Introduction
TexasPrefreshmanEngineeringProgram,orTexPREP,hashitawallwithsteepbudget
cuts. They had to cut staff and the program for the students from600 students to only 300
underservedstudents.Topreventtheprogramfromcollapse,UTSASMMhasagreedtowork
onhelpingTexPREP launchthenewprogram,getAlumniconnectedtous,havethemengage
andhostanewwelcomecentereventwheretheycansignupfortheAlumniprogram,donate
orgetinformationonvolunteeropportunities.
BenefitsofAlumniLaunchProgram
This programwill allow the PREP development offices to solve their digital labor challenges
whilekeepingcostslow.Withtheuseofsocialanddigitaltechnology,weareabletoobtaina

large involvement of alumni audience that can easily be communicated with about events,
donations,andvolunteeropportunities.
IncreasingAlumniEngagement
OurmaingoalistoincreaseTexPREP’sonlineaudiencegrowth.UTSASMMcreatedarangeof
differentsocialmediaplatformsinordertogetbackintouchwithprogramalumni.Platforms
include Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. With this social media strategy, we hope that
TexPREPalumniareabletoreconnectwithotherfellowalumniaswellastheprogram.

OnlineFundraisingCampaigns
ThePREPprogramwillbeconvertingtoanewwebsite.Thiswebsitewillhelpinsimplifyingthe
donation process. Alumni will now be able to fund for small projects such as “Invest in a
Student”or“InvestinaClass”.
These donation categories will explain to alumni how each of their investment will help in
supportingtheTexPREPprogram.
Asampleofhowdonationswillhelpthecause:
● $88KinvestmentsponsorsanentireTexPREPsite.
● $22Kinvestmentsponsorsaclassroomof25students.
● $10KinvestmentprovidesmaterialsandsuppliesforaTexPREPsite.
● $5Kinvestmentsponsors5studentsworkingasagroup
● $1Kinvestment1student’stotalprogramexpenses
● $300investmentcovers1studentstuition.

ThiseventwillhelpinrekindlingtherelationshipandmemoriesbetweentheTexPREPprogram
and their alumni. This is where informational will be held to explain the situation that the
programiscurrentlyinandhowouralumniwillbeabletohelp.

UncertainFutureoftheTexPREPProgram
The Texas Prefreshman Engineering Program (TexPREP), under the UTSA Institute for P-20
Initiatives, is an academically rigorous mathematics-based summer enrichment program
conducted at several college and university campuses across the nation. The 7 week long
program is focused on Middle and High School students who have an interest in science,

technology,engineeringandmathematics inordertohelpthemprepareforhighereducation
andsuccessintheircareerfield.Italsooffersmanystudentsastructuredandsafeplacetobe
duringoutofschooltime.
Thisprogramhashistoricallyreliedongovernmentfunding.Budgetcutshavemadethefuture
oftheprogramreliantonprivatedonorsandvolunteers.Wearecreatinganalumninetworkto
reconnecttothosethathavebenefitedfromtheprogramandencouragethemtosupportthis
programgoingforward.
MissionofthePREPProgram
ThemissionofTexPREPistoincreasethenumberofcompetentlypreparedstudentsfromTexas
whoultimatelypursuepostsecondarystudiesandcareersinSTEMbyinformingthesestudents
with professional opportunities in STEM; reinforcing the academic preparation of these
studentsatthesecondaryschoollevel;andcreatinganenvironmentinwhichtalentedstudents
areencouragedtolearn,explore,achieve,anddiscover.

high school. The rigor of PREP is what helped me succeed in my high
school courses and ultimately graduate salutatorian. My PAs were all
Hispanic. The program really openedmy eyes that even though Iwas a
Hispanic,femaleIcouldsucceedinSTEMcoursesandattendagoodcollege
topursueaSTEMdegree.”
