A glow stickis a single-use translucent plastic tubecontaining isolated substances which when combinedmake light through a chemical reaction-induced chemiluminescencewhich does not require an
electrical power source.

Glow sticks give off light when two solutions are allowedto mix.
The sticks consist of a small fragile container within aflexible outer container.
Each container holds one of the two solutions. When theouter container is bent, it breaks the inner container, releasing the first solution into the second solution.
After breaking, the tube is shaken to mix the twocomponents.
Usually to activate this reaction, you simply bend theglow stick.

It is a common belief that glow sticks may beplaced in a freezer to slow the chemicalreaction, allowing the same sticks to be keptfor two or three night's activity.
In reverse, microwaving or running hot waterover them speeds upthe photon release andmakes them brighter, but also diminishes thelife of the glow stick.
This however usually depends on the specific
composition of chemicals in the particular glowstick at hand.

USES
Glow-sticks are waterproof, do not use batteries, generate negligible heat, are inexpensive, and arereasonably disposable.
They can tolerate high pressures, such as those found
underwater. They are used as light sources and light markersby military forces, campers, and recreationaldivers doing night diving.
Glow sticks are considered the only kind of light source
that is ideal safe for use immediately followingan earthquake, hurricane, tornado, or other catastrophicemergency situationdue to the fact that they do not useany kind of electricity to work.

Dangers
Glow sticks contain hydrogen peroxide, and phenolis produced as a by-product.
It is advisable to keep the mixture awayfrom skinand to prevent accidental
ingestion if the glow stick case splits orbreaks.
If spilled on skin the chemicals could causeslight skin irritation, swelling, or, inextreme circumstances, vomitingand
nausea. The sensitizers used arepolynucleararomatic hydrocarbons, a class ofcompounds known for their carcinogenity.
