bushaw’s Kindergarten students knew some basic English as they already had a year of bilingual school under their belts.

Bushaw stated that the experience provided an “awesome recipe for life. Just ten miles around us in any direction were little towns of people who lived every day without electricity or clean water and yet they had a tremendous faith in God.”

Tim Gust, who currently lives in Los Angeles, CA, came back home to Sacred Heart to talk to students about the importance of their career decisions.

When asked by Gust about what careers students were considering they provided a variety of responses: law enforcement, acting, vocal performing, author, medical fields, and architecture.

Gust said, “you have to get into an environment or situation that rewards your particular interest. Without that there is a chance you won’t be successful.” Gust relayed his own personal story of academic success after a struggle in college to succeed.

It was during his doctoral studies at UND that Gust started the first career and counseling program at Sacred Heart. “That was something I really enjoyed — and wished I had it as a senior.”

Gust, although semi-retired, is still doing part time work for the city of Los Angeles.

Gust, the founder of the career and counseling program at Sacred Heart, poses with Patrick Hart, the current school counselor and instructor of the Career Development course.

“Here at Sacred Heart we are fortunate to have had good teachers. A good teacher really does make the difference. It’s what counts. That’s my thank you to Sacred Heart.”

- Tim Gust ‘56

When asked what the most important tool was for success in life Gust responded, “know as much as you can about technology. To be able to use technology well in any field will advance your career options.”

on throughout the school year, it is important to step back and look at all we have accomplished so far.

It honors me to be in a position to help guide the school’s vision and be an integral part in implementing the suggestions from the National Advisory Council, growing our enrollment and moving toward financial security for the future.

We are very blessed by all the generous people who have already contributed to the New Day Capital Campaign. I am proud to announce that we are currently at a little over $4.5 million dollars raised, and we will continue to work diligently to make and exceed our goal of $6 million as we put dreams into action.

We are refining the new President-Principal leadership model. With an organized leadership structure we can utilize our strengths and productivity potential.

We have formed the Grand Cities Catholic Schools Committee to help promote and grow Catholic education city-wide.

Joanne Wilson, our Dean of Academics, along with Patrick Hart, our K-12 Counselor, have been working diligently to complete the first round of Personalized Education Plans (P.E.P.). You can read more about these plans on page six.

Recently, we have had a high number of inquiry calls about the school, which gives us much optimism for our continued growth. Six out of the fifteen families who attended our last open house already registered for next year and more plan to do so!

God Bless,

Carl Adolphson Sacred Heart School President

What: The Spring Fling theme this year is “Denim & Diamonds.” The dinner and auction is our biggest fundraising event for Sacred Heart, hosting over 500 supporters.

When: This year’s event will be held on April 18, 2015 in the Sacred Heart Social Hall and Merth Gymnasium. There will be two dining times, 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

What to wear: This year’s “Denim & Diamonds” theme ensures that this event will have a lively atmosphere. Guests should break out their best country-chic attire. Mix and match jeans with dress jackets and don’t forget bring the glam with some diamond bling!

Who’s playing: Chuck Baskerville will once again be providing the music as you dance the night away!

The plan for the night: Guests are invited to begin the night at 4:30 p.m. by enjoying appetizers and champagne. Items for the evening’s silent auction, open for bid, and our live auction items including dining packages, jewelry, classroom baskets and more, are displayed for perusal. Dinner guests will be ushered into the Merth Gymnasium for an intimate dinner catered by Al’s Grill. A live auction, provided by David Leonardi, will energize the room as we work to support all students at Sacred Heart School.

Beginning in September a dedicated committee of volunteers began to work on the school’s annual Spring Fling Gala.

The annual event is no simple task, netting $145,000 dollars last year. Sacred Heart School has come to appreciate this event as a support to its programs.

Nicole Stocker Kolstoe ‘93, and Jennifer Stocker, two of the parent chairs, feel up to the task. Kolstoe was approached by Michelle Kraft eight years ago to join the Spring Fling Committe. She says, “coming from a family that have attended Sacred Heart including my parents, brothers, myself and now my children I was ready to continue my involvement so that my children could have the great experience that I had.”

Alumni may also recognize a few other familiar names. Carrie Enright Zavoral ‘01 joined the committee last year as a parent chair at the prompting of her husband, Mike Zavoral ‘00. “Since my husband and I both went to school at Sacred Heart and our children will attend, it was important to us to become involved.” Zavoral was volunteering, even before their oldest began school at Sacred Heart. “After taking over the decorating I quickly realized there is much more involved in this great fundraising event - so I took on whatever Nicole asked.”

Jennifer Stocker, also a parent chair, is aiding in media contacts for Spring Fling along with soliciting various vendors.

Kolstoe attributes much of their success to the Spring Fling Committee. “The preparation for this event basically starts after the completion of the current one. With a great committee, spouses, and volunteers to support us we are able to put on the best celebration each and every spring.”

Annual Gala sets $110,000 Goal

“Our main goal is for people to come and support Sacred Heart while they enjoy a night out with family and friends.”

- Nicole Stocker Kolstoe ‘93

It’s “A New Day” at Sacred Heart School

Since 1912, Sacred Heart School has been a home for thousands of students. An anchor in the greater Grand Forks community, Sacred Heart School opens its doors, nurturing and emboldening students as they grow mentally, physically, and spiritually -- forming mind, body, and soul.

Msgr. Mike Foltz, Sacred Heart School’s Superintendent says, “After 100 years of Catholic education in East Grand Forks we are called to be a catalyst for the future. To pay forward the blessings of Catholic education that were bestowed upon us.”

With this desire for growth Sacred Heart School formed the National Advisory Council in 2013. Nearly 100 alumni, parents, and friends returned to Sacred Heart to participate in an assessment process to advance the school. The NAC helped identify specific areas for improvement and then assisted in designing a plan to significantly improve the quality of our curriculum, campus infrastructure, and more importantly the quality of the Sacred Heart experience.

Msgr. Foltz expresses excitement, “the plan calls for a doubling of the school’s high school enrollment in five years. This is based on the premise that great schools will always be in high demand.”

Implementing these fresh ideas the school is already capturing the interest of new families interested in Catholic education. As Sacred Heart continues to grow as an institution it is executing plans to increase the quality and student enrollment.

From the outset, the school knew that reaching these goals would require unprecedented generosity and support from the entire SHS community.

In December of 2013, the silent phase of the campaign began to raise the money necessary to increase enrollment, teacher pay, tuition assistance, and to bring the school to a state of financial stability.

Providing additional support for teachers and staff will be a high priority as the school moves forward with its plan to support its great teachers.

“We have started to build some great momentum,” says school President Carl Adolphson. “We understand that being able to attract and retain the very best teachers is of the utmost importance. It’s really the people not the programs that make a great school.”

The school is pleased to announce it has received a $500,000 gift from the Engelstad Family Foundation. Numerous alumni, like Betty Stocker Engelstad ‘50, have come forward to offer pledges of support to this historic effort. To date, $5.1 million in pledges and gifts of support have come from current and past Sacred Heart families, friends, organizations, and parishioners.

This puts Sacred Heart on track well past the half-way mark and builds strong momentum towards exceeding its overall goal of $6 million dollar goal by 2020.

Msgr. Foltz invites alumni and friends to join us in the effort. “We have a solid plan that will bring us benefits now and down the road. I ask you to join us in this campaign.”

Personalized Education Plans

The Dean of Academics, Joanne Wilson, has already met with parents in grades 6-12 to establish their children’s Personalized Education Plans (P.E.P.). By utilizing these plans students, parents and the school will work closely together to meet the educational goals and future aspirations for each student at SHS.

Staff Salaries

Teachers salaries have increased significantly and a performance incentive plan will be implemented next year.

The Grand Cities Catholic Schools Committee was created to help promote and grow Catholic education city-wide. This group includes members from each of the Grand Forks and East Grand Forks parishes and schools St. Michael’s, Holy Family/St. Mary’s, and Sacred Heart.

In addition to collective marketing campaigns, including mailers and billboards, the committee has established a website, YourCatholicSchools.com, which serves as a gateway for collective advertising and to help families find information.

Sacred Heart School is also working on collaborative projects with the Grand Forks Catholic schools. Our students attend a few of their events throughout the year, and the school invites their students to our high school events, such as concerts, pep rallies, and field trips. During Catholic Schools Week, for example, our First Grade students visited a nursing home along with their Grand Forks Catholic School counterparts.

Embracing Social Media

New Marketing Plan

“We have had a high number of inquiry calls about the school, which gives us much optimism for our continued growth.” - Carl Adolphson, School President

Elementary Art Instructor, Mary Kulas, introduces a project to her students. Photos and videos such as these appear daily on the school’s Facebook, Twitter & Youtube pages.

Gifts in Action

Dean of Academics, Joanne Wilson, works with students.

One of the greatest benefits of using social media has been delivering news and content through tools that our students, alumni, parents, and community members use on a routine basis at home. By sharing what happens at Sacred Heart we are not only telling our SHS story, but allowing parents and friends to share our content with their social connections.

Utilizing the data collected from the GGF Catholic Parent Study has led the marketing committee to create six areas to target for improvement; Employee Relations, Person-to-Person, Catholic Vision in GF, GGF Outreach, Website & Social Media, and Outside media.

In addition, a new website that is mobile compatible was launched at the start of the 2014 school year. The mobile relaunch of the site also included a revamping of the school’s recruiting website, YourChildMatters.org which features upcoming open houses.

Open houses, tours, shadow days, follow-ups and other person-to-person contacts have been a crucial part of the recruiting process.
