I’m not fussed about nostalgia
but there’s a timelessness to
this practical jacket.
Behind the waxed cotton
outer is a breathable membrane
that has been waterproof over
several thousand miles, and
there’s CE level 1 armour in
shoulders and elbows. Comfort
is a large appeal of this jacket.
It’s great on a laid-back bike,
the cuff poppers keeping
draughts out, and the sleeves
are a good length.
It’s even more comfortable off
the bike. If I’m walking to the
local shop, or indeed the local,
I’m more likely to grab the
Sixty-Six than a leather jacket.
It also has plenty of pockets.
Inside there are three: two
wallet types and a phone-sized
one. There are four external
pockets, but gents wouldn’t
want to put much in the larger
chest pockets, as you’d look
like you had bad moobs.
The Sixty-Six isn’t
particularly retro in style so it
looks fine with most non-
sportsbikes. But its appeal is
comfort and flexibility. This is a
bike jacket that works really
well when you’re riding – and is
even better off the bike.

This is the ringer, as it’s not a
waxed cotton jacket. It’s here
because it’s cut to look like one,
and designed to be functional
and stylish on and off the bike.
If you want a waxed cotton
jacket because you like the
smell and the feel, stop reading
here. But if you like the look and
want a really good motorcycle
jacket, this is worth exploring.
It’s easy to put on and take off
and it’s soft and comfy, with
enough size adjustment to
ensure a good fit for a wide
variety of riders, and not too
heavy or stiff. There’s also a
removable waistcoat, which
provides extra warmth, plus
loads of pockets inside and out.
On the road, it’s really comfy.
With the waistcoat removed
there’s still enough padding to
keep you feeling cocooned,
while the lack of stiffness gives
a good amount of movement.
Some rain got through when
we rode in an all-day deluge.
The jacket soaked up a lot of
water, so it became heavy and
took ages to dry.
You’ll have to provide your
own back protector, but given
how well this jacket generally
works, it’s very good value.

Long armsAlthough the jacket is on the short side, the sleeves are a good length for on-bike use.
StylingHigh collar, breast pocket and belted waist all echo theclassic Belstaff/Barbour look.
