The firm was founded by Richard J. Neutra in 1926. It celebrates 93 years of service in 2019. Having been born the son of one of the 20th Century’s recognized pioneers in architecture, Dion apprenticed in simple drafting and became interested in the systematic approach of his father’s office from the time he was 11 years old. Since then his interest in the field approached nine decades of exposure, development and growth. At John Marshall High School, Dion was on the Northern League Champion Gymnastics team and was a contender at the City Gymnastics finals. He was also a member of the Citizenship Honorary Society (CHS), the organization that recognizes students for outstanding citizenship and service to the school. After having served during WW II in the US Navy, Dion studied for his junior year at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and then graduated cum laude from USC in 1950. Due to the extensive training and experience he had received up to that point, he was eligible the same year and passed in one sitting, the rigorous 4-day state board examination to be granted his California license at the age of 24. He also became a member of the AIA in that same year, one of its youngest corporate members. The decade of the 50s saw a continued close association both with his father in his residential practice, as well as with the partnership of Neutra and Alexander. During this time, he was exposed to virtually every project being developed in both practices, also acting as project architect on many. There were a number of award-winning residences, commercial, medical, civic, recreational, institutional, and planning projects during those years. He was especially active in such projects as the U.S. Embassy in Karachi, Pakistan, the Gettysburg Memorial, libraries for Adelphi and Simpson Universities, the Science building at St. John’s College. On his own, after his father’s passing, he designed the main library at Huntington Beach, a Graduate Center at the Claremont Colleges, and several spectacular residences. In all, the firm worked on 11 islands throughout the world. After a brief period of practice for his own account in the early 60s, Dion rejoined his father’s firm as vice-president and partner. In that time, he reconstructed the VDL Research House after the fire which destroyed it in 1963. He became principal of the newly re-named firm, Richard and Dion Neutra, Architects and Associates, in 1965, and has continued to lead it as President since the senior Neutra’s death in 1970. Over the years, Dion has authored numerous articles, over a dozen books, and has been the subject of articles, TV interviews and has curated several exhibitions of the firm‘s work. He is an experienced lecturer, having spoken at clubs, universities, gatherings over several continents. In 1995 he was invited as Keynoter for a major exhibition of Viennese modernists at the Kunsthalle, Vienna. During that time, he was featured on local TV speaking the local German. In October 1998 he spoke as special invited guest at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, the site of one of the firm‘s spectacular houses on a river front property. In November 2000, he spoke at the University of Minnesota at their invited lecturers’ program. In 1999 and 2000 Neutra works were featured in major exhibitions at the Whitney in NYC and MOCA in Los Angeles and other cities among others. ......continued on page 5 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award Winner is Dion Neutra Class of Winter 1944 Dion Neutra on his 90th Birthday

President’s Message...

Board Meetings & Important Dates In 2019

All Board meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 6:30pm in the staff cafeteria

unless otherwise noted.

This year began with our annual General Meeting on January 8. At that meeting we said good-bye to one of our longest-serving Board members, and we said hello to a brand-new one! Mary Gilks Geary S’40 stepped down from the board this year after 28 years of helping to guide the alumni association. At the age of 96 ½ she is going to take it easy from now on. We will miss her sweet smile and her positive outlook. Our newest board member is Louis Quan S’67. Louie has been an active alumni association member who attended many of our events. We welcome him to the board as we make our plans for projects and events throughout the year. In 2019 we celebrate the 88th anniversary of the opening of our school and the 40th anniversary of the founding of the alumni association. We encourage all alumni to help us help the school by becoming members of the alumni association. Your dues and donations supply the funding needed to uphold the tradition of excellence for which Marshall is nationally known. Your sponsorship of our projects allows us to give back to the school that gave us so much. We look forward to seeing you at our Marshall events.

So Proud to be a Barrister!Joanna ErdosPresident

In May 2003, Dion was keynoter at a modernist convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico, at which the work of his father of the early 40s was hailed as the start of modernism on the island. In February 2006, he was invited lecturer in Dallas, Houston and Brownsville, TX; in December, he was the invited feature speaker at the French Society of Architects in Paris. Over the past few years there has been increasing local appreciation for the work of this practice. See examples of articles in Vogue, NY and LA Times, Detour, Bazaar, A&U [Japanese], Architecture, AIArchitecture, Dwell, New Yorker, Forbes. A host of new owners have taken over from the original clients for many of the projects which were built in 20 states and on 4 continents. In October 1998 a major exhibition of the works of the firm opened at UCLA. In 2009, a massive exhibition of Neutra drawings was at the LA Central Library. In 2010, a major museum exhibition of ‘Neutra in Europe’ opened in May at the MARTa in Herford, to which Dion and his wife were invited. Dion’s more recent focus has been on the preservation and conservation of the remaining stock of Neutra Projects as they adapt to new owners and uses over time. He continues his interest in preservation in general, research, speaking and writing with interest in computer applications that could help to implement some of the firm’s philosophy of ‘Biorealism’ and ‘Nature-near Design’. He continues the design work of the firm with select projects alone and in collaboration. In late 2014, he established the NEUTRA INSTITUTE MUSEUM OF SILVER LAKE. Housed in the front part of the Neutra Office Building, a City Monument, this has, by early ’19, hosted close to 100 art shows, and two theater productions, along with many specialty events. The Dion Neutra/Reunion House is the only example of a firm designed project on which both father and son worked, but not concurrently. The house was envisioned in 1950, as a hypothetical “grandparent’s house” where family reunions would be held. The senior Neutras lived in it for two years starting in 1964. From 1966 on, it has been the home of Dion and his family. The John Marshall High Alumni Association is pleased to include Dion Neutra in a very special group of Distinguished Alumni. Dion will be the guest of honor at a luncheon to be held on Friday, June 7 at Les Freres Taix Restaurant. After the luncheon, he will speak at the Class of 2019 Commencement Ceremony at the Greek Theatre.

Academic Decathlon Team Qualifies For State Competition!

It is often that I have thought about contacting you about some art exhibit or such in which I was involved. Never until now did I do that because there is an important event happening in my artistic life. My following email will indicate that I am having a 50-year Retrospective of my work and thought you might be interested to learn about this Marshall graduate. I am a Summer 1954 graduate of John Marshall. From there I spent two years at LACC and then to UCLA where I earned a Master of Art degree in Pictorial Arts. My first

wife and I produced three terrific sons, all of whom are doing extremely well in their own careers. I taught junior high, then at James Monroe High School in the San Fernando Valley and then at LACC where I taught studio art and art history until my retirement in 2015. During that time I was rather successful in my art career having exhibited my work in Spain, Peru, the Bahamas, Mexico and seven countries in Africa. In the USA I showed at the Washington D.C. Museum of Latin American Art, the Museum of New Mexico, the Museum of Man in San Diego, the Phoenix Art Museum and in Los Angeles at the Museum of Latin American Art, the Southwest Museum, the Armand Hammer Museum and the Autry Museum of Western Art. I was fortunate to receive a Fulbright Fellowship for a year’s study in Peru and an Arts America Grant to give a 5-city lecture series in the country of Colombia. My work is published in the volume on Contemporary Chicana and Chicano Artists by the Bi-Lingual Press, Arizona State University I have given lecture on art to the Getty Institute of Conservation, the Native American Institute, the Docents of the LA County Museum of Art, the Los Angeles Conservancy and the Museum of Latin American in Long Beach. I created a large mural for the LA Metro System Headquarters in El Monte and was chosen to create a “Neighborhood Poster” for the same Metro System As I have done for the past 20 years. I am making plans with my wife to lead an art travel tour to a foreign Spanish-speaking country.Thought you might be interested.Raoul De la Sota (DeSota in 1954)

My name is Henry Lipson and I am wondering if there are enough able bodied members to have a 70th year reunion. I was editor of the Blue Tide in 1949 and now live in Sherman Oaks CA. I am still in reasonably good shape physically but mentally have a few problems like forgetting appointments or remembering to feed the dog. I am willing to volunteer to serve on a committee to plan the event if there is enough interest. I would prefer to have the event in the SF Valley or West Los Angeles. After graduation I went to pharmacy school, then spent 2 years in the army and then owned a pharmacy in Encino for 40 years. I have been retired since 1997. I have 4 children and 5 grandchildren, divorced in 1974 and remarried in 1976. My 2nd wife and I traveled the world for 40 years and enjoyed almost every minute of it. Looking forward to hearing from anyone out there. ( anyone from the Class of 1949 who is interested, please contact the editor at [email protected].)Henry Lipson S’1949
