With a "great" gathering of musicians, a specially recruited SHS Alumni band captured first place in the Adult Band division of Salem Jubilee parade on July 21 . Delighted organizers promised the band will return to perform and march in the 1991 Jubilee . Approximately 80 alumni band members took part, along with former directors Chester Brautigam, Howard "Doc" Pardee and Richard Howenstine. Present director Jeff Jeckavitch lent his assistance, too. Band members came from Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Virginia, Georgia and Washington, D.C. "Grand Old Flag" and "Our Director'' (the old Quaker fight song) as it marched. The band met in the morning for registration, held a rehearsal and enjoyed a luncheon before the 6 p.m. parade . The sponsoring Salem Rotary Club and the Salem City Schools were thanked for their help and cooperation by the organizing committee which included Lu Ann Limestahl Cole ('71 ), Stuart Kendall ('71 ), Betsy Young Johnson ('59), Barbara Butler Greene ('44), Bud Herron ('62), Fred Krauss ('43) and Shelly Kloos Muscko ('81 ). The committee conducted a nationwide mailing to recruit alumni band members. Several families were well represented . They included: The band marched and played with great verve and obvious enjoyment. Oldest was Jeane Giesy ('36) of Flint, Mich., while Cliff Pettey, Heather McNeal and Darrin Ward, all from the 1989 class, were the youngest. ((_ Eleven majorettes and two drum · majors marched. The director was W. William Schuller ('52), Andrew Schuller ('76), now a member of the Marine band in Washington, D.C., Chris Schuller McMann ('77), Heidi Schuller Steele ('78) . Alumni band members who are presently on the instrumental music staff of the Salem City Schools are Lu Ann Limestahl Cole ('71) and James Purrington ('80). They were replaced by vinyl-on-steel bleachers that open and close mechanically. The second phase, completed this past summer, included the installation of telescopic platform chairs, made of hard plastic installed on aluminum and steel decks. Athletic Director Ray Steffen says Salem is the first high school in the country to have these state-of-the- art chairs . In order to defray the cost of the program, the chairs are purchased in a donor's name for $100. An engraved plate with the donor's name, class or "in memory of" is mounted on each chair. With a "great" gathering of musicians, a specially recruited SHS Alumni band captured first place in the Adult Band division of Salem Jubilee parade on July 21 . Delighted organizers promised the band will return to perform and march in the 1991 Jubilee.

Approximately 80 alumni band members took part, along with former directors Chester Brautigam, Howard "Doc" Pardee and Richard Howenstine. Present director Jeff Jeckavitch lent his assistance, too. Band members came from Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Virginia, Georgia and Washington, D.C.

I Reunion classes give generous $11 ,390 I An encouraging outpouring of

contributions from SHS graduates on all levels came through the Alumni office since publication of the spring newsletter.

A total of $16, 119 was received, $11 ,390 of which came from nine classes holding reunions . All of it was earmarked for the Scholarship Committee.

The 50-year Class of 1940 led the list with a $3,000 gift , the largest class gift ever received , while the Class of 1935 gave $2,613 and the Class of 1930 $2,050. The younger classes were led by the 1955 group which gave $1 ,087.
