MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

I am very pleased to present The College at Brockport Alumni Placement Report that is based on the results from the Class of 2013 Survey and additional data collection conducted by the College’s Office of Research, Analysis and Planning in collaboration with the Offices of Career Services and Alumni Relations.

This important report represents extensive research in collecting and analyzing information on the Class of 2013 for both undergraduate and graduate programs. As I’ve often stated, student success is our highest priority. As such, this report provides valuable information to help us determine whether or not we are successful in preparing our graduates for their professional future and to tailor our services for student success. Based on the data we received from our 2013 alumni, The College at Brockport can be proud of the quality opportunities and services that have been, and continue to be, provided to ensure the success of our recent and future degree recipients.

Of all the 2013 bachelor’s degree respondents, there was a 96 percent placement rate. A “placement” is a graduate who is employed, enrolled in continuing education, or doing both. Placement rates for previous years were consistently between 90 and 95 percent. I also am proud to report that 86 percent of employed bachelor’s degree recipients work in New York state. The remainder of these graduates work in 19 other states, as well as abroad in five foreign countries.

I hope that you find this annual resource on The College at Brockport’s employment and graduate school statistics informative and useful. Any questions or comments regarding the survey and report should be directed to the Office of Research, Analysis and Planning at (585) 395‐5028.

Sincerely,

John R. Halstead, PhD President

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Introduction This report summarizes the post‐graduation accomplishments of the baccalaureate and master’s graduates of the class of 2013 (including graduates from December 2012, January 2013, May 2013, and August 2013).

Before presenting results, our methodology warrants a brief discussion. Broader social trends increasingly affect social science researchers’ data‐gathering efforts like these in both positive and negative ways. While past years of data collection for this report relied mostly on surveys and phone interviewing, success with these methods is hampered given the over‐surveyed climate in which we live and nearly ubiquitous cell phone use (with concomitant caller ID). At the same time, the rise of various social media provides new opportunities for gathering information. Thus, we employed a multi‐mode methodology for collecting data for the Class of 2013. As in previous years, we sent out a self‐administered survey, which was done online through a third party vendor. We also employed a call center to conduct phone interviews with a pool of those graduates who had not responded to the survey. Other sources used included our Student Information System (SIS), the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC), LinkedIn, and we solicited information from chairs of academic departments (see Appendix A for a more complete discussion of our data collection efforts).

We obtained complete or partial data from 369 graduates through the survey process (258 graduates responded to our online questionnaire; a call center got responses from an additional 111 people), for a 17% response rate (369/2,121). Data for an additional 832 graduates were obtained from the other sources mentioned above. We refer to the total of 1201 respondents for whom we have information as our knowledge pool." Or, alternatively, given the multi‐modal strategy we used, we report a "knowledge rate" of 57% (1201/2,121). Throughout this summary and the full college report, figures presented are from our knowledge pool" unless noted otherwise.

The relatively low survey response rate is troubling, but based on a preliminary search of other’s efforts, it may be becoming the norm. For instance, Person Jerold (2011) compared response rates longitudinally at Stanford and found the following: 50% in 2002, 31.9% in 2008, and 26% in 2010 ("Become a Survey Sophisticate," Currents. v37. n5, p20‐23. May ‐ June 2011.) Elsewhere, the University of Colorado at Boulder surveys every 4 years, and their most recent in 2011 yielded 17% response rate of Graduates from 2006‐2008, while the University of Connecticut had a 27% response rate in 2011. In our own case, we note that while the overall response rate is lower than previous years, the demographics of the knowledge data are similar to the group of alumni invited to take the survey. Please see tables 3 and 15 in the level summary pages.

Summary of Baccalaureate Degree Data The survey response rate for baccalaureate degree recipients was 18% (311 responses from 1,722 alumni with valid e‐mail addresses/phone numbers). Additional data resulted in a 59% knowledge rate (1,020/1722).

Our overall placement rate was 96% (N=983/1020) Of these: 483 were employed only (47%) 341 were enrolled only (33%) 159 were employed and enrolled (16%) 37 were seeking employment or not in the job market (4%)

Of those (employed full‐time only) who responded to the employment relatedness survey question, 85% (N=141/165) reported that their employment related to their academic and/or career goals. (survey)

     APPENDIX A: METHODOLOGY

The Survey Pool Students graduating from December 2012 through August of 2013 with a Bachelors Degree, Masters Degree, or Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) were included as the survey pool. (N= 2,145)

The Survey We utilized CampusLab’s Baseline tool, importing the survey pool with their Brockport email addresses. Recipients were sent customized survey invitations with individual survey links. After sending out a reminder through the Baseline mailing, a list of non‐responders was extracted. This list was merged with all alternate email addresses available in our SIS and sent to the Office of Alumni Relations to email a generic survey link. Survey respondents that entered their local campus ID correctly (800#) were then tagged as completed and their responses could be tied back to the pool data.

Because of past issues with using student callers, this year we sent our non‐respondent alumni to an external calling center. There were 994 alumni not responded or whom we had not found in our additional data sources when the call list was generated. Call center agents were given a list with ID numbers and used that to identify a respondent through the generic survey link while administering the instrument over the phone. The center completed 111 surveys. They also identified 145 alumni with invalid phone numbers, 147 alumni refused to take the survey, and 541 alumni with working numbers had not responded.

Additional Data Sources Prompted, in part, by recent standards released by The Na onal Associa on of Colleges and Employers (NACE) that encourage colleges to expand data collec on beyond surveys, we also turned to other, addi onal sources of informa on. Our campus team searched LinkedIn for data on our non‐responders, resul ng in an addi onal 664 alumni for whom we retrieved some informa on, 409 of which were used in the report. We also u lized the Na onal Student Clearinghouse (NSC) data which we obtained informa on for 486 graduates with subsequent enrollment. We also queried our SIS along with campus payroll data for addi onal data points of alumni back here at Brockport in student and/or employee roles. Finally, we then sent out our request for alumni outcomes data to the department chairs, which resulted in data for an addi onal 64 graduates. Some alumni appeared in mul ple sources. Numbers and decision rules are detailed in Methodology Figure 1, in Appendix A.

In their new “First Des na on Survey Standards,” NACE adopts the term, “Knowledge Rate” to capture such expanded efforts. The knowledge rate is defined as “the percent of graduates for which an ins tu on has reasonable and verifiable informa on concerning the graduates’ post‐gradua on career ac vi es” (NACE “Standards and Protocols for the Collec on and Dissemina on of Gradua ng Student Ini al Career Outcome Informa on for Undergraduates” p.6). In the full report, we provide both our original survey response rate and our overall knowledge rate. We also list the source(s) of specific data presented.

In most cases of alumni in mul ple sources, each source provided school or job data. For cases when different sources had data in the same subject area we went with the following order for sources. Brockport data came first, whether it was payroll or student informa on system (SIS) enrollment. The Clearinghouse came next, then LinkedIn. Because data was only sent to chairs for alumni not found in other sources, chair data stands alone.
