ABOUT For the 7th year in a row, children from South County Dublin will explore greatly diverse arts and cultures during the Alternative Entertainments Children’s Art Festival. From 11th to 15th of June, artists, musicians, dancers & storytellers from all over Ireland and the world will share their art with children aged 3 to 12 in a week of exciting activities. From making fibre art to creating podcasts, from learning about Nepalese music to writing their own songs, there will be more than 180 workshops given to over 9000 children in 18 participating schools, community centres, arts centres & libraries. Hip Hop, Rap & African Drumming will merge in one school, while a Cuban ensemble will be heard from the windows of another. As younger children watch enthralled by a puppet show, 8 to 12 year olds will be creating their own interactive art.

There will be performances by Mariachi San Patricio, American folk musician Rick Epping, poet Eileen Casey, trad musicians Sean Óg McKenna, Martin Nolan & Mairéad O’Donnell, dancer Phillipa Donnelan and, lest we forget, performances by the children themselves who will show off the skills they have learned during the week. A major feature of past festivals has been the art of film and this year we are delighted to welcome Grainne Humphrys of the Jameson Dublin Film Festival who will curate the 2012 film series, which will feature Irish short films and engage the children in discussions on thechosen films. Films will be shown in RUA RED, South Dublin Arts Centre where there will also be a week of scheduled creative events - puppet shows by Púca Puppets, visual art, dance and music workshops.

The AltEnts Children’s Art Festival events have been carefully selected in an effort to hone both intercultural and creative awareness, and to help in the critical development of artistic abilities from an early age. Additionally, the programme places participants in the special dual role of both performer and audience - a position that allows the children to explore their power to evaluate as well as create. It all promises to be a highly creative, fully interactive and a thoroughly enjoyable week for the children and their teachers too!

The festival is organised by Alternative Entertainments Ltd. with support from The Arts Council of Ireland, South Dublin County Council and donations from participating schools.
