1. Technology roadmaps: 2009 Roadmap Identified the need

2. Research priorities: 2009 Proposed need for Research

3. Work Shop: Technical Committee Organized a workshop in Taipei Taiwan in April 2009

4. Technology deployment projects: Two Projects started in 2Q 2009

5. Since then 4 additional projects have started; 3 white papers have been generated; we are now publishing a proactive quarterly environmental newsletter.

Great momentum in the iNEMI Environmental program

iNEMI Alternative Energy Direction

• Provide Leadership and Drive of the iNEMI energy strategy that:- Expands beyond road mapping of energy related topics into

collaborative projects that deliver solutions- Develops and executes a specific green energy agenda that leverages

off iNEMI expertise and membership.- Brings needed leadership firms to the table to drive greater impact for

the industry. • Scope:

- Focused on electronics hardware technology for green energy applications.

- Participation by all critical nodes of supply chain is required for success.

Alternative Energy Workshop Objectives

• Identify the most likely areas where the electronics industry can have the greatest impact on closing alternative energy technology & cost gaps, eg. in “Balance of Plant” BOP or Balance of System BOS (like Inverters)

• Within those selected areas, identify technology needs best solved by consortium activities (thru industry collaboration):

– Reliability assessments

– Supply chain alignment

– Standards development• Work in sub groups to further define the problems & opportunities:

– Description of current situation or challenge / issue in BOP/BOS.

– Definition of problem statement.

– Details known on root cause and/or work required to get to root cause.

– Desirable solutions/deliverables targeted thru collaborative efforts.

Where iNEMI Can Bring Value

• Predominantly on “BOP” including (not limited to)– Control electronics– Inverters– Systems integration/interfaces

• Collaborative opportunities that leverage our proven methodologies and strengths in areas such as– Reliability requirements; Test methodologies; Standards– Radical Efficiency & Cost Improvements

• Driving supply chain alignment, specs, standards • Help build bridges between energy segments & electronics

segment

A Summary of Why Companies Participate in iNEMI

15

• Collaborate with their key customers (at multiple levels).• Collaborate with their key suppliers.• Leverage their resources – Typically in the 8X to 20x range on key

projects and thrusts:– Reduce resource demands and $ investments for your company– Ensure technology readiness when your business requires it– Reduce risk of technology introduction (e.g.)

– Reliability – Hard to measure the negative impact of poor reliability, but can be disastrous

– Source of supply – Also hard to apply general cost impact numbers to being late to market – Can also be huge.

• Help influence and create industry-standard solutions that lead to competitive products.

• Understand & exploit new business opportunities.• Well aligned collaborative opportunities in advancing solder materials

technologies, the environment, and miniaturization.

The Alternative Energy WorkshopA Call to Action

• Objectives for these two days:– Create a working understanding and sharing of the key gaps that

are faced by the AE electronics manufacturing industry.– ID those where collaboration would be most beneficial.– Work in sub groups to further define the problems and

opportunities:• Description of current situation.• Clear problem statement.• Desirable solutions/deliverables targeted.

Optimal Success from this workshop will be at least 3 collaboration initiatives, each with at least 5 supporting companies/organizations.
